DENVER (AP) - Democrat John Edwards is exiting the presidential race Wednesday, ending a scrappy underdog bid in which he steered his rivals toward progressive ideals while grappling with family hardship that roused voter's sympathies but never diverted his campaign, The Associated Press has learned.

The two-time White House candidate notified a close circle of senior advisers that he planned to make the announcement at a 1 p.m. EST event in New Orleans that had been billed as a speech on poverty, according to two of his advisers. The decision came after Edwards lost the four states to hold nominating contests so far to rivals who stole the spotlight from the beginning—Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama.

Makes you wonder what kind of deals have been made doesn't it?

I remember him a few days ago stating unequivocally he will not drop out -- going all the way (to convention)

Hmmmmmm.......................

There was a reported meeting with the Clinton campaign last week after a debate, and the rumors that Edwards would get the AG post in an Obama campaign.

.

I wish Obama would tag him as VP, personally.  I'm sorry to see him leave the campaign.

Edwards might get the call for Obama's VP. Richardson could run the State Deprtment for Clinton or Obama. Rudy may be McCain's AG with Huckabee as VP.

Edwards is the perfect (Dem) fit for AG

I just thought he would wait longer (for possibly a brokered or open convention) and wield his delegate power therein.

This surprised me!

I, too, am sorry to see John Edwards leave this race. I do belive that after last night's Primary in Florida and the shameless manner in which Hillary Clinton tried on national television to appropriate the delegates from Florida and Michigan (when all parties had agreed not to allow delegates from these states to count due to Primary scheduling changes) the Edwards camp made a big decision to leave the race. I firmly believe most Edwards supporters hate the status quo and the old way of doing business in Washington. Hillary Clinton is the status quo of divisiveness and parced politics which means very little ever gets accomplished for the public good.  Edwards staying in the race only meant siphoning off Obama votes. I hope every Edwards supporter goes full throttle for Obama at this point.

The ongoing analysis from all the networks last night remarked how much McCain wants Huckabee to stay in the race to siphon off Romeny support, which will allow him to take delegates from big winner-take-all-states with only 30 plus percentage points of the votes. The Democratic race is different in that votes are garnered through Congressional districts with the winners being apportioned votes throughout the states. I guess the strategy was to ensure every vote meant something during the Primary campaigns for Democrats.  The way these two very different approaches is working out this year seems to be inviting big convention showdowns for both parties. Very interesting!

Thank you John Edwards for having the courage to present real issues of importance to the American electorate, and for trying to help at this very critical juncture the candidate who offers voters a real chance for change. Go Obama!!!!

The DNC certainly came off as a pack of idiots with the Michigan and now Florida "no delegates" primary debacle. If it's still undecided going into the convention, of course those state's delegates will matter bigtime. Who do they think they're kidding?

I wouldn't doubt Lieberman getting tagged as VP if McCain gets the nod.  I'd love to see Obama/Edwards as my second choice on the D side now.

Chico. I agree. I thought that Edwards would stay in the race until the convention and then play King maker and  throw his delegates to Obama in exchange for the AG position, I guess they have already made a deal
