Officer Rikki's bio

Breed: Bloodhound

DOB: 10/05/05 Birthplace: Quebec, Canada

Rikki

Her partner and handler is Senior Officer Andrea Pflugh.  Rikki is the first Bloodhound for the Bakersfield Police Department. Her specialty is tracking/trailing.  Rikki will be trained to follow the individual scent of a human.  Rikki will be utilized to find missing children, Alzheimer's patients and even bad guys as long as she has an item from that person to smell and get their scent.  Rikki is very loving and good natured.  Her favorite past times are swimming and drooling.

Sometimes I wish I still had Rufus.

I bet this Gal will start a tradition in the PD. I sure hope so.

They are the BEST!

They are hiring Canadians now? There goes the force.........

I bet she barks with a funny accent.

She goes,  "Woof, eh?, woof ,eh?"

Gotta watch those Canucks!

LOL LOL LOL!!!!!  EH?

They are great dogs.  If I had one of those along with my Border Collie...heck...I would never be able to sneak away...it would be like house arrest

A blood hound is such an obvious breed for the BPD, I wonder what took so long. If Rikki is from Canada, he'll have make some radical adjustments. If I had acreage or a large back yard, my first choice would be a bloodhound or coon dog.

Careful what you call that second breed in your post there Cat. You never know, the  "Race Police" may take exception (ML, et al.......)

Take a look at this Cat, first Muni PD in CA to utilize the service of a blood......

Now THAT was wierd. My last post replaced the first one so they look out of phase (kinda like ML on race BTW) in context.............

Now they are back  "in order"

Wierd..................

She also loves tennis balls!

Thanks for the link, Chico. It was informative but should not surprise anybody who knows about blood hounds (or raccoon hounds).

Haha -- racoon -- good rejoinder!

(just looking out for you)

Hey, how 'bout this for them squirrels?

My bro in law has been a guide for many years..uses dogs for tracking..my fav out of all of them was Boone..blood hound he had shipped in as a pup..he was the leader of the pack which was unfortunately his downfall..

his drive too please and be the first one to the bear pig or whatever..caused a few disagreements with other peoples dogs that brought them along to hunt....He LOVED people..just don't let ur dog mess with his trophy..you need a pack to hunt big game like bear etc cause a loner could get killed pretty easy..

everybody thought the world of Boone so for his safety as well as dogs he didn't know..He eventually had to sell him to a family that just loved the breed where he became a couch potato/*grin*

but an application like this would have been perfect....wish they would have thought of this a few years ago...one thing..how they gonna keep this guy quiet so they can catch  da bad guys?? Once they get the scent they get pretty vocal..well Boone did..

The sweet sound of a hound on scent. Music!

The dogs I have seen PD's and SO's use for tracking are so controlled (through harness for one thing) by handler that they don't bay like unfettered  "hounds on scent trail" like you usually see. They might a little but not like in regular hunting type  trailing.

But I'll bet if you asked Rikki's handler, she would tell you that she can let loose at the moon everyonce in awhile!

BAWWOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!   BAWWOOOOOOOOOO!

You know it's on when the dogs go off......................

Mock not, Chico. Even as we blog the squirrels are plotting their vengeance...

Only other breed I especially like is husky. When I was in Alaska, "dog" meant malamute or husky. If you were talking about something else you had to say "poodle," "beagle," or whatever.

By the way, there really is a girl behind every tree in Nome.

And, of course, if you go to Alaska underweight and skinny you'll come back a husky fu lover.

Doncha just love it Tony:

Rikki and her handler were on KGET this AM promoting a howl at the moon 5k,10k event this Saturday at the Riverwalk Park 8:30 PM.  It is a fund raiser for the K9 unit  of the BPD I believe.

posted by ChicoEsquela on Jul 16, 2008 at 11:34 AM

Where is that park at?

I think I'll just pile a bunch of the grandkids ina truck and head down there for that.

Let em see a real dog.

Will they be there?

posted by sys_mom on Jul 16, 2008 at 11:39 AM

Chico,  I searched for a link to the original "news" from KGET but I could not find it.  I believe they said that Rikki will be there.  This will be the 7th annual howlin at the moon run.   Maybe KGET will repeat the item on their news at noon.

edit----nine18kk says in a following post Rikki won't be there.  Thank you  nine18kk

Can the kids fish in that lake?

posted by OldBlue56 on Jul 16, 2008 at 12:10 PM

Chico, this is the "lake" that was in the news last week where the guy came out covered with leeches. It's not intended to be a swimming or fishing lake, but that doesn't stop people from doing it anyway.

posted by ChicoEsquela on Jul 16, 2008 at 12:19 PM

Leeches, eh?

Hmmmmmm.....................

Thinking about appropriate bait now...............

And one of the kids in particular..........................

http://www.bakersfieldcity....

This is the link to the details of the event.   There is a contact phone number.

Also...not to sound like the event guru of Bakersfield but the Friend's of the Library are having a book sale.  It is open to the public at the Beale Library Friday, Saturday and Monday.   Lots and lots of used books.  Reasonable prices.

posted by nine18kk on Jul 16, 2008 at 12:48 PM

Officer Pflugh is in charge of this event and will be in attendance but because she will be so busy she is unable to take Rikki.

posted by sys_mom on Jul 16, 2008 at 12:58 PM

Well that is too bad.   I'm sure it will be a fun time none the less.  BPD website says "Raffle prizes, food and events for the whole family"  I'm trying to get the runners of my tribe to show some interest but they all seem to have slug fever.

posted by catpaw on Jul 16, 2008 at 01:15 PM

Take salt, Chico. Instead of leading your grandkids astray with your squirrel-shootin' influence, you can show them how to melt leeches with salt.
