Why McCain? Why Not?
Pat Cadell, Democrat political analyst and contributor for Fox (a guy I find unusually reasonable for a Democrat BTW) News, made an inter sting point last night. He wondered aloud why John McCain is treated so badly by the rank & file Republicans? His war hero status and obvious "media darling" and McCain-Fiengold type boo boo's notwithstanding, why do those of his party eschew his success? Especially when he (according to Pat) would be the only Republican going right now who could flat out destroy HRC in a general election by grabbing that vast middle ground! I have wondered this myself. I guess it still comes down to the old "lesser of evils" ethic doesn't it? 47 comments from 13 users

John McCain is opposed to torture. This clearly explains why the "rank and file" of the Republican Party treat him so badly.

McCain has kissed too much Bush hind-end to be President. He's OK with keeping troops in Iraq another 100 years, and I don't believe he really *IS* against torture. Besides, he's too old. . He would be a terrible President. posted by

McCain is treated badly because he's one of the few Republicans at the top with actual military service on his resume. The pundits and talk radio clowns who anoint the candidates don't like being reminded they all dodged the draft or received deferments or like Bush skipped on his commitment. posted by

Yeah, it's tough when your only media exposure is your concession speech. Edwards was #1 on my candidate's policy quiz here several times, but he's kind of annoying in a Southern monotone sort of way. Speaking of no media attention, the last time there was a Rudy sighting on our TV, they showed him giving a speech in Florida. Just showed him, though, without sound while the analysts talked about him. I don't think the strategy of tanking the first half dozen primaries will be the model of any future candidates. posted by

Montfred, from my perspective there are some key factors that have led to John Edwards disappointing results in New Hampshire, Nevada, and potentially in South Carolina. The media treats our elections of government officials simply as horse races. Who's ahead? Who's winning? Who's losing? Why? There is a recent article on Salon.com that talks about polls and the horse race mentality of the day. Poll questions tell you more about the actual poll and who is running it than poll results actually measure today. Tracking who is ahead on any day from poll responses simply is the most convenient and cost effective method for a national media, short on actual reporters, to cover this type of event. Issues become annoying filler which might have complex answers that take longer than is commercially allowed to articulate and will leave no lasting impression on the hand that holds the remote control. The American voter is the captive of his own attention deficit disorder. Edwards has also been the victim of a group mentality of pundits proclaiming he had to win Iowa to remain a viable candidate. His move to run a publicly financed campaign was written and examined by the group mentality of privileged pundits as a capitulation that his campaign had no money, and no chance. The message never mattered, only the availability of the medium. After New Hampshire he has become almost invisible to the national media. Fred (I never really intended to actually run for President) Thompson got more press than John Edwards these past two weeks. The resultant lack of media focus on his campaign, which as Robb has so eloquently pointed out, features the few same sound bites over and over again to a vast public left wondering if this is all there is. It is not, however the public will not seek out the johnedwards.com website and read the 80 pages of position papers, written on the big issues long before his opponents borrowed many of his ideas and turf. In a plutocracy money is all that matters. I don't think most people have come to that realization just yet, which is why we have pretend elections that never satisfactorily resolve any major issue. For instance, Woody Guthrie was singing about migrant farm workers as a social and political issue 70 years ago. Nothing has changed since the Great Depression on this very hot and politically charged issue for 70 years. And people think that elections matter? Elections will never matter if people continue to vote only for the people that money allows you to vote for. Vote against any candidate big media has riveted their attention on. posted by

My biggest problem with McCain is he doesn't seem to know what his position is on any given topic until someone hands it to him. But he sure seems to be the candidate folks want to have a beer with, so staying in Iraq another hundred years won't be a problem for his campaign. posted by

McCain is the best candidate out of all candidates, Democrats and Republicans. He is the least likely to allow out of control spending to continue unchecked, he is the best for our security. He is the most likely to look out for everybody's interests (whether Democrat of Republican), and the greatest uniter. He reaches out to the other side without compromising his own core principles. posted by

Agree with Oenghus on this one. We should question ALL candidates regardless I do get tired of the trashing of McCain for what he did or didn't do as POW. Fact is he could have had it a lot easier (and shorter) had he used his Dad. He did not. He went through hell. Still OK to question his policies, etc. Why not?
