facebook gone bad... what to do when facebook friends attack

I found an interesting fact in Time magazine: Having yourself circumcised lowers your risk of contracting AIDS by 60%. I thought that was interesting, so I posted it on my facebook page. I like to share.

Well, this sparked a debate about whether or not we should regularly circumcise baby boys, then lead to the treacherous territory of whether people should breast feed or not. It turns out I have 2 facebook friends on opposite ends of both debates. My friendly, harmless, interesting fact turned into an all-out facebook war, with how we define motherhood was at the center of that war. I really didn't mean to start a fight, but I certainly didn't do anything to stop it, either. But when the dust settled, I sent them a thank you and told them they were the most fabulouslly interesting people I know.

Their argument was fascinating. It made me realize that my friends don't debate anymore. The only debates I see are on the blogs, and ones I've read tend to spiral down into "no, you're stupid; no YOU are" arguments. I'm glad I touched on a sore subject, even if my facebook friends aren't. It was stimulating to think about issues that are important to how we live our lives.

So, my advice: when facebook friends attack, add more fuel to the fire... and enjoy the debate that follows! I'm now looking for an interesting quote about breast-feeding or parenting, although I might just post a quote from the article I recently read that discusses the fact that abortion lowers the crime rate. That should do the trick!

It's true that abortion does lower the crime rate.  It's also true that circumcised males are less likely to contract or spread STDs.

Yup.

FunInBako: Your observation confirms much of what I've seen in Facebook and especially the Californian blogs. Nobody really wants to discuss anymore. It's easier to hurl insults. I guess I've done my share of that, but I may have to reassess. It seems a waste of time.

Nahhhh..what fun is it to be nicey nice?  You see how many comments get posted on nice blogs don't you?  Even when they do get a few comments, they die out on one page.   You know your blog is a hit when it runs 3 pages, gets totally off topic, and starts a flame war.

My facebook friends are nice and polite---nobody is biting on anyones butt over there---kinda like if you don't have anything nice to say--then don't say it....

I think that it's a refreshing change from the ol' some-o..same-o.......

I agree ling....Every now and then a good battle between strangers keeps your blood flowing.......But for someone to get a thrill from watching their friends fight is wrong on so many levels!...

If you really want to keep a friend you dont bring up certain subjects. theres too big a chance one or the other will say something that has a negative impact on that friendship..of course if you dont really care....FLAME ON! and may the Force be with you.

Yeah, I would hate it if two of my Facebook friends got in a fight over one of my status updates or posts.  I have seen it happen to other friends, though, and have gotten irritated over peoples' comments, but I always try to be cool.  Arguing with your friend's other Facebook friends seems no different from going to a friend's party and arguing with another guest in front of everyone.  Then again, I never post anything controversial--just Youtube songs and goofy personality tests and stuff.

Anyway, I'm too obsessed with Farmville and Happy Aquarium and Hatchlings to comment on too many posts nowadays.  ; )

I keep getting friend requests from people and family on facebook.  I can barely remember my password let alone use the thing.  I just accept and forget to go back.  No blog, no chatter, and have no idea what you guys are talking about.

The only one I check in on besides TBC is this one..and it's pretty boring most of the time..but always chummy.  http://chatboards.ebay.com/...

I have a myspace too but no clue what the password is.

I love my Facebook friends. It's like dropping in at a coffee shop. You're not quite sure who will be there or what they'll have to say, but you know the vibe will always be cool. Especially if I've had a bad or stressful day I know I can go there and see something that will make me smile. The hatchlings don't hurt, either.

Tanya, what did you hope to gain by this post?

What exactly is "the trick"? And you teach high school, right? Public?

The problem started when first TIME and then you completely misinterpretted the Africa research.

Infant circumcision does not lower "your" risk of contracting AIDS by 60%.

Adult circumcision appears to have reduced the incidence of female-to-male transmission in an African population with a very high baseline HIV incidence, during a very short study among men who had already chosen for cultural reasons to get circumcised, and who got free condoms and many chances to interact with doctors about safe sex practices after the procedure - VS men who did not get the same doctor interaction and who had no post-surgical period of abstinence and who had not yet had their sought-after life-changing coming-of-age circumcision ritual performed.  But note that the study was cut short of its pre-agreed protocol period, doubling the effect of the cut mens abstinence during healing.  Note also that some cut men DID indeed contract HIV - at a rate six times higher than the rate of new infections among African-American men.  Note also that many more men dropped out of the study - their status unknown - than become infected in either the cut or intact group.

Most importantly note that the HIV+ men they cut were 50% MORE likely to infect their partners than the HIV+ men they left intact.
Note also that the whole debacle was a barbaric immoral experiment on poorly informed human beings.  They tested men, some of whom they found HIV+, and then LET THEM INFECT THEIR PARTNER S.  Would such cruelty and disregard for human life be tolerated in a study done in the US?  These "scientists" are merely monsters.  They've also proven female circumcision reduces HIV incidence, by the way.

Condoms and safer sex practices thwart HIV.  Most of the US men who have died of AIDS were circumcised at birth.  Circumcision does not prevent AIDS, but even if it was 100% effective, infants don't have sex.  Foreskin feels REALLY good.  It's HIS body, and it's HIS decision (when he's a fully informed adult) how to thwart STDs.
