Evacuation plan - some maps
A good resource for pre-planning your route out of Bakersfield in the event one of the dams at Isabella Lake fails are maps included in the power-point presentation OES Chief Georgianna Armstrong presented to the Board of Supervisors today. Here's a slimmed down version of her power point with just the maps. She said better versions will be available to the public after the plan has final approval. 19 comments from 11 users

I guess I am an idiot skeptic ... I have lived in flood zones before, but we drive past L I about 2 - 3 times a month, and i guess looks MUST be deceiving, because that lake looks like a dried-up raisin to me, what IS the estimated amount of water IN the lake, would Oildale flood? (i am too busy/lazy to look at the virtual maps) posted by

The hydraulic effect of that much water coming out of the mouth of the canyon will be INSANE---- Streets will be clogged--phones jammed--mass hysteria..TOO MANY people to move in too short of time--- I'm getting our Emergancy Rations and equipment and putting them on top of the roof--(it's flat up there)--dog--the Mrs. and all the water we can store in any container--- And my sign when the helicopters fly over to drop V-8 Spicy Tomato Juice and Beer---we can wait--we're cool here... Don't forget when the water goes through Kern River Oil Fields and orchards--and makes its way to the Aquaduct--L.A. water supply is Screwed---so will be ours....

These evacuation 'Planners' must realize that these people here will NOT believe it until they see it--then its too late--- Foodmax--30 pack beer---$13.00---watching the flood from the roof-drunk...priceless... posted by

Funny it looks like the people in the Southwest Zone on the PPT file are being sent in to the center of Lake Kern were the water from the Kern river used to flow to? posted by

so...are these maps using the idea that the lake would be near full capacity...or have they used the 20% full numbers they have kept the lake level at since they found that fault? posted by

I'd imagine at peak levels~ I am close to hwy 99 but the plan has me heading east on Brundage ~ according to the map into the path of heavier water....of course I'll be walking (no car) so it's the roof for me. Luckily I am agile. ;-) posted by

What are the green circles on the evacuation maps? Why is there no legend or key for these maps or major street names on the map showing the flood innundation? Is the predicted flood plain assuming both dams failures? posted by

flak, As the original post states these are preliminary versions of the maps culled from a power-point presentation delivered Tuesday. Better versions, probably with those legends and keys you want, will be developed by OES once the evacuation plan has been approved by the city. What your overlay map doesn't have are the recommended evacuation routes out of the city. posted by

I'm not going to worry too much until the drought ends. In any case, I don't think we'll see Isabella get anywhere near as full as it used to be. AC of E will make sure of that. posted by

You hit on the biggest point Audrey. Until the dam is full, the risk of a failure happening is minimal. And, if it did, Bakersfield would be far less flooeded that the worst case mapping estimates. posted by

I live on the east side, just a couple of blocks south of Panorama Drive, east of Garces HS. Looks like I’ll be high and dry if the big flood were to happen.
Everybody bring a tent and sleeping bag, and ya’ll can hang out till the water recedes.

We're above the flood plain as well. Anyone who can't make it to Don's can come over here, although something tells me you'll all go to Ling's. posted by
