Chick-fil-A on the way
David Pauling was kicking himself before. Now he's kicking himself harder. The Bakersfield resident learned Monday (when we told him) that Chick-fil-A plans to open a restaurant in Bakersfield later this year. That hurts, he said, because his father offered not long ago to buy him a franchise. And he turned it down. If you haven't tried Chick-fil-A, you haven't tried some of the most popular chicken sandwiches in the South. They're simple— buns, pickles, breast of chicken — but they inspire people to drive across town, or farther, to get some. On Monday, a company spokeswoman confirmed that the Atlanta-based chain expects to open at the northeast corner of Stockdale Highway and California Avenue in the fourth quarter — January at the latest. Two years ago the company opened its first stand-alone restaurant in the Los Angeles area, she said, and now it's time to expand into the Central Valley. Pauling and his wife, Dana, were more than a little happy with the news. "It's a fantastic product," he said, adding that the nearest Chick-fil-A he has tried in California was in Sacramento. His wife was downright superlative as the two of them left the Popeyes on Chester Avenue. "KFC can just go away. This one (the Popeyes) is good. But Chick-fil-A is the best," she said. 19 comments from 18 users

Please, no more fast food. Yes, KFC could disappear and I would not care. Popeyes is good. Church's is the best. Hope this is more that just fast food chicken and more chicken.

Am I incorrect in saying that Chick-fil-A was, at one time, located in the Valley Plaza in Bakersfield?

Didn't like it when it was at the plaza! Why do they think this will work now as opposed to when it was at the plaza and failed??? posted by

I figured they had just left the mall as it has gone so far downhill. Chick-fil-A is a closed-on-Sunday, family-friendly business. Valley Plaza is no longer what I would call family-friendly. posted by

Why should we support a fast food chain that deserted us years ago and now wants to come back to reap the profits of our growing city? I say boycott them! I was never impressed with the place when it was in the Valley Plaza as it was. posted by

To boycott ChickFilA is to cut off your taste buds to spite your tongue! Their product is the BEST chicken I have ever had, and they actually were one of the first fast-food chains to offer healthy choices as well as the absoutely sinful breaded breast sandwich. I don't care if they were run out of town on a rail, I can't wait until they come back! posted by

First good news I've heard this year. I was dissappointed when it went out of business at Valley Plaza Mall. A great chicken sandwich. Chris Clardy posted by

I am SO excited about this. I actually wrote corporate a few months ago suggesting that they open one here and they responded that they already planned on opening one appx. on Nov. 22nd. Their food is excellent, their employee benefit packages are incredible. A very family friendly restaurant with super good food. I will be one of the first people in line the day they open (and no, I don't normally do that - I just love this place that much). I grew up in a town in Northern California and would eat Chick-fil-a once a week. When we moved to Bakersfield I was not a happy kid, but figured "Well, at least they have Chick-Fil-A" - months later it closed! Anyway, the food is amazing and I've been on cloud 9 since corporate wrote me back :) posted by

I used to like the food at the Valley Plaza Chick-fil-A, but stopped going there after they starting imposing their religious beliefs on their customers. I didn't mind that they closed their restaurant on Sundays, but I really objected to their corporate office putting their literature on the tables and in the bags of take-out orders asking their customers to boycott movies that they objected to, i.e. "The Last Temptation of Christ." posted by

We ate at Chik-Fil-A at least twice a month for about 5 years in Texas and never once did I see religious literature or flyers about movie boycotts in their stores or bags. Either they toned down since being in the valley plaza or the management for the Bakersfield location had their own agenda. posted by

Hello, well this is certainly an interesting thread. I thought I would leave a comment to introduce myself. My name is Justin and I will be the Owner/Operator of the Chick-fil-A store coming to Bakersfield. My wife and I will be moving to the area in January. I would love to meet each of you who were kind enough to post on this thread. Believe me, I am as excited as most of you are that Chick-fil-A is coming back to Bakersfield. As many of you know the store is going up on the corner and Stockdale and California Ave. We are hoping for a Grand Opening date of March 5. If you have a facebook account, we have a fan page for Chick-fil-A of Bakersfield you can join to follow the construction progress on the store and get updates on specials promotions as we near our Grand Opening. Thanks again for all the feedback and remember:
Sincerely, -justin posted by

While in College I worked at a shopping mall that had a Chick-fil-A. Those sandwiches were delicious. They have really funny commercials too. Eat Mor Chikin! Hey Justin, Do you guys have plans to install solar panels? Bakersfield has lots of sunshine. You could start a trend and be Earth friendly. I don't know of any existing fast food places in town that use solar power. Also does CFA use paper products with a high recycled paper content? The fast food industry is one of the biggest producers of packaging waste in our country. You can read about it here Fast Food Recycling - Progress is Slow on Reducing, Reusing and ... and here Fast Food Waste Threatens our Marine Environment, Drags Down Diversion ... Does the new construction for your building make use of recycled materials?
