Escaping reality with Halloween?
The average person plans to spend $66.54 on Halloween this year, up a tad from $64.82 from a year ago, according to the National Retail Federation. And more people plan to celebrate — 64.5 percent of the population compared to 58.7 last year. Folks at NRF are suggesting that maybe that's because people just need a break from all the doom and gloom news about the economy. So where are the cheap deals for Halloween costumes, candy or spooky decorations? — Christine Peterson 9 comments from 7 users

I got a catalog in today's mail from Party Center located on Stockdale & California. All kinds of Halloween costumes and junk. Not as many trick-or-treaters in my 'hood as there used to be. That means I get the candy I like, as I'll be eating most of it. Most of the kids go to carnivals or parties. I don't mind putting out effort for kids; it's their evening to have fun in silly costumes. (Adults, on the other hand, don't need an occassion to get drunk.) My idea of a good time is getting in my pj's and watching a good scary monster movie. posted by

Zombie (or vampire) costume. Wear existing clothes (older stuff, maybe with holes in it) = $0.00 Put on existing zombie makeup and fake blood = $0.00 Beer and Jameson = $66.54
Yep, I guess that's about right. posted by

If you know how to sew there is an abundance of costume materials at the Goodwill stores. Most have Wedding dresses, brides maid dresses, and sparkly Beauty pageant type dresses for sale. If you can sew you could rip the seams and stitch up some dazzling costumes for your daughters. They could go T or T as fairy princesses. There is 1 month left to get this done. posted by

One of my daughters once went trick-or-treating as a dead bride. Real wedding gown, white makeup, dead bunch of roses. Not from Goodwill but similar store. I plan to spend less than $10, by the way. posted by

When my oldest was a wee tyke, and had one of those 'bowl" haircuts,I put an extra large brown t-shirt on him,a macrame belt, some sandals~ a Franciscan monk.We took boxes, some old venting tube for a clothes dryer, some silver spray paint,a lot of aluminum foil and,a robot was born. I always dress up to answer my door~ mostly kids I know now though. Kelsey was the hardest~ because incorporating a wheel chair into a costume was tough! He was a race driver one year, boxes again,a fisherman on a river bank( boxes on the side to look like grass,a tree on the back, bamboo pole with a bob, attached to arm rest) and my favorite~ zero the dog from Tim Burton's Nightmare before Christmas.Sheets and starch pulled that one off. Imagination is the best thing about Halloween~ costumes from a box are the bane of the holiday.

My four-year-old son has been dressing up in costumes (all year) since he was two. He has dressed up as: Darth Vader, a Darth Vader goon in white, Indiana Jones, a robot, Batman, a cop, and a pirate. He dresses up in some sort of costume nearly every day. We buy him costumes for his birthday and Christmas. There's no telling what he's gonna wanna go as for Halloween this year. The baby is a big, round, pink, blond ball of chub. I don't know what we're gonna dress her up as this year. What's fat and pink? A pig, I guess, but I'm holding out for something cuter. My mom says the best place to find good Halloween decoration deals is at the $ store. We'll probably go there first. posted by

I once saw a pig costume that was made from a pastel pink long sleeve sweatshirt with two rows of baby bottle nipples glued down the front. Pink sweatpants with a tail. I think the ears and the nose were store bought. It was hilarious. posted by

I'm Alley-Oop at Halloween, maybe the skinniest cave man anyone ever saw. When I taught school I alternated between Mr. Rogers and Abe Lincoln. And if I REALLY wanted to scare people, I'd do my Jesse Helms costume: Dark suit, red neck tie and American Flag lapel pin. posted by

LOL, HM! I cannot imagine you in a caveman costume. It's incongruous, but still cool. : ) I haven't really dressed up for Halloween since I was a kid. I went as a Doors groupie one year when I was 19, but that was about it. I guess I'm a fuddy duddy.
