Who's in Control Here?

I'm sitting here wondering about Bakersfield.  I'm thinking about the politics here.  I have to admit they aren't nearly as bad as some places I've heard of.  But I still wonder.  When you think about politics in the United States, I think corruption, uselessness, money, and interest groups.  I'm sure there are plenty more words to throw in there.  But what I'm really interested in is politics in Bakersfield.  Or, politics in Kern County.

Who's in control here?  Who pulls the most weight?  Where is the money concentrated?  Does Abernathy and his people control the cities politics.  I see a lot of groups, and people, who despise the Abernathy crowd, but have you noticed that the best politicians in town seem to be from his group?  I'm not saying that it's a problem....

I think it's important for us to ask ourselves these questions.  What are your thoughts?

Who calls the shots? It's mostly big Agriculture. Big oil is too big to worry about this economy and local politics. They don't live here. They only come here to pump.

Big Agriculture is local, for the most part. A lot of it is several generations deep in this valley and they all know each other and work together to help out the local industry. Be glad for it and find yourself a niche within that industry and it'll be good for you. Otherwise, you're on your own.

Understand that the whole San Joaquin Valley was populated and built on the Ag industry. Oil came later and created a boom in the southern end of the valley. Oil goes up and down while Ag is a lot more stable.
