MUSINGS, RANDOM AND OTHERWISE

Speaking in Jerusalem on Thursday, President Bush criticized the appeasement-flavored mindset of those who imagine that the world's worst tyrants can be placated with face-to-face chats. "Some seem to believe we should negotiate with terrorists and radicals," said Bush, "as if some ingenious argument will persuade them they have been wrong all along."

Though Bush didn't mention anyone by name, Democrats decided that his target was Barack Obama. The Obama campaign blasted the president for launching an "unprecedented political attack on foreign soil" -- and insisted that if Obama is elected, "we're not going to sit down and engage Iran, unless or until they give up their nuclear weapons program."

Really? Obama's own website describes him as "the only major candidate who supports tough, direct presidential diplomacy with Iran without preconditions." When Obama was asked during a televised debate last year whether he would agree "to meet separately, without precondition . . . with the leaders of Iran, Syria, Venezuela, Cuba, and North Korea," he promptly answered: "I would."

If Obama has had a change of heart, he should say so. (He should update his website, too.) Complaining of an "unprecedented political attack" when he hasn't even been named, let alone misrepresented, is peevish and pathetic, not presidential.

In 2006, Chicago aldermen voted to prohibit city restaurants from serving foie gras. At the time, Mayor Richard Daley called it "the silliest law the City Council has ever passed." Last week the aldermen came around to Daley's view, and voted overwhelmingly to lift the ban.

There are certainly good reasons to shun foie gras, which is produced by force-feeding ducks and geese through a tube jammed down their throats, making their livers bloat to 10 times the normal size. But in a free society, government attempts to proscribe popular consumer choices are usually improper and ineffective. If I disapprove of foie gras on humanitarian (or other) grounds, I should be making the case against it in the marketplace of ideas -- not lobbying Big Brother to forbid it.

Prohibition doesn't annul demand, and demand generally finds its supply. Liquor didn't vanish under the Volstead Act; it moved underground, into speakeasies and other illegal channels. Foie gras didn't disappear either; Chicago diners have had little difficulty finding "duckeasies" where chefs continued to prepare it. Happily, chefs and diners can come out of the shadows now, and animal-welfare activists can do what they should have been doing all along: Using reason, not force, to achieve their goal.

The Boston Globe recently reported that retirements are suddenly spiking at the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority. Why? Because a new law taking effect in 2009 slightly reduces benefits for workers who retire before age 65. The major change: As of next year, retirees will have to pay 15 percent of their health insurance premium. Current retirees get free healthcare for life. That's in addition to their pensions, of course. MBTA workers can retire with a full pension after just 23 years on the job, at which point they are perfectly free to find another government job and get right back on the public payroll.

Such double-dipping is common in the public sector, as are so many other lucrative perks that government employees take for granted and most private employees can only dream about. "The nation is dividing into two classes of workers: those who have government benefits and those who don't," USA Today noted in 2007. "The gap is accelerating in every way -- pensions, medical benefits, retirement ages." According to the Congressional Research Service, the pension collected by the average private-sector retiree is worth less than half of what a typical government retiree can expect. If you don't have your snout in the government trough, you can expect to work ever-longer hours and pay ever-higher taxes and fees to support those who do.

Those, to mention just a single example, like Michael Mulhern. He is the 40-something former MBTA general manager who "retired" in 2005, began collecting a $130,000 annual pension, then hired on as head of the MBTA retirement fund, a job that pays about $225,000 annually. Mulhern's total take: more than $350,000 a year. He is just one illustration of a huge problem growing more urgent by the day -- the staggering sums that taxpayers are shelling out for the care and feeding of avaricious public employees. In Massachusetts and nationwide, a backlash is coming.

Maybe ol' Barack Hussein Obama should change his middle name to "Some".   He will be no longer burdened with a middle name he and his disciples are ashamed of, and with the new name, he will look a little less schizophrenic accusing people of talking about him.

posted by samheath on May 18, 2008 at 02:33 PM

I assumed Democrats looked at the name Hussein and exclaimed, "Hey; that's really cool!"

posted by anglo1 on May 18, 2008 at 02:51 PM

That is good samheath.  Too much truth there I'm afraid.  Some democrats would be more accurate probably.  I don't think the Clintons think it's too cool right now.

posted by samheath on May 18, 2008 at 02:56 PM

Probably true anglo; but who knows, the Clintons might have thought it cool to start but if they did I'd say their idea of "cool" has altered somewhat.

Petty Democrat puns?  You'd be right there in saying Democrats have been making puns.  Have you been reading these blogs?

Not to worry, if Obama doesn't shoot himself in the foot as he's wont to do, his wife will  be right there with her speeches to help him out.    Proof will be in the pudding in Nov.

You know Nancy about those Repup comments don't be a hater now.. Yea I have been reading the blogs and all you Btown wannab Repubs are on the constant on Hillary and O'Bama.Tell me now, do you really think that the majority of Btown blue collar workers, union paycheck cashing folk here in the famous dustbowl, truly qualify as a quality Republican? NO... Really now you don't get the tax breaks that the Repubs vote for themselves, and just about every family here has at least one family member that needs some part of the good ole' liberal system of which this valley is built on i.e unions, low income daycare, jr college, scholarships etc...... now girly up Nancy it is what it is..... NOT a REPUB affair..

posted by NancyII on May 18, 2008 at 10:53 PM

Sorry jpatto, you're post doesn't make a lot of sense.  Just what is it you're really trying to say?  And just what is a "quality Republican?"

As I frequently remind people....this is not a chat room and people aren't necessarily sitting here with fingers poised over the keyboard just waiting to respond.  It's often an hour, several hours, or a day later before some get back to the blogs to continue a debate.  Some folks even remind us that they have other lives and other chores that keep them from posting an immediate response.

Some even take a little while to form a civil reply and, as you can see, my response preceded your comment.

LOL~ Sam! hey I know my priorities, and foi gras is on my bucket list, for all I know I might hate it.But any really expensive thing you can put too much heat to and it simply disappears into goo,,,well enough about force fed critters, veal anyone?

Would "civility" extend to a free exchange of ideas, even if that means others exposing our errors Sam? A free exchange of ideas, without censorship or revisionism? Anytime you feel like that, you just let me know. Until then, hypocricy, thy name is Sam.

Foie gras didn't disappear either; Chicago diners have had little difficulty finding "duckeasies" where chefs continued to prepare it. JPatto: It took me a few hours to translate your last couple of posts into English.  Sorry for the delay, it took me a while to find the Illiterate to English translator on Google.

If I understand your Ebonics correctly, you think that Bakersfield residents will vote for Obama because they are largely blue collar.  You may be right, but this would be the first time it happened.  If you think that either the conservative working whites or the largely Catholic Mexican-Americans in this area are going to turn out in droves for someone who is percieved as a Muslim, you may be right.  There's always a first time.

Now, I know Google translator is difficult to use, so here's the translation for you:

"Girl, yous straight trippin' if you tink deeze racist BTown foos gonna vote fo a brotha"

posted by randomfactor on May 19, 2008 at 05:32 PM

So your strategy is to lie about Obama's religion, then?

posted by Googolplex on May 19, 2008 at 08:20 PM

I made no statements about his religion.  I just don't see Conservative America voting for anyone who ever prayed to Allah.  Frankly, he's toast on the religion issue either way. Anyone who doesn't read will think he's Muslim.  Anyone who does will know that he's whatever religion that will get him elected.

To answer your question Nancy, I think it speaks for itself, the true conservatives go to ivy league schools, they wouldn't be caught dead or lower themselves attending a jr college, education? ha, private all the way baby..... Like I said Btown bluecollar workers cashing the weekly union checks calling themselves Repubs living the high life in the dustbowl U.S.A. Not to say that I disagree with this lifestyle, not at all.....Came from the top of the hill. Tehachapi..As far as ebonics googoplex, I don't know why you worked your puter so hard, its the typical Kern County education, oh excuse me, I actually have a degree, I guess that puts me above average here in Bako town lol..Religion, I really don't believe that necessary to run the White House as it seems  everyone that has been there qualifies for the "big house" they are nothing but crooks anyway.Speaking of race? I realize one of the biggest problems this county has is racism and chauvanisim....I hope O'Bama kicks butt and puts a woman in vice.......You Go Brutha!!!!!!!Rednecks Rule

posted by NancyII on May 19, 2008 at 09:20 PM

Well lets see.  You have what kind of degree and you got it where?    Bakersfield?  True conservatives only go to Ivy League college?  That will come as a surprise to the many conservatives I know.  You've spent two comments denigrating Bakersfield residents and for the life of me I can't understand why.  No one forces anyone to live here so why insult the city you (and others) choose to call home?

If you want to talk politics that's fine, you have a right to be in whatever party you want to be, but to insult an entire city because YOU are a liberal is silly.

I have several sayings I'm fond of and one is that "Education doesn't make you smart, it just makes you educated."  Life makes people smart, that is if they're willing to learn from it.  Arrogance doesn't make anyone smart either, nor does it make one sound smart.  It just makes them sound arrogant. And I quote "I actually have a degree, I guess that puts me above average here in Bako town "

It's really too bad your "degree" didn't teach you grammar, punctuation, and structure, your posts might be more understandable.  Sigh..I guess we can't have everything.  In any case, you just go right on mocking...maybe one day someone will take you seriously.

You have a good night now, ya hear?

I am proud to say I did get my degree as yes, a welfare mom.Thank you very much for all your taxes. Went on to make killer bucks at the top of the state as you know. Now happily retired at fifty yes 50 still making killer bucks on my liberal degree, thank you very much. I don't recall getting personal with you, yours, nor anyone on this blog. I was simply stating a fact. Republicans are born and bred for Wealth the laws are created for money. It is what it is. I didn't speak of the entire city or maybe I did. We are all a bunch of rednecks here and if one attempts to deny it they are just that.....In denial. Your remarks about my grammer, education, and the other remarks that weren't very nice was simply an attempt I believe,as self defense because of famial pride and typical bloodline I won't say arrogance because your not ,just plain hard headed refusal to say, you may have a rightous point jpatto....Btown is what I said above mostly vocational workers, hard workers. There are good people here.Unfortunately many forgot or don't realize who made laws like, FMLA, unions, and why they get alot of the good things they get. Not all the hand outs are bad, you have to agree with that. I'm quite sure that your conservativ'e grandson is enjoying his FMLA. Oh by the way Congrats.. Googlplex I hope, I didn;t offend you, it certainly wasn't intented as a "negative nancy" seen thats the name for a boo boos... lol. Maybe my computer will learn english and grammer better when I post as much as you Nancy..Peace out

posted by NancyII on May 20, 2008 at 12:21 PM

1.   I learned grammar and typing in school, not on a blog.

2.  Using "BTown" certainly is speaking to the whole city.

2.  Familial pride and Typical bloodline?  And that means what?

3.  It's not hard headed refusal to say you're wrong.  Or maybe you're misguided.

4.  And how is it you're able to retire at pre-50?

5.  As for getting personal with me, or mine, either you have a short memory or maybe YOU'RE in denial.  You come here and insult the city, call everyone rednecks in an offensive way and you expect no comment on it?  You don't call THIS arrogant. "I guess that puts me above average here in Bako town lol"

Sorry, your folksy way of insulting people so it looks like you're one of "the good old gals" is pretty transparent.  And this isn't the first time.  If you have something to say, come right out and say it..no need to dance around it.

posted by jpatto on May 20, 2008 at 04:44 PM

Like I said grasping for low blows Nancy, no Im not misguided, looking at the ground rules the two bullets have no rules regarding form and sentance structure, again Im sorry if I dont please you and your grammer policing ways.....I failed to read the blog that announced that you recieved the promotion of being put in charge of Bako.com..Hmmmm I just tried bloging on O'bama being the right man for the job with a little spin on it and to your dismay  end up getting told how stupid you have always thought I was. Thats OK with me. I dont have to explain to you why I can retire pre-50 I really dont belive I owe you an explantion all I can tell you is that I love every minute of it. Now if you would like to discuss off topic with me, and go to something we both know about a tip for a tap how about you starting a new blog on the subject of adultry. Does that sound familiar? Litterally lol

posted by Googolplex on May 20, 2008 at 08:12 PM

Oh, good.  JPatto's comments have finally run the full course of the true illiterate mindset:  From rambling, incoherent, political rantings to nonsensical personal jabs that no one else understands or cares about.

If I can try to bring some order to that chaos of this inane argument, let me see if I can boil this down.  You were a welfare mom, educated by the state, employed by the state for "BIG BUCKS", rose "to the top" (Governor?), and have now retired on said tax dollars.  At any rate, you are obviously the product of social programs and we would not expect you to argue against them.

posted by motopoet on May 20, 2008 at 08:19 PM

To all reading this..Joan is talking about ME where the adultry is concerned and I am guilty of that. Even as my former sister in law, I didn't think that she was low enough to make a statement like that in this forum..Oh,,who am I kidding..Of course I did! There is no possible way she is referring to my Mom (NancyII)as she has been single since 1986..LONG before J knew anything about her other than who she was(one of the misfortunes of a small town)and I dont know how J would know anything about it either unless she too has engaged in the act, which is something I would know nothing about. As to her politcal ravings, J..You are obviously as uninformed now as you were when we were on speaking terms. You made no sense then and that has not changed.

I wasn't aware that Nurses ran prisons.

It is impossible for the folks here to understand the myriad reasons for the tensions so apparent in this post and there is no reason you should, but go back through everyone elses posts and see if J has posted anywhere else. She knows exactly what she is doing and why she is doing it...I saw that Mom posted a few of her favorite old sayings...well..Here are a couple of mine.."Misery Loves Company" and "It is better to keep your mouth shut and let people think you a fool than to open it and remove all doubt".

OH yeah..It's Tit for Tat, not tip for tap and literally only has ONE "t"....geez...

posted by jpatto on May 20, 2008 at 09:08 PM

No moto I was not talking about you, does guilt raise its ugly head? How you forget that you were reared in that sneaky little place called Golden Hills rent horse stable, and what all went on there ....lol...stable hands came and went there nameless too huh? Now if I were to have mentioned cyber sex  I could understand you chiming in, oh thats right you did commit adultry and sister in law? Not me! You know you never had any use for us,don't bother claiming us now....I can only hope that one day when you do grow up you are able out grow the racism that you deeply hide while riding the skirttails of the rest of my precious family anda that you can be the somebody you want so badyly to be. Until then Give up the fake smiles, Keep up the know it all attitude. And if I want it to be tip for tap it will be be that way when I write you do not dictate to me. Maybe you think your pure but many know different.Don't even come on here doggin me out Mark. You don't want to make that mistake again let this be a freebie.

posted by NancyII on May 20, 2008 at 10:40 PM

Is that a threat to Mark Joan?  "You don't want to make that mistake again let this be  a freebie??    Are you going to beat himup?  I doubt that since you'd have to use that phony bad shoulder/elbow/arm that got you a disability check   Retirement indeed.  Retirement is when people have worked for their retirement, not when they scammed their way into it.

You're very good with the innuendos but lousy with facts.  Facts you know nothing about.  Let this be a warning to YOU.  I will delete any further comments from you on this blog.  If you want to make libelous comments about people, do it on your own blog.  Just remember the glass house thing.  And look to your own past before concerning youself with others.  I never brought up anything personal, I brought up your inability to string together a literate post...you're the one who made it personal which has no place on this blog.

I asked you questions you refused to answer and you continued to post drivel.  My comments about your ramblings and poor grammar might have been out of line if you had made any sense at all, or attempted to explain what you meant in plain English.  But no, you continued to try to be cryptic.

Find someone else to harrass Joan, and try to find someone who doesn't have your number.  You're outclassed here.

(By the way, this entire blog has been copied and stored.)

posted by NancyII on May 20, 2008 at 10:49 PM

One more thing.  How DARE you accuse Mark of riding anyones skirttails and deep seated racism where the boy is concerned when YOU'RE the one who tries to convince everyone what sacrifices you made.  You talked, Mark DID for him.   I didn't see YOU giving him riding equipment, taking him to races, giving him pointers on bikes.   You should be ashamed of some of the things you've said to him (new car ring a bell?).

Your precious family.  The one you did your damndest to destroy through your selfishness and interference.

Lord Nancy

What a load of anger jpatto is carrying around.

It's really low of her to unload her personal vendettas on a public forum.  Take heart.  Anyone who knows you or Mark will give her rants the attention they deserve.  To tell the truth it sounds like it was written by a drunk.

Since this was written in a public forum she needs to keep in mind the laws regarding slander.

This woman's a nurse?  Lord save us all.

Thanks Audrey, I appreciate the support.  You know the old saying "You can choose your friends but not your family."  Not even inlaws.   Sometimes you just inherit the losers.  By the way, in spite of the "rising to the top" comment, she's an LVN not an RN so I don't know where top is.  If she charted the way she writes here, you're right, Lord help those patients in prison.

The sad thing is, her sister (legally still my daughter in law) is one of the most wonderful people I know.  Our whole family loves her dearly and it's hard to imagine two people so very different.

Seriously, I don't personally know anybody on these blogs, but I will say that in my "conversations" with Audrey, Nancy, and Moto, even though I often disagree, I've always been treated respectfully, and like all three of them, based simply on our online conversations.

This Joan individual obviously has some major issues!

You were told ahead of time that any further comments from you would be deleted.  That's hardly the cowards way out, I was up front about it.

As I told you before, if you want to continue your immature BS then do it on your own blog where you can only be deleted  by Jason.

Continue to make a fool of yourself if you wish but you'll still be deleted every time I see one of your posts on this one.

You're still done here.

By the way, I wouldn't expect to see any other response from you but to use the "coward' defense.  You should know all about that since you've never had the guts to say any of this to anyones face.

And you're STILL done here.
