Anger Over US Withdrawal from Kyoto Protocol: "The evidence of this worsening crisis continues to mount," said Al Gore yesterday, accusing Bush of showing the world "a stunning display of moral cowardice."

"Kyoto's ability to survive the near-fatal attacks of the Bush administration is testimony to the urgency of the climate problem." Worldwatch Institute

"As the world celebrates the global warming pact's debut, Bush continues to pander to the energy industry." Laurie David, Natural Resources Defense Council

The Future of the Kyoto Protocol: The Kyoto Protocol became legally effective after obtaining support from countries representing 55% of worldwide greenhouse gas pollution. The agreement expires in 2012. It's likely that a new agreement will be proposed in 2012. However, if the US doesn't sign on, and instead chooses to pander to profits and business lobbyists, then the agreement will likely fall apart. China and other large nations would probably follow suit. http://usliberals.about.com...

Even I watched the last quarter of the game and I'm not a football fan.  I just wanted to see how boys playing in 5 degree weather managed it.  By then, with a tie, I got stuck seeing how it would all pan out.  Heee..what a kick.  It was a beauty.

I rarely watch 60 minutes any more.  It used to be the show to watch but when they added one another night, and other networks put on similar shows, I got tired of all of it and now get my legal stuff from all the L&O's.  I'm about ready to take the bar exam.

I thought you were tired of the bar environment. I guess this is another example of you examining your position. Don't go flip flopping on us again Nancy. <grin>

Oddly, Scott Pelley didn't mention the recent underwater volcanic activity under the Antarctic. One volcano was discovered off the northern tip in 2004- where previously they didn't ever expect to find volcanic activity. The indication is natural cause is having an effect, and we don't know how many more of the oceanic volcanos are active in the region. Missing data = bad data.

Nancy-I just wanted to see how boys playing in 5 degree weather managed it.

Did you see the girls in the stands in their bikinis? Can you imagine?

posted by NancyII on Jan 21, 2008 at 09:19 AM

Baylee..I didn't see that.  If I had I'd have had to turn my electric lap throw up a notch.  And no..I can't imagine bikinis in that weather...lol.   Brrrrrr.  Seeing the guys play in short sleeves was enough but at least they were running around.

Tk..I passed THAT "bar" exam years ago.  Got my doctorate in it, got the T-shirt, and burned the sucker.  LOL.

What some people will do to support their team huh( or at least to be seen on tv in their bikinis)

Kat,

No doubt Volcano's have an effect on the environment. But it has nothing to do with the heat emitted from the volcano. The world is riddled with hot spots. Geysers that erupt non stop and have a very minimal effect even on their immediate location. In addition these are effect mankind has no control over.

The ash and gases emitted during a huge eruption cause significant problems. But they are short term.

If you or anyone would guarantee that the green house gases produced by mankind would have the duration of a volcano and then go away. I am sure we could agree to abandon Kyoto.

But that's not the case. The energy czars wish to garner every nickel they can from fossil fuels. They will pump the earth dry until it's cities fall into the abyss cause by their mining.

The loss of krill, the staple diet for penguins in the CBS show, could be accounted for by oceanic volcanic activity, as well other aspects of global warming.

18,000 years ago, Canada and large swaths of the northern United State didn't exist. It was under hundreds of feet of ice. For 18,000 years the North American glaciers have receded to the boundaries we now observe. What is left is but a small segment of what was there 18,000 years ago. There is no argument the majority of the North American land mass appeared due to natural processes.

That delivers us to today. I agree with you the energy titans have other interests that must be taken into account, but the science of natural processes is far better established than man made causes.

Please don't excoriate me, I personally believe we should return to the horse and buggy and eschew modern technology. I say that while along with everyone else, I have to use modern technology to survive.

One last point, anything we can do sounds wise to me. But, the inevitable result will be the same concerning rise in oceans and the diminishing of coastal and inland land mass due flooding. That is coming no matter what if the prevailing trend of the last 18,000 years continues unabated.

In the end, the same consequence.

If you sneeze. You have changed the world forever.

Everything will come to an end. It is the timing of that end that can be effected.
