FunInBako - > Having Fun in Bakersfield -> green tea has caffeine?? arg!!!
green tea has caffeine?? arg!!!

Oh NO!!!! Today I drank 2 whole tea pots of a green tea/passion tea mix that I assumed was caffeine free. I was wondering why I was so alert and cleaning the house at midnight. It turns out I was wrong. Green tea shouldn't have caffeine!! Arg!! I can't even handle a cup of coffee without issues, but I will give the green tea some credit: I haven't had any heart racing or anxiety, so it's not too high in caffeine, I guess. But I had 2 whole pots, including several glasses tonight!!! I'm never going to sleep again... but the house will be clean.

Should I tell you iced tea also has caffeine? Earl grey, chai and other black teas also have caffeine. Only herbal teas like chamomile, mint and so forth are naturally caffeine free. You can find caffeine free (really caffeine removed so there's an itty bitty left sometimes) green tea and black tea. Just read the box to see if it has caffeine or not.

But the caffeine in green and black tea does not approach the amount of caffeine in coffee. Green tea usually has about 25-35mg, which is less than you get in a cup of soda (around 45-50mg in Coke and Pepsi). Black tea has a tad more, perhaps up to 50mg (depends on blend), which is about the same as a cup of soda. Coffee can have anywhere from 50-150mg or more, depending on the blend and brew.

Think your counts are off.  Eight ounces of tea generally have about the same as 12 ounces of cola, making it 50 percent stronger.

100 ml of green tea has about the same caffeine (about 32 mg) as three times as much cola.

Actually, your understanding of how to count caffeine for brewed tea is off RF. My green tea counts came from the back of my green tea box. Same for the black tea. For that brand at least, each bag of green tea contains 25-30mg and each bag of black tea contains 30-50mg (I have several varieties and it varies) when brewed. As I said, it all depends on the blend and brew when it comes to these things.

But the important thing to note is the caffeine count is by BAG, not by volume of the resulting tea. Your chart is based on the volume of the resulting tea, and that just doesn't work for brewed tea because what matters is how many tea leaves you add, not the amount of water it was added to. That chart also says just "tea brewed", which neglects the differences between green, white and black tea.

So I stick by my figures. One bag of green tea has about 25-35mg of caffeine depending on the brand and amount of leaves in the bag. Some brands will be less. Some brands will be more. Regardless if you throw one bag into 8oz, 12oz or 32oz, you're still going to end up with the same amount of caffeine because you only used one bag for the brew. And 25-35mg is still less than a cup of Coke or Pepsi.

I could also point out the time of brewing makes a difference as well, but that might be a little too technical. Point being you can't use "100mL of green tea" off an Internet chart and compare it to 8oz of soda, because the green tea figure isn't accurate due to all the above reasons.

For those that just must have a chart, here's one for tea that's done by the bag:

www.stashtea.com/caffeine.htm

Note that its "by ounce" rating specifically assumes 1 bag of tea is put in 8oz of water when brewed. It probably also assumes a specific brew time, but that is not stated anywhere on the page. I know for my brand of tea, the stated caffeine levels are if you follow their brew time in the instructions (2-3 minutes).

And 25-35mg is still less than a cup of Coke or Pepsi.

Actually, 35 mg is a cup and a half of coke or pepsi.  A standard can, in other words.  You're right to count by the teabag, but I'll bet that isn't how the original poster consumed the tea.

Pepsi One has 55mg per 12 oz (37mg per 8oz) and Diet Coke has 45mg per 12oz (30mg per 8oz). The values of their other offerings vary from around 20mg (Barqs) to nearly 70mg (Coke Blak) per 12oz. So perhaps saying less was incorrect, but you saying more (particularly saying it was 3x more) was also incorrect. The correct saying would be that one bag of green tea is equivalent to a cup and less than a can of soda, on average.

My Tazo tea bags don't have the caffeine markings, but it was probably on the original box. I usually take them out, to save space. I'll keep them from now on, or at least read the package more carefully. I just assumed, which is obviously not the best idea.

Well, the good news is Tazo Passion Tea is caffeine free, so each bag of that you had in the mix was a freebie, heh. The Tazo green tea is caffeinated (unless you specifically bought the one decaf form of it), but Tazo does not say how much caffeine is in their teas. You can probably assume the average. The good news is that Tazo does have decaf green tea, so if you want it decaf, get the Tazo decaf Lotus next time and you'll be good.
