In honor of a new law
You're not driving and talking on your cell phone without a hands-free device, are you? The law requiring drivers age 18 and over to use a hands-free device while driving went into effect today. (Those under 18 aren't allowed to talk on cell phones will driving at all.) Reporter John Cox found you can spend about $20 or much more for devices that comply with the law. Have you found any good deals? Share them here. — Christine Peterson 17 comments from 9 users

Sorry, OldBlue. I'm curious about whether anyone has found some great deals ... not necessarily comments on the law itself! posted by

If you go for a wired headset, you'll definately find great deals. It's only if you insist on having a bluetooth "earring" that you'll have to pay money. A basic wired headset will run you around $20 and some phones still include earbuds with the phone (although that is rarer these days). As a plus, once you get a universal plug headset, the most you'll need to buy for a new phone is a universal to proprietary adapter if your new phone uses a proprietary jack. You can also use the same headset on your cordless house phone if it also has a universal headset jack, so two uses for the price of one for those who still have a land line. And for those worried about bluetooth causing brain cancer, well you won't have that worry with a wired headset. It's a win-win all around... just keep the cord tucked away so it doesn't snag on something and unplug mid-conversation. posted by

I got the buds with wires and an off and on switch with the phone..can't figure out how anyone could use it to talk though. The speakerphone won't work while driving with my phone ...you have to be on the phone with your caller or callee to switch it on. I'm leaning toward the visor one. Or just not using the phone at all when I'm driving. posted by

My son called me on his a week or so ago and I couldn't understand half what he was saying. A friend called on his a while back..same thing. Cousin called on hers and it didn't break up but sounded hollow. It just isn't as clear as holding it to your mouth. posted by

I have the factory bluetooth in my car that decided today of all days, not to work. It seems I owe the city $60 already. Guess I need a back up ear piece as well. posted by

Gube, don't believe that $20 stuff. The first offense is $76, and repeat offenders pay $190. No points are added, but the conviction will appear on your driving record. posted by

JBS..where did you get that.? The DMV website says 20 bucks first offense, 50 for 2nd. If you're involved in an accident while using your cell phone in hand the fine can be greater and you can be liable for heavy fines. Also Nextel type and CB's are exempt with class A and Class B licenses intil 2010 and then truckers will be held to the same law. posted by

Then my $60 was way off, closer to $500 and my insurance would sky rocket. A trip to the dealership for a bluetooth "check up" needs to be set up. Chances are good it's only an operator problem. posted by

Nancy, it says so on the front page of today's Fresno Bee. That $20/50 stuff doesn't sound like much of a deterrent; those whose lives revolve around showing everyone how cool they are because they're talking on a cell phone won't be swayed too much by the possibility of a fine that small. The $76/190 fine sounds a lot more fitting. Look down near the bottom of the article. posted by

The DMV is calling the 20/50 fine a "base fine." See it here. http://www.dmv.ca.gov/cellu... I read your article JBS...there's going to be no end of confusion over this. posted by

eBay and Amazon both have fantastic deals. I tend to loose mine quite a bit so spending a hundred bucks for my type each time isn't for me. Buying from eBay and Amazon, I've never paid over $15.00 for each one.
