Mark Derlago is headed back to Bakersfield. Derlago, who scored 57 points (39 goals, 18 assists)  in 68 games as a rookie with the Condors last season got a sniff of the American Hockey League with the Manitoba Moose last season and signed a contract with the Moose this past summer. Bakersfield retained his ECHL rights and on Tuesday Derlago was re-assigned to the Condors by the Moose. Derlago’s 39 goals led all ECHL rookies last season and was third overall. Derlago will...

It was only practice. Practice, as Alan Iverson might point out. We’re talking about practice! Yep. It was only practice for the Bakersfield Condors Sunday at the Ice Sports Center but it was also the annual Open House and upwards of 1,000 fans came out to see practice. That’s more than some current, and past, ECHL teams draw for games. Even playoff games. Interest is running high this season in Bakersfield, no doubt partially fed by Bakersfield’s affiliation with...

There were only 19 players on the ice for the Condors on Saturday as they opened training camp in Bakersfield at the Ice Sports Center but the cavalry is on it’s way — up to 10 more players are expected to join the team before a series of three straight preseason games starting on Oct. 10. That will make for some difficult decisions for Condors coaching staff, which has a lot of players battling for just a few open roster positions. 7 “There are a lot of good hockey...

The Condors will be a little short on bodies when they open training camp at the Honda Center in Anaheim on Friday, but there should be plenty of bodies to call upon when they head into the first of three straight nights of preseason games on Oct. 10. Bakersfield opens training camp with 17 skaters (including five tryout players). Forwards Matt Pope and Dale Reinhardt will be on hand on Saturday for practice back in Bakersfield and defensemen Martin Frechette and Tom Morrow should be in...

The  Condors open training camp Oct. 3 (on the ice at Honda Center in Anaheim no less) but seven contracted players have been, or currently are in American Hockey League camps. If anyone doubts the benefit of an affiliation, just remember that the Condors have never had more than three contracted players at AHL camps in any past season. Defeneseman Chris Kaufman was in camp with the Norfolk Admirals (which opened on Sept.22) but has been released and will soon be in Bakersfield. ...

The Anaheim Ducks are giving goaltender David McKee a second chance and that could lead to the former Hobey Baker finalist trying to jump start his career in Bakersfield. The Condors have yet to make an announcement (expect that today) but they have secured McKee’s ECHL rights and the third-year pro is participating in the Ducks Rookie Camp which concludes Tuesday night in Las Vegas with a game against the San Jose Sharks rookie. McKee, who was one of three finalists for the the...

There certainly remain some holes to fill before training camp starts on Oct. 3, but the Condors filled a sizeable gap on Tuesday when they announced defenseman Kevin Truelson will be returning for a fourth straight season. Truelson is an offensive-minded defenseman: he skates well, has good stick handling skill and has a heavy enough shot from the point to quarterback the power play. He has led the Condors in scoring by a defenseman for all three of his previous seasons, has been in the...

There was plenty of criticism of the Condors during the 2007-2008 ECHL season and much of it  justified and the team underachieved for three-quarters of the season and languished in last place in the National Conference. There should be nothing but praise for the Condors now, who made an improbable late-season run to the playoffs and saw their season come to a close Tuesday night in Victoria, B.C. The  Salmon Kings won 6-5 in overtime to win the National Conference quarterfinal...

Condors coach Marty Raymond said his team simply imploded under pressure and that pretty much summed up how the Condors allowed the Victoria Salmon Kings to steal a win Saturday night at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre in Victoria, B.C. Up 3-1 and on a power play with just over 12 minutes left, the Condors gave up two short-handed goals to give the Salmon Kings life. Victoria scored the game-winning goal with 3:30 remaining as the Condors were outshot 16-4 in the final 20 minutes. Now the...

One is the loneliest number, or so Three Dog Night sang back in 1969. But to the Condors, one is the magic number. The Condors need one more point (out of a possible four) in their final two games (Thursday night in Phoenix and Friday night in Las Vegas) to lock up a berth in the playoffs — a feat that seemed improbable at best just a few short weeks ago. An injection of youthful exuberance brought about by fresh-out-of-college players such a Dale Reinhardt (four goals, two...
