Best of Craigslist Choice Questioning Christianity
I PULLED THIS OFF OF CRAIGSLIST "BEST OF" LIST. I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE INTERESTING TO SEE WHAT KIND OF DEBATE THIS STIRS UP. IT EVEN HAS A REFERENCE TO RANDOMFACTOR IN IT...COULDN'T RESIST. BUT, BE SURE TO READ IT AT LEAST TWICE SO YOU DON'T MISS ANYTHING..I HAD TO.
In the following argument of nine premises, I will aim to convince you that Jesus of Nazareth was a fictional character, and not a real person. I do not intend to sway the beliefs of many of you, nor even budge them - I know this to be an impossibility, for if the religious mind is well-trained at anything, it is circumventing rational argument. I only intend to sow seeds of doubt, in the hopes that perhaps some of you will nurture them and let them grow. Here goes. 10 comments from 6 users

Popeye..that's why it's called "FAITH". I don't need concrete proof of Christ's existence, I simply believe in Him. I feel it in my heart rather than in my head. The list is a compelling argument, but only one of thousands over the centuries. It doesn't even upset me to read that stuff because it's someone else's opinion and they are entitled to that. As Mister Jordan said in "Heaven Can Wait", "The likelihood of someone being right rises in proprtion to the number of those trying to prove him wrong" posted by

guess we will find out in the end who is correct. Either way living a Christian life is a good way to live so true or not I am all good with it. If Christians know their bible we are also admonished to be gentle with nonbelievers so they will understand and come to know the way of the Lord, so hopefully you will not get much heated debate here, especially since we know the source of your argument. Have a blessed day!!! posted by

"If Christians know their bible we are also admonished to be gentle with nonbelievers so they will understand and come to know the way of the Lord" Girlsmom, that is a really good comment; all of it is good, but especially the part that I copied above. As my profile and posting history indicates, I am not a follower of the Christian faith. Yet never will I mock it or talk about it (or any spiritual path) in a negative light. Unfortunately many do mock it, but with all sincerity I tend to be understanding of that, too. While there are a few genuine mockers of anything spiritual out there (I get my rotten tomatoes, too), most people who mock it do so in reaction to the unchristian, very unspiritual behavior of some who claim the Christian faith, whether in reaction to those who use the faith as a pass to act superior and think they are "better" than others, or those who turn the faith as a weapon of aggression against those (like me) who choose not to adopt it. As I often comment when religious insult wars start brewing: (~Walk your spiritual path in a way that brings it honor and not reproach~) That is a requirement if anyone expects to a truly effective representative of his or her faith. If your behavior closes doors and burns bridges, you are doing your faith the greatest possible disservice.

The first two-thirds of the documentary "The God Who Wasn't There" is like this, and very, very good. The director loses his way storywise in the last third of the movie but by then he's already made his point--the vast majority of Christians don't know the history of their own church, and if they did, they'd recognize the hatchet job Saul of Tarsus did on it. The *BIGGEST* problem with Christianity is that the Old and New Testaments should never be taken together--it's like mixing booze and sleeping pills. OT alone, you have Judaism and upright behavior. NT alone, you have Christianity and (mostly) upright behavior. Combined, you have a schizophrenic mishmash that's harmful to society. posted by

If Christians know their bible ...they typically become atheists. It's the second-leading cause, after Roman Catholicism. posted by

Your arguments of "nine premises" are exactly that. Premises. As I understand the word, a premise is a beforehand statement or assertion, which is not necessarily accurate or true. Abstract terms like "bronze-age ethics" are subject to interpretation. How that interpretation is applied in the world today seems to be the contention, rather than where it came from. Interesting essay. posted by

I work by myself so I have lots of time to think while I listen to the radio. The thing that I always wondered about with those folks who say Christianity is just a myth, fairy tale, whatever, is why it is they are so threatened by us. No one spends time trying to denounce unicorns or leprechauns or Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny or you fill in the blank. Yes there are the wackos who do bad stuff in the name of Christianity, but you'll find that in every organized group, but most of the mainstream Christians go around feeding the poor, building houses for those unfortunate people in Mexico living in a cardboard box, supporting and helping those starving in Africa, helping the kids here in Bakersfield, I work in just such a program, paint and repair an elderly persons home, feeding the homeless, etc etc. We mostly just want people to function as well as they are able and give them a hand with things they are not able to do. So what if we believe in some higher power? Is that really going to mess up your scientific findings? I don't spend my time bad mouthing atheists or agnostics or any other religion for that matter. You go do your thing and we will continue doing ours and everyone is happy. Everything will work out in the end. End of story. Random-I am not an atheist and I know my bible. posted by

Father Kenneth at the Catholic high school I attended said believing in evolution is just fine. Believing in God means you believe he breathed a soul into the first man, separating man from the animals. Science and faith can easily co-exist. It is true that outside of The Bible, there is little documentary evidence of many things in the New Testament. That doesn't mean I still don't believe in what I read there. We'll see whose right after death — Christians or Craigslist. Well, technically only if the Christians are right, which is unlikely. I'm betting on Craigslist. They have a better search engine. . Random-I am not an atheist and I know my bible Gonna go ahead and doubt that. The thing *I* wonder about is why your faith is so bothered by people pointing out that, technically, it *IS* based on mythology. As to why *WE* are threatened, we've seen what happens your you religious types seize control, and it ain't pretty. posted by

I am not threatened or bothered by you Random or anyone else for that matter. You are free to say or believe whatever you like, has absolutely no affect on me. That is the beauty of God, he gave us free choice.
