Score One For Ann Barnett
On July 3, TBC ran an article regarding Ann Barnett, Kern County Auditor-Controller in which it was pointed out that she stated that by ending civil marriage ceremonies, the county would save $18,000. Later, it was determined by Ron Errea, CAO for the BoS, that figure was more like $171. Regardless of where you stand on the issue of same-sex marriage, that's a whopping error of $17,829. Ann Barnett took the heat for her personal stand as well as that "error." In today's paper, on page B3 - the continuation of "Supervisors hash out budget plan" article - it states that Ann Barnett "discovered" an additional $3.2 million that had been "accidentally counted as an expense twice" in the budget. This information brings a few questions to mind: This year is unquestionably a lean one for the county budget and by necessity supervisors, the CAO, and the County Auditor-controller are going over it with a finetooth comb. But what of the years fat with taxpayer dollars? Any "accidental" double expenses sneak through then? Who made the error? $3,2 million is not cookie jar cash. Shouldn't that person be reprmanded and encouraged to enroll in one of the new Algebra classes being mandated by the State School Board for all eighth grade students? And finally. Is anyone going to congratulate Ann Barnett for discovering the error? Seems like regardless of her personal beliefs, she did save the BoS from making some very difficult cuts. 37 comments from 16 users

Is anyone going to congratulate Ann Barnett for discovering the error? I hate to do it, but I must give credit where credit is due. Congratulations!

Is anyone going to congratulate Ann Barnett for discovering the error? It depends. Was the error found in her department?

I don't think somebody really needs to be congratulated for doing their job. She is the auditor-controller. This is the same mentality of tipping people at service counters. Mr. Incredible had it right: "When are we going to stop rewarding mediocrity?". posted by

Congratulate her for spending more time talking to lawyers about how she can avoid portions of her elected duties than actually doing her job? I'm sorry, but Barnett has already cost the county too much money.
Step Down Ann Barnett, and let someone better suited for the job do it. posted by

Actually, we ignore mediocrity; we reward incompetency. How else can anyone reconcile the fact that Radio One CEO, Liggins was given a 70 percent raise ($980,000 annual base salary) AND a 5.8 million bonus for LEADING the company to a $387.1 million loss last year? Perhaps I should not have used the word "congratulate." But I do think that if people are not at least recognized for doing a good job, they will eventually say, "What the hay?" and settle for doing a mediocre one. posted by

No, Ann, don't do it. Don't give in to peer, oops, I mean ProgressivePete pressure. You've done nothing wrong. You were crucified for 3 consecutive days on the front page of the Bakersfield Californian. Now, if that weren't punishment enough, they want you to lose your job. posted by

Well, we all fantasize about honest politicians Doc. Regardless of her job performance, or her personal beliefs, she ended civil marriages here not because of budgets, but because of her personal religious beliefs. I'd have more respect for her if she just yelled to the masses, "I'm not gonna marry gays!" posted by

Like that wouldn't have been a law suit in the makings..she had to show diplomacy while achieving her means to and end..still don't see the big issue except people just like to B**ch and whine.. If me or mine ever went to the court house to get married it sure would show that marriage was on rocky ground from the start so why even do it?? A friends backyard ..a park or on a sandy beach would be better than that..complain complain thats all it is.,.. posted by

It would quite *PROPERLY* have spawned a lawsuit. In order to advance bigotry without paying a personal price for it, she decided to inconvenience both gays and straights alike. I swear, so many Christianist folks want to be martyrs but don't want to feel the arrows personally. posted by

BLT, do you know about her authorizing the purchase of $5 million dollars worth of uncertified voting machines that are now useless (not that they weren't useless before). She's done plenty wrong, and has cost the county millions. I understand as a fellow Christian, you feel obligated to stand up for her, but her poor job performance goes way beyond gay marriage. I am a little surprised that you would defend someone that is clearly lying. posted by

Field Poll, Prop 8 (the Hate Amendment) going down 51-42 at the moment. http://field.com/fieldpollo... Oddly enough, Catholics seem less bigoted on the issue than Protestants. Even the Central Valley is only polling 5-4 in favor of hate.

Yeah, it's kinda odd that her religion forbids her from performing marriage ceremonies but it's okay to lie about the reasons why she won't do marriage ceremonies anymore. posted by

Probably true Sioux, but it's still a lie. I don't see it as that big of an issue either, there are plenty of ways to get married. Unfortunately, even if you consider gay marriage as dirty water, she threw the baby out with it. posted by

I wonder what the people who attend her church have to say about having to drive to Tulare to get a marriage license. It was 30 bucks in Bakersfield. Hell, the gasoline expense alone for driving to Tulare would be in the neighborhood of an extra 8 to 10 bucks for the two gallons of gas needed for the trip, not to mention the wear and tear on the vehicle, and not to mention having to take off work to go if Tulare's county office is closed after 5:00 pm and not open on the weekend. She's doing Kern County a favor? In 10 years when Kern County is part of the LA metro, there will be 200K people in Bakersfield alone. If you compare Bakesfield's growth with say, Fresno, which is a good comparison, you're looking at half a million people inside of 50 years. We can't just plan for today. We have to plan for the future of our children. This interruption of civil marriage services is like turning over the county to a Luddite who doesn't expect or want change. posted by

You know, Ron, you raise a valid point. By eliminating all civil ceremonies, Barnett is forcing those of us with no need of any god to visit a minister (or a judge, if you can find one) in order to be married. Wonder if there's a discrimination lawsuit in that... posted by

Boy! It was only like yesterday that Bakersfield, proper, was about 100.000. Must be the water. Found this: Estimated population in July 2006: 308,392. That was about the population of Fresno when I moved there in 1979. Now it's pushing 600K. [Edit] As of 2008, Fresno has an estimated population of 501,525 posted by

Who IS making that claim? The thing about English is that when you look in the dictionary, you notice that for most words, it gives different definitions based on what is called the "sense" of the word. Another way of understanding "sense" is to instead use the concept of "context" of a word. So, since no one but you is referring to homosexuals in that old and hurtful "sense" of the "Q-word" except for you, what can you expect us to think of the sense of that word? Do you mean it in the sense of "odd"? Apparently not. Especially when you then direct comments toward the ONE homosexual participating in this discussion in the form of: H/M: I have let you slide because you dont seem to be the pushy type You are more the womenly type Peter has a verse for you seeing you have claimed to be a christian in your life Like Dogs they return to their Vomit In the Words of God You are deceived you are Blinded I have read your post and I feel sorry for you @ a point in your life you made the decision to turn from God you held off for years about being Gay but you gave in On this net you sound so easy going and understanding you have come in as a Angel of Light but have Satan the false Angel of Light behind you
You are using it in the sense of a noun, not as an adjective. It's a deliberate slur, Sir. You intend to always maintain at least a suggestion of negativity about homosexuals when you speak of them. By doing so, you just divert the whole discussion into something completely unrelated to the context it had when it began. Using the most modest amount of respect, you could avoid that. posted by

Ann Barnett continues to show she is a woman with principle. Great going, Ann. Should she choose to run, she will be re-elected overwhelmingly. Maybe the Homosexual/lesbian/transgender/questionable/pedop hile/bestial/liberal/progressive/Californian editorial page lobby can field a gayley cross dressed opponent for her in the next election. Then you can see just how wonderfully backward our county can be. posted by

drilnlift - what Ann Barnett lacks in respect for the office she holds, she makes up for in experience and understanding of her position itself. I would not make a good candidate for her job, but I'll most definitely be supporting someone who does have both the experience and the character needed to fill such an office. posted by
