I caught that story on HLN early this morning. Also watched it on Today. David Gregory (host of Meet the Press) pointed out that the prize had to have been conferred just 12 days after the president's inaugeration. A possibility he did not mention is it could be there weren't many candidates for the peace prize to pick from. Recall if you can, a couple of decades ago the peace prize was not awarded for about five years. There were no candidates who warranted a prize for world peace. posted by

That's exactly what I'm thinking, catpaw. While I support the President, this is definitely a shocker, and I wouldn't at all be surprised if he was the only candidate that stood out, even with the limited amount of time he's been in office. posted by

By the way, Today also said Teddy Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson and Jimmy Carter were the only other US presidents to get the peace prize. Didn't say if they were still in office or not. Which brings up a question that occurred to me: A gift to a president in office from a foreign country belongs to the American people if it is over a certain modest value ($350, I think). Does the president get to keep the million dollar-plus amount? posted by

Look where we came from with Dubya and the global image he presented the past 8 years and President Obama and the global image he's presented for the U.S. in the past one year. We needed this, and thank you Mr. Obama for your contributions to restoring the United State's image in the world's eyes. This is who we are. posted by

that the prize had to have been conferred just 12 days after the president's inaugeration. You may have misheard (although Gregory's an idiot who may have gotten it wrong.) He had to have been *NOMINATED* within 12 days of his inauguration. They've had since then to consider the candidates. . He's keeping it? What arrogance! Nah. He's going to have *EARNED* it by the end of his second term. posted by

When I was young, we would be proud that our President has won a Nobel Peace Prize. Times have changed, and is why I will discuss politics with so very few people. posted by

Answer from the source: http://www.cnn.com/2009/WOR... Edit: To cut to the chase, it was based on President Obama's perceived efforts to restore diplomacy over unilateral belligerence as a means of solving world conflicts. That is very consistent with the purpose of a Peace Prize. posted by

I guess my idea of a prize for peace is different than the committee. I would think there were people who spent years, if not lifetimes, working toward world peace and more deserving. Apparently others (above my pay grade) thought so too from the reports of gasps. A few months of globe trotting hardly seems like a "noble" effort. (pardon the pun) So be it. It's not mine to award anyway. posted by

virgil, what does Bush have to do with this? Can't you ever base an opinion on obama himself and HIS accomplishments or lack of? Low self esteem is always tearing others down to make oneself look better. Careful with your tactics, they don't make obama look any better or worse. Each should be based on THEIR merits and not the failures of others.. posted by

Virgil, I'd be careful using associations as a yard stick to bash anyone if I were you. obama has less than a spotless record. I still have to laugh that you guys can't take any criticism of anything obama without bringing in Bush. If I was in obamas shoes I'd be a little ticked off that no one ever let me stand on my own merits. posted by

AND virgil, I doubt Bush's daughters or nieces or such had any influence on him as president. obama's associations and advisers are another story. Nice of you to rip his daughter though.....when all else fails go for the kids. That's the stock in trade for the left these days. posted by

Virgil, I'd be careful using associations as a yard stick to bash anyone if I were you. obama has less than a spotless record. Obama's record is plenty good enough, despite the lies told about him. Bravo to the Nobel committee. They're trying to help Obama clean the Augean stables, and Obama will be standing on his own merits when he delivers the acceptance speech in Norway this December. And yes, I'd put Obama's record up against Shrub's anyday.

While suturing a cut on the hand of a 75 year old rancher, who's hand was caught in the gate while working cattle, the doctor struck up a conversation with the old man.. Eventually the topic got around to Obama. The old rancher said, 'Well, ya know, Obama is a 'Post Turtle''. Not being familiar with the term, the doctor asked him what a 'post turtle' was. The old rancher said, 'When you’re driving down a country road and you come across a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that's a 'post turtle'. The old rancher saw the puzzled look on the doctor's face so he continued to explain. ‘You know he didn't get up there by himself, he doesn't belong up there, and he doesn't know what to do while he's up there, and you just wonder what kind of dumb ass put him up there to begin with.’ posted by

Obama's foreign policy initiatives reflect a concern for working multi-laterally with rest of the world, Leranem. Like, we used to do. I'm pushing for a different policy in Afghanistan, too ... That's a good point. --virgil posted by

virgil, what does Bush have to do with this? I think it has a lot to do with it. The Nobel Committee is making a political statement in opposition with the pick. I think it's a bit premature but their selection was probably done in good faith to what he is currently doing with his multilateral approach to international relations and his current anti-nuclear policy.
