It's not a coincidence that Bakersfield's recent hot streak — 4-1-2 — coincides with red-hot rookie Mark Derlago, who has 10 goals in his past seven games. Derlago, of Brandon, Manitoba, led the WHL junior league last year in goals with 46, most of those coming from around the net where he likes to roam. Most often Derlago is already in his prime scoring territory when he gets the puck, but on Jan. 25 he made a spectacular play to get to the slot before firing a shot high...

The Condors head into the second half of the ECHL season on a bit of a roll — 3-0-1 — and coming off a six-day layoff due to the ECHL All-Star break. The team has been reworked a bit since early January with the addition of goaltender Michel Robinson and forwards Jason Kostadine, Tom Boudreau and Chris Di Ubaldo, who will make his home debut on Friday night against Phoenix. The new players bring a new attitude to the team and do not carry any baggage that may have been...

The Condors are starting to believe and so are their fans. That’s what winning will do. Bakersfield (11-20-7) still has a long way to go in the quest to turn its season around, but the last four games have produced the type of hockey the fans expected when the season got under way in October. It took half a season, several changes, a lot of talk and a couple of nasty practices but the Condors, who are 3-0-1 in their last four, finally appear to be a cohesive unit — a team....

It’s too early to say the Condors have turned the corner and are headed in the right direction, but two wins and an overtime loss in three games following a stormy week certainly shows the players have responded. Now its up to the players to remain focused and motivated in their quest to get back into the National Conference playoff race. The Condors trail Phoenix (their closest quarry) by five points heading into Friday night’s game against Las Vegas. With 34 games remaining...

The Condors showed a bit of fight Thursday morning during the first of two hour-long practices at Bakersfield Ice Sports. The rare mid-season double practice was brought about by a 4-0 loss to Phoenix on Tuesday and a meeting following that game.  If Condors coach Marty Raymond was looking to light a fire under his charges, it worked. The first practice was so intense that defenseman David Kudelka and forward Todd Griiffith got into a brief altercation. “At least...

Forty-two games remain for the Condors to try to right a heavily listing ship but if the team wants to have any realistic chance of making to the playoffs January will be a pivotal month. The Condors head into the New Year last in the nine-team National Conference. Eight of the teams make the playoffs, which a darn good thing for the Condors, but they are six points behind Phoenix and seven points behind Stockton. Bakersfield plays 11 games in January and can ill afford to fall farther...
