Computer problems
Anyone have any idea why, now that I had to reinstall Vista, that every time I try to copy and paste Windows shuts down and restarts? All my keystrokes and features are ginched up but the sutting down thing is a PAIN! 14 comments from 7 users

This is the most frustating experience I have ever had with a computer. At first I couldn't even get on line..then figured that one out. Now I can't use the router with it because it's saying I need an internet adaptor so my portable laptop is chained to the desk. A shadowy window keeps coming up telling me I have low disk space on my recovery disk and to empty the trash bin..which has nothing in it. When I click on the files in the recovery disk area, it ways they are all empty. My touch pad won't scroll either. Now I can't copy and paste without Windows shutting down. I'm pulling my hair out. I HATE COMPUTERS!. I want my old desktop back..it was sooo easy to use. Well, it was til it died. posted by

I can't believe they call these blasted things "user friendly." Talk about a joke! Anyone know how to single space on the blog? I tried pasting the poetry but it shuts down, I tried typing but everything is double spaced. I'm getting an Exedrin headache and it's about number 987. I'm about to go do what I should have been doing all morning. .....writing up listings so I don't starve. posted by

Do you use an after market keyboard like Logitech or something that maybe takes a different driver? Very hard to diagnose without being there. Once you re-installed your OS did you go do updates from Microsoft? posted by

This is a laptop and I'm using the touch pad. I use ctr c and v but I enven went back and tried copy from edit and then the feature here on the blog to paste from windows. All had the same result. I had a lockup and had to reinstall Vista and I agree..it's junk. I was able to get MagicJack to work but had to drop the firewall for incoming calls. There just ain't no justice. posted by

I've heard so many bad things about MagicJack and taking up all your resources. Were you having the same problem before you installed the MagicJack device? I'm not sure what is happening but you can hit crtl alt del and go to task manager and click on processes and see what is using so much of your CPU and applications to see what all is running. just an idea. See if something is hogging your cpu usage. posted by

I've not used Vista but if you have a control panel you can go in and setup your keyboard and type a few letters and see if it is working. Should have an icon of a keyboard. posted by

The keyboard is working..lol..I'm using it. It's just limited compared to what it was befroe the reinstall. The computer locked up on an automatic update from Microsoft and was in a loop. I googled the problem and found it's a lot more common than we'd like to think. In the end, I was able to salvage my pictures (which were about the only things on the laptop) and had to reinstall Vista from scratch. The only thing I can't figure how to do is make it copy and paste without shutting down and find the wireless adaptor that goes with this computer. posted by

RE MajigJack..I looked at all the pros and cons and my family is using it back in TN..they swear by it. I mainly use it because I'm on a family members plan on my cell and I don't like to run up their minutes on frivilous calls. It's worked well for me with long distance too. posted by

I had nothing but problems with Vista plus it was a power hog. Installed the new Windows 7. It's really an improvement. Everything runs faster. posted by

Somewhat like a maid might say, "I don't do Windows", heh. Actually, I have avoided Vista intentionally. It's just too buggy for my likings. This sort of behavior suggests a corrupted install or driver conflict though. I would recommend going back to XP or going forwards to Windows 7. Actually, I'd really recommend ditching Windows entirely and going with Linux, but I understand that might be more of a learning curve than Nancy wants. My only Windows "machines" these days live in virtual machines so if they misbehave, I can restore them from pristine backups.
