Faith, Family and Sports
Just wanted to give a little background information before I discuss the topic. My wife, newborn son and I moved here from Gastonia, N.C., a suburb of Charlotte, in December. During my time in the area, I attended a few Charlotte Bobcats games and I'm still on the team's e-mail list. Charlotte was the home of Jim and Tammy Faye Baker's Heritage USA and of course the PTL Club, so needless to say the Bibles thump non-stop.

Anyway, I received this promotional e-mail from the Bobcats today with the subject line: Faith and Family Night. The Bobcats didn't come right and say what faith but there are three Christian performers singing before and after the game.

This isn't the first time a professional sports team has had a promotion involving religious affiliation. The Atlanta Braves have had successful Faith and Family games for the past three years. With one exception, Colorado Springs, Colo.-based Focus on the Family was thrown out  of -- OK, asked to leave -- a Braves' game for comments made during a pre-game rally regarding, "The Sins of Homosexuality."

How far is too far? Would any of the minor league teams in Bakersfield have a promotion such as this? Would you support? Would you attend?

I'll leave the rest up to you.

Maybe Bakersfield could host a PBA tournament call the Homosexual Bowl? Maybe not...

Have you seen Jay Baker's reality show One Punk Under God? The first episode I saw was Jay touring the old Heritage USA park. Kind of eeire.

Wouldn't support it, and I'd rather pull weeds in the middle of summer at 4:30 in the afternoon than attend a minor league basketball game on faith day. Yes that in fact would mean that I would rather suffer heat stroke than go to a sporting event like that. They'd get a nasty email back from me as well. Basically it tells their non religious fans that they won't feel very welcome if they attend that game. I would actually consider not attending another game if my team did that.

Perhaps the Bobcats are lacking in attendance and need some boost. I might suggest cheap beer night or something like that rather than an exclusionary tactic such as this.

Has anyone been to a Blitz game? The one game I attended they beat the crowd over the head with religion and prayer and then brought out the army recruiters. Needless to say I won't go back.

The Condors had a faith night - or a very close approximation.  It was great in that it 1) helped draw a larger than usual crowd.  2) there was great joy in the irony of hearing a substantial crowd of Christians chant, "Ref, you suck."  Actually if you didn't look at the welcome board, or weren't one of the people attending with your church, the only difference you would have noticed was a better turnout.

We all stand and face the flag bfore the game.  At the Trojan football games many, many alumni sing the national anthem - let it go, dems.  Everything does not have to be political or some sort of social stand.  Hockey, baseball, basketball - the more fans the better.

Heaven forbid a church youth group be invited to a sporting event.  I am not sure the constitution would allow it, since they play in a public building.  But by all means, the Condors should have a Convict and Gang night.  Half price tickets to all gang members wearing their colors..  I bet Pete would be honored to attend that game.
