IMAX coming to Bakersfield

Bakersfield's options for a Saturday night on the town may soon expand.

Knoxville, Tenn.-based Regal Entertainment Group plans add a digital IMAX theater next year to the Edwards Bakersfield 14 on Ming Avenue near Cal State Bakersfield.

IMAX, in case you haven't been to one, is considered the most complete movie experience going. It gives the viewer a greater sense of immersion with more light and detail on a bigger screen. The sound is better, too.

For years the format was known for science films, but lately blockbusters have been produced with the IMAX system, including Kung Fu Panda and Speed Racer. A Regal marketing manager said the Bakersfield venue will show three-dimensional films as well.

There's an added cost to be paid to get in, though the company hasn't released the amount yet. So our question to you is, how much might you be willing to pay to see an IMAX film once the theater complex opens in about a year or so?

For a typical IMAX film I'd pay upwards of $15 per ticket. If it were in Digital 3D, then I'd pay as much as $20.

About time somebody thought there should be an IMAX. Whether or not I go, depends on the movie. It will have to be a good one if I am going to drive all the from the east side of town to the market place and pay $20 per head.

Actually, this isnm't really IMAX at all.  Real IMAX uses 70mm film; each frame is 10 times the size of normal 35mm.  This is Digital IMAX,. which is TWO 2-K Digital projectors overlapping each other (current digital projection, that is supposed to represent standard 35mm film is only 2K).  THe two overlappin g projectors do NOT increase resolution, only brightness.  Its still only 2K.  True digital IMAX, to match the resolution of the jumbo-sized 70mm frame, would have to be 20K!!!  This is nothing more than exploiting a brand name with a major cut in quality.

You popped my bubble! And to think a  movie theater would deceive me just surprises me. I had no idea corporations would stoop to lying to their customers. Thanks for the tip.

I don't see where the companay lied to anyone.  The article above clearly states that it's Digital IMAX.  Is it a lie when a processor is called a Pentium when there are differrent kinds?

If they had pawned it off as a "real" IMAX I could see the lie but.......?

Actually, Nanc y, they are claiming it is BETTER than regular IMAX because it is Digital.  The IMAX brand name has already been diluted.  With the exception of the new Batman movie (with 20 minutes of true IMAX footage), the Hollywood IMAX movies are actually shot in standard 35mm (or 2K digital) and are "blown up" to IMAX film.  THey digitally remove grain and artificially sharpen edges, but it just doesn't have the impact of true 70mm 15perf production.  Another problem is that film composition and editing styles are different for the two processes, so its hard for the eyes to take in everything on the giant IMAX screen unless they are taken in consideration at the time of production.

If they REALLY wanted to capture IMAX quality, they could use around 8 or 10 2K digital projectors, each covering a different part of the screen.

linfestyp, great explanation on the process. A few years back, well probably more than a few now that I think of it, I had the pleasure of getting a behind-the-scenes tour of the production facilities in Culver City at Sony's studio. This is the famous old MGM studio lot reconverted into a technological wonderland. IMAX technology and conversion to the digital process were key components of Sony's strategy and investment. The rooms with the huge spools and and banks of computers were a marvel, but the 2K digital should not be misrepresented as IMAX quality. Thanks for the cogent and succinct explanation.

I'm not arguing the process since I don't know beans about it,  I just questioned the wording.  I went back and re-read the post and still don't see where they said digital was better than the original.

For the record.  I've never been to an IMAX of any kind so couldn't give an opinion of that.

Nancy out of element and struggling, but had to butt in... out of element ...repeat out of element and butting in...why ? and what do you have to offer? out of element.....did you have a friend who had a neighbor who`s daughter`s girlfriend`s stepdad`s sister dated a film studio props carpenter who knew a real expert`s ex son in law...

I did reread the post and yeah, digital was sneaked in without my notice. The post goes on to describe IMAX as a different viewing experience, using IMAX generically leading you to believe you are not watching something different. I think I'll save my money and rent the video. If Edwards is going to install a digital IMAX rather than an IMAX, they should use the term "digital IMAX."

magzy dear...If you weren't so cute and clever I could get upset with you but no, I just can't.  I questioned the word "lied" not the IMAX stuff.  And you just couldn't resist doing just what you accused me of could you?  You "butted" right in.

I admitted I don't know beans about IMAX and, honestly, much about films at all.  I'm not even a movie goer.  But what I do know about is language.  But then again, why do I need to know much of anything when I have you to follow me around and keep me on the straight and narrow.

You must be one bored looney lonely fella if you have nothing better to do.  Next time you're in town (if you're ever out of it) I'll buy you a cup of coffee so that you're not so needy.

Gonna raise your rent next year, oh lonely one... be ready for the inflation hammer......
