Multiple Gunmen shoot and kill at least 7, wound potential dozens at Fort Hood

I came home for lunch and saw this unfold on TV.  Now the question is, were these individuals Americans or not..

The main shooter was apparently an Army major.  He opened fire in/around the soldier readiness center and was then shot and killed by police.

Texas, FSG.

Sad, sad story whatever turns out.

I just read an update from NPR stating there were 3 shooters, one killed and the other two apprehended.

I'm curious to find out the motive, because I highly doubt this is PTSD motivated - that'd usually be an individualistic kind of thing.

posted by pogo on Nov 5, 2009 at 02:20 PM

It is very sad. I am anxious to hear the whole story.

I know quite a bit about PTSD and it is very rare for it to erupt when you are in the midst of "your own". It comes on (a lot of times) when you feel alone and vulnerable in a strange situation or when waking up from a bad dream.

This sounds like something that was planned.

posted by FloridaStateGrad on Nov 5, 2009 at 02:28 PM

Exactly, Pogo.

Early reports say soldiers are the suspects, including a major.  No details as to why.  12 dead...

posted by phyco_07 on Nov 5, 2009 at 02:45 PM

I just heard the Major was a Muslim so lets see what comes out of that. They gave his name but i have no idea how to spell it.

Malik Nadal Hassan.

So much for "fighting them over there so we don't have to fight them over here."

posted by jfrancais on Nov 5, 2009 at 02:59 PM

Who is 'them', boss?

Them is...us?

posted by randomfactor on Nov 5, 2009 at 02:59 PM

Maj.  Mark Nadal Hassan, USA, United States Citizen, convert to Islam.

We may still be in "lone nut"/PTSD territory.

I hate to say it, but my first instinct, even before I knew there were multiple shooters, was that this was probably terrorist related.

If this is related to Islamic Terrorism, I'm honestly not surprised in the slightest.

Paging Al Capp sorry, Walt Kelly/Pogo.

posted by randomfactor on Nov 5, 2009 at 03:03 PM

I hate to say it, but my first instinct, even before I knew there were multiple shooters, was that this was probably terrorist related.

And it may be.  Look at the Holocaust Memorial shootings.  Sometimes the terrorist is a lone birther/teabagger.

I felt the same way about OK City...

posted by jfrancais on Nov 5, 2009 at 03:07 PM

It's definitely terrorist related.

You only have to inflict terror to be a Terrorist.

Bloods, Crips, Aryan Nation, and MS13 are all types of terrorists.

Malvo and Muhammad are, too.

posted by pogo on Nov 5, 2009 at 03:11 PM

I hear there were 3, which is a conspiracy. InfoWarchime in please.

Seriously, this is bad, bad stuff. If the U. S. Army is infiltrated then we are at the bottom of the deep poo. Can you imagine the effect on morale?

There is a different way to fight this so-called War on Terrorism, and it involves intelligence units, FBI, CIA and any other alphabet soup we can throw at them. Soldiers are not trained for this kind of war, nor should they be.

posted by FloridaStateGrad on Nov 5, 2009 at 03:18 PM

Let me clarify: Islamic Terrorism.

Pogo - I knew it was not a question of if, but how long it would take for our government and/or military to be infiltrated by Islamic fundamentalists.  In fact, I was honestly surprised when we didn't see a complete uncovering of dozens of splinter cells throughout the country over the past 7+ years. Maybe I gave 'ole Binny too much credit.

posted by randomfactor on Nov 5, 2009 at 03:18 PM

The Army (and other branches) *ARE* infiltrated with radical religious fanatics.

Some of them are three-star generals, too.  Best root them *ALL* out.

.

There is a different way to fight this so-called War on Terrorism, and it involves intelligence units, FBI, CIA and any other alphabet soup we can throw at them. Soldiers are not trained for this kind of war, nor should they be.

I think we are, in fact, switching over that way.  Much too slowly.

posted by jfrancais on Nov 5, 2009 at 03:25 PM

We've been infiltrated since the beginning of the war.  Remember SGT Akbar fragging his leadership in Kuwait?

The military has gangsters, white supremacists, survivalists, and everything in between.

I used to live down the street from that theatre about three years ago, btw.

posted by randomfactor on Nov 5, 2009 at 03:25 PM

FSG, I'd bet $20 on PTSD/badly treated as the root of this.  I really don't see any coordinated-out-of-some-Pakistani-cave connection likely.

For one thing, there's *NO* way they'd have used a Major if they had one infiltrated.  They'd have used a green recruit.  IMHO.

Lest we all forget:

Korea was a much simpler time, only worried about g**ks and comc***ks. I'm much more politically correct now. Plus I could go to sleep in my hole and not worry about one of our guys coming after me.

I heard it was bad in Vietnam if you were a fresh louie out of West Point or the Naval Academy.

Remember SGT Akbar fragging his leadership in Kuwait?

1) I meant on a grand scale with organization

2) True story: My Grandfather was a church minister until retiring in the mid 1980's.  He used to give out $2 bills to children, telling them to keep it and only use it in a real emergency.  My Uncle once had to do that back in the late 60's when he realized he didn't have any money to pay for his dinner (I guess the bill was under $2.) Anyway, the first gentleman to die in Operation Iraqi Freedom had a $2 bill on his person - the very $2 bill my Grandfather had given him a few decades earlier.   Therefore, I'll never forget Akbar's frag.. for I have a personal connection to it's outcome.

FSG, I'd bet $20 on PTSD/badly treated as the root of this.

If it turns out to be one gunman, I agree with you.  2 or 3?  If not fundamentalistic terrorism, conspiracy at the least.

Some reports the major was a psychiatrist about to be re-deployed.  Supposedly Hood has a PTSD unit.

Physician, heal thyself?

This damned, stupid, unnecessary war...

posted by FloridaStateGrad on Nov 5, 2009 at 03:36 PM

I just read that too, RF..  I guess I'll wait to find out what these 2 other suspects were up to (if they were even involved) - it could be you're right and I'm just blowing smoke.

posted by pogo on Nov 5, 2009 at 03:40 PM

Well , I won't say it couldn't be PTSD; it can cause you to do strange things (ask my wife). The fact that 2 other soldiers were apparently involved leads me to discount PTSD

posted by jfrancais on Nov 5, 2009 at 03:41 PM

Supposedly Hood has a PTSD unit.

Yeah they do.  I knew some of them quite well.  60 Minutes did a piece on the Combat Stress Teams in Iraq about 4 years ago.  That PTSD unit was the one they were following.

In 1953, after the cease-fire, I was sent back to Korea from Japan (it was either that or the stockade). I seriously considered ending it all, but they promised me no more fighting.

A soldier killed himself at Fort Bliss with his family watching on webcam a few months ago, too.

Back to lone shooter.  Other two "suspects" reportedly released from custody.

The guy snapped.  Sadly, he took many others with him.

It could be one of those evil "Islamo" fascist...oh wait maybe it was a lone nut...oh wait....it was a major who was suffering from PTSD...oh wait......the military was infiltrated by cave dwelling Muslims!! HA HA HA HA

Conspiracy theories *NEVER* turn out to be true.

Lone gunmen, sadly, are a driving force in American history.

Two of them, acting independently five years apart, lengthened the Vietnam tragedy.

Two others, again independently tried and failed to set back the Civil Rights movement although they killed their targets.

Another probably helped wreck the American economy, at least temporarily, by failing in his attempt.  Not that I'd have celebrated him if he'd succeeded.

Why are their people of the Islamic religion, in our military?

I am all for freedom of religion, but why do we allow people that are of a religion, that wants to destroy America, to be in a position to defend the country?

I am curious to see, how Ovomit handles this.

(once again, please feel free to pick apart my grammer.)

I would have to lean away from PTSD. Having been deployed, i know the people in his military field spend 99.99999999999% of their time in an office. The rest of the time are spent in the chow hall or their housing unit.

The rest of the time are spent in the chow hall or their housing unit.

Just for what it's worth, almost a dozen people got killed today in an Army clerical office.

But you're correct--sounds like the guy's under stress but not necessarily traumatic/combat stress (unless he had an earlier deployment).

Fox News and talk radio are the lunatic voices in the head afflicting the country's mentally ill.

For what it's worth, I've got to give limited kudos to Fox.  I haven't watched their coverage but heard a report that they'd actually withheld the suspect's name pending confirmation.  The nutty speculation I heard of came from other networks (although Fox may have been guilty of it too.)

Maybe they *WOULD* like to be a real news organization some day.

Just another headline reminder of the vicious toll war takes on everyone. Just reading the comments here you discern the impact from terrible acts of senseless violence that our misadventures in empire building have wrought. I just heard on NPR that this Major was reprimanded in 2004 for proselytizing within the military.

There really was no good reason to do Iraq, and very little reason to do Afghanistan the way our government chose to do it. Our nation seems to be schizophrenic this decade. Lost without reason and at war with the world at large. We cannot even find it in ourselves to agree on known facts to move beyond all this anger and violence. There is so little trust in people these days that even organizations that have held impeccable long standing credentials get attacked for choosing a side on a social issue.

It is little wonder that suicides within our military ranks are at an all time high. It is because there is so little meaningful work that people are allowed to do today, and so little opportunity to compete effectively in the the world of commerce. We fill our young people with patriotism and tell them there is no finer goal than to serve their country, and yet when they return from duty there is no job and no place for so many of them to go. There are precious few jobs for most college graduates these days, and it makes one ponder why all that money was borrowed and spent to achieve burger flipper status for the majority of grads.

But we reward the monopolists who control beverages, food production, health insurance, media, railroads, airplanes, banking, real estate, energy, computers, Internet, cable/satellite communications, drugs and just about every other enterprise our piece of the "free' market has devised to keep such an unfair economic pyramid scheme afloat.

All these episodes of gross slaughter occurring this decade are huge signposts that some thing very wrong is happening in a very big way here.

but the fact is a MUSLIM, just killed 11 people, and shot dozens more on a U.S military base.

If this doesn't open some peoples eyes, I don't know what to say.
