A BC romp sets up a real showdown
BC crushed Glendale 49-3 on Saturday night, setting the stage for a Northern National Conference title game next Saturday. Ventura improved to 3-0 in the NNC with a 23-6 win over Canyons. BC went to 4-0 with its win tonight (Oct. 24). So whoever wins next Saturday's game at BC between the Renegades and Ventura will undoubtedly be the outright champion. The loser will make the SoCal playoffs but might not be in the top 4 for seeding purposes, which would mean a road game to open the playoffs. It looks like BC will go into next week's showdown without its most dominant defensive player, defensive lineman Maurice Hayes, who suffered a right knee injury in the third quarter against Glendale. Hayes was helped off the field. By the end of the game, his right leg was immobilized in a knee brace and he was on crutches. I'd say it's highly likely his season is over; in the very least, he'll be out awhile. The injury occurred when his right foot was planted and didn't give way as a mass of humanity converged on a ball carrier. Glendale has that special artificial turf that is becoming more common. The attraction: a big cash outlay, but then little maintenance for several years. I remember how the old astroturf would create severe knee injuries, but I haven't heard about injury history with this new turf. Hayes' loss will be felt big-time, not only because of his talent, but because of his leadership and on-field fiery attitude that rubs off on his BC teammates.

So why can't they get the job done against teams that actually MATTER like El Camino? Is the league they play in really that powder-puff compared to the other leagues in California? I'm not impressed that they can beat up on teams from the San Fernando Valley each week. Secondly, WHY are they playing guys IN FRONT of Julian Dean-Johnson? Besides being a freshman he's much more electrifying than the guys playing in front of him. I'm not sure what his stats were yet in this last game since I wasn't there, but in past games he's averaging over 10 yds per carry. Why just hide this guy away until the fourt quarter when the game is out of hand. Size? Friessen was about the same size! posted by

The conference BC is playing in is a tough one. COC has won it year in and year out except for our great 2007 season. This year COC is down with three losses, it happens. The teams from down south are usually better, but that was not the case years ago when BC was KILLING Grossmont and other teams from south. The truth is, they have better players. Think about it. You can play in Bakersfield, Ventura, Valencia, or you can play in San Diego or Orange County. BC has tradition and coaching and facilities. Some 17 year old punk from HS hears BEACHES and 76* in August AND December. Not hard decision for them. As for Julian, I agree he should get more touches to open up the offence and spread it wide. But you don't put him in front of a proven leader like Ben Estill, who runs like a truck and makes guys tired from bouncing off him and trying to bring him down. I have not liked the running back rotation, I think you bruise with Ben, then bring in Julian to make the defense think twice about blitzing or using a linebacker to cover him, opening up the wide receivers. Of course, if it was that easy WE would be coaching. The loss of Maurice will hurt the Gades I fear, as this weekend vs. Ventura they play a team with an offense have ALWAYS had trouble with in an accurate passing QB who can scramble and run for it. Could be a tough game. I hope BC comes out not down with losing Big Mo
