The Kiss
I just got out of an interview with Kern County Sheriff Mack Wimbish and his challenger, Donny Youngblood. They were speaking before the editorial board of The Bakersfield Californian.
I've covered some pretty nasty political races in my time, so it was rather nice to see this pair disagree with each other so affectionately. In fact, I don't think I've ever seen two political adversaries more affectionate in my life. When the interview was done, Wimbish planted a kiss on Youngblood — true it was on the back of the head — but it was definately a kiss. “That was payback for the hug I gave him last week,” Youngblood said. Wimbish and Youngblood can't agree on much about how the Sheriff's department has been run for the last four years. Both have people who love or hate them with equal passion. But at least this pair of political adversaries knows how to get along. James Burger 11 comments from 7 users

If it was a real race, they would both lose!

Youngblood is always bragging that he is more qualified. "I was a deputy in the Sheriff department, and you weren't he proudly explains. He proudly beats his chest with his "impressive" credentials. What he forgets is that the Sheriff works for the people, and frankly we don't like him. Why? Maybe because we smell an arrogance in him, that Mack doesn't have. Mack, like Carl Sparks, seems like he is in it for us, while Youngblood feels the job is owed to him for his time spent in the sheriff department. Mack put in his time in law enforcement at the CHP. I feel he is getting the job done. Mack is getting my vote.

The ONLY thing Mack is in it for is himself. He doesn't run the department, his staff does. He doesn't do the budget, the BOS does. He is a verified liar who couldn't tell the truth even if he knew what the truth was! Mack has the blue hair set and the church goers snowed. Just because he shows up at functions doesn't mean he knows how to run the Sheriff's Department. Donny has worked from the bottom up. Mack never got off the bottom of the CHP. He was a patrolman for 10 years, tested, couldn't promote, then became the trafic reporter for the rest of his time. He never, ever supervised even one person before he became Sheriff. Everyone wanted an "outsider" who wasn't a "good old boy". Mack is what you chose. The staffing levels under him have decreased even though we have funding. His upper management has gotten out and their replacements are ridiculous brown nosers who weren't competant in their old jobs but now have spiffy new emblems on their uniforms. The moral is at an all time low. 84% of the department voted to back Donny but do you think anyone will come out publicly against Mack? Hell no, he holds a grudge and you may end up working in Boron. Donny doesn't feel he is owed anything. He sees what is wrong and actually knows how to fix it. Mack is clueless. What is wrong with bragging you are more qualified? He is. There is no question. Mack isn't even qualified to be a Senior Deputy much less Sheriff. What exactly has he "gotten done"? Low moral? yes. Beatings, death in the jails? yes. Record breaking number of lawsuits against the county? yes. Wow, I'm impressed.
PS. do not ever compare Mack to Carl, Mack is not worthy enough to carry Carls shoes. posted by

Its funny that Donny Youngblood says that he is highly educated and with the back east incident when he lost his money and wants us to pay for his dumb mistake. Then Youngblood says he is somewhat "naive" the merriam-webster 11th ed. defines naive as a deficient in worldly wisdom or informed judgement. Now ask yourself how can you be highly educated and naive, and now he wants to be our sheriff, haha. The race looks like is dumb twostep talking Wimbish and dumber Youngblood I very educated but I some naive. I guess I'll be voting for Goofy, wait goofy is not running. what to do what to do!!!

Ha Ha Ha!
The people have spoken and spoken LOUDLY. Those Deputy Sheriff's who were going to retire en-masse are no longer Hell-bent upon leaving and they look forward to an educated and professional Sheriff who will bring dignity to the office of Sheriff of Kern County. Donny Youngblood has my congratulations and the Sheriff Department is on it's way to regaining the respect it enjoyed when Carl Sparks was Sheriff. While the public can be hoodwinked once, it's a lot more difficult to hoodwink them into voting for an incompetent a second time around. Bye Mack. Have a happy retirement :-)

Everybody is popular for awhile. Within 18 months, the paper will be demanding Youngblood's head on a plate. "Respect"? The kind of respect that Youngblood showed when his pocket was picked by a hooker and he requested reimbursement from the Dept.? His repeat DUI son? Please !!! posted by

Mack turned down County retirement, County medical, and paid for his own phone. Why all the hate? So many axes to grind; so little time. Things did not get better or worse under Wimbish; I expect more of the same from Youngblood. You would think from reading the entries here that everyone has daily interaction with the KCSO. Those who hate law enforcement will continue to do so, regardless of who is serving as Sheriff. And our local paper will continue to rail against him if he is not the one ordained by the paper. The Californian never forgave Wimbish for beating Steve Perez. Youngblood will probably be allright for awhile, unless there is a high-profile arrest of a prominent local Hispanic citizen. Then the paper will, in an effort to sell more papers at the Mercados, bring up all Youngblood's baggage. I have lived here since 1958 and have met a deputy exactly one time, in 1976. Life goes on. In a few years, one of the guys who lost the race, will be announcing he is running for Sheriff and that ". . . we can do better than Youngblood."

Mack did not "turn down" the county retirement, he is not eligible for it. You have to work for the county for 5 years to be vested, thank God he won't hit that mark. He has full medical from his retirement from the state, no hardship not to take the county plan that he would have had to pay 20% of his premium. He was not on any special squads to qualify him to carry a county cell phone. Excuse me for being under-whelmed by his performance as sheriff. He was not a leader, he let his underlings (hand picked by him yet 80% of whom supported Youngblood) run the department with their own agendas. If Marty Williamson isn't filling out retirement papers after his failed attempt at Tehachapi chief of police, I would be shocked. Mack has had a record number of lawsuits against him and the county, unfortunately for Donny, most of which will be paid during his terms. He is a liar who has had to correct his own statements more times than I can count. I still haven't heard him correct his statements he made about the DO's union during his debate on TV. For those of us who work there and call the department our family, I am very glad Mack will spend his holidays packing his hairspray and mirrors and going home. posted by

How dare the voters elect someone other than who the deputies wanted.
