County budget report - Q1 2009-2010 budget
Supes are getting their report on the performance of the county of Kern's 2009-2010 budget in the first three months of the fiscal year. The county is tracking an $11 million shortfall in revenues in the time period. Spending is tracking per budget. It's to early to worry, county budget staff said. "We feel its premature to begin projecting the year-end cash balance," said Budget Director Gloria Dominguez. 2 comments from 1 users

CAO John Nilon is responding to a question from Mike Maggard about the large, unexpected carry-over balance that appeared right at budget time in June and July. Nilon said the county administrative office is regularly visiting the various county departments and keeping a very close finger on the financial pulses there so that there will be no surprise this year. He said the Auditor-Controller's Department is continuing to provide data to the CAO's budget analysts but that the CAO's office is in charge and is using their real life interaction with departments to flesh out basic budget data.

Also, Supervisors have named a new Public Defender following the retirement of Mark Arnold. Art Titus is the new pick. Chairman Jon McQuiston called Titus' experience as an attorney and an administrator "outstanding."
