I came home for lunch and saw this unfold on TV. Now the question is, were these individuals Americans or not.. 108 comments from 25 users

The main shooter was apparently an Army major. He opened fire in/around the soldier readiness center and was then shot and killed by police. posted by

I just read an update from NPR stating there were 3 shooters, one killed and the other two apprehended.
I'm curious to find out the motive, because I highly doubt this is PTSD motivated - that'd usually be an individualistic kind of thing. posted by

It is very sad. I am anxious to hear the whole story. I know quite a bit about PTSD and it is very rare for it to erupt when you are in the midst of "your own". It comes on (a lot of times) when you feel alone and vulnerable in a strange situation or when waking up from a bad dream. This sounds like something that was planned. posted by

I just heard the Major was a Muslim so lets see what comes out of that. They gave his name but i have no idea how to spell it. posted by

I hate to say it, but my first instinct, even before I knew there were multiple shooters, was that this was probably terrorist related.
If this is related to Islamic Terrorism, I'm honestly not surprised in the slightest. posted by

I hate to say it, but my first instinct, even before I knew there were multiple shooters, was that this was probably terrorist related. And it may be. Look at the Holocaust Memorial shootings. Sometimes the terrorist is a lone birther/teabagger. I felt the same way about OK City... posted by

It's definitely terrorist related. You only have to inflict terror to be a Terrorist. Bloods, Crips, Aryan Nation, and MS13 are all types of terrorists. Malvo and Muhammad are, too. posted by

I hear there were 3, which is a conspiracy. InfoWar, chime in please. Seriously, this is bad, bad stuff. If the U. S. Army is infiltrated then we are at the bottom of the deep poo. Can you imagine the effect on morale? There is a different way to fight this so-called War on Terrorism, and it involves intelligence units, FBI, CIA and any other alphabet soup we can throw at them. Soldiers are not trained for this kind of war, nor should they be. posted by

Let me clarify: Islamic Terrorism.
Pogo - I knew it was not a question of if, but how long it would take for our government and/or military to be infiltrated by Islamic fundamentalists. In fact, I was honestly surprised when we didn't see a complete uncovering of dozens of splinter cells throughout the country over the past 7+ years. Maybe I gave 'ole Binny too much credit. posted by

The Army (and other branches) *ARE* infiltrated with radical religious fanatics. Some of them are three-star generals, too. Best root them *ALL* out. . There is a different way to fight this so-called War on Terrorism, and it involves intelligence units, FBI, CIA and any other alphabet soup we can throw at them. Soldiers are not trained for this kind of war, nor should they be. I think we are, in fact, switching over that way. Much too slowly. posted by

We've been infiltrated since the beginning of the war. Remember SGT Akbar fragging his leadership in Kuwait? The military has gangsters, white supremacists, survivalists, and everything in between. I used to live down the street from that theatre about three years ago, btw. posted by

FSG, I'd bet $20 on PTSD/badly treated as the root of this. I really don't see any coordinated-out-of-some-Pakistani-cave connection likely. For one thing, there's *NO* way they'd have used a Major if they had one infiltrated. They'd have used a green recruit. IMHO. Lest we all forget:

Korea was a much simpler time, only worried about g**ks and comc***ks. I'm much more politically correct now. Plus I could go to sleep in my hole and not worry about one of our guys coming after me. posted by

Remember SGT Akbar fragging his leadership in Kuwait? 1) I meant on a grand scale with organization 2) True story: My Grandfather was a church minister until retiring in the mid 1980's. He used to give out $2 bills to children, telling them to keep it and only use it in a real emergency. My Uncle once had to do that back in the late 60's when he realized he didn't have any money to pay for his dinner (I guess the bill was under $2.) Anyway, the first gentleman to die in Operation Iraqi Freedom had a $2 bill on his person - the very $2 bill my Grandfather had given him a few decades earlier. Therefore, I'll never forget Akbar's frag.. for I have a personal connection to it's outcome. FSG, I'd bet $20 on PTSD/badly treated as the root of this. If it turns out to be one gunman, I agree with you. 2 or 3? If not fundamentalistic terrorism, conspiracy at the least.

Well , I won't say it couldn't be PTSD; it can cause you to do strange things (ask my wife). The fact that 2 other soldiers were apparently involved leads me to discount PTSD posted by

Supposedly Hood has a PTSD unit. Yeah they do. I knew some of them quite well. 60 Minutes did a piece on the Combat Stress Teams in Iraq about 4 years ago. That PTSD unit was the one they were following. posted by
