I think it is time to seriously look at doing something for Kevin Harvick in our city, I know he is technically from Oildale but that is Bakersfield as well.... Mayor Hall let's get it done!

Hell no.  He 'visits' Bakersfield.  He was approached about 5 years ago to come talk to some of the kids in Beardsley District - the individuals making contact with Harvick stated "he doesn't have time to do that!!"

Undeserved, if you ask me.  Small town boy does NOT do good!!

Ariz, I did forget Tony Waters, BTW that is my cousin and he is without a doubt the purest drag racing legend out there.

Roger was a better driver than Rick but they both didn`t have the talent of the locals they raced against, Bradshaw,Brown,Mayfield,Earnshaw brothers,Tannahill,Sullivan...but they moved up to the big time...good for them

Gube, I kept picking Harvick for my Race to Victory team; he kept finishing out of the top ten. I actually picked Jeff Gordon - barf - as one of my two top picks for Sonoma (Tony is the other). It's painful - like cheering for the Dodgers - but that damn 24 is good on road courses.

Tis OK Gube, you aren't the only one.

JBS Harvick just beat the old record of no DNF's. That's 57 races in a row that he finished........Oh by the way the record he beat was his own.............Harvick doesn't tear his cars up...............JBS get the facts straight before you spout off......

I have my facts straight, Gube. I said nothing about DNFs; I mentioned smashing his car up. How many of his "finishes" have been 130 laps down with all of the sheet metal stripped from the front of the car? Too many.

I was the gardener for the Mears family~ one of the brothers I think?~ anyway they paid in advance! I loved them~nice folks, they would even let us use their bathroom...but give a stretch of highway to them like Nancy suggests and leave the streets alone.

You think he was a drunk Gube, you shouda gotta load of his ex wife!

posted by gube on Jun 20, 2008 at 11:55 AM

antiexremism I never said Harvick should have a street named after him.........................All I am saying is what Hornish and Montoya  has said several times ........''these cars are harder to drive''...........

Oh and Rick Mears was also a drunk like Merle and buck so yes he should have a street named after him to.

Gube-- i enjoyed it a lot... i was referring to a "real track" by a track with both left and right hand turns.

Also, i did mention that all F1, Indy and Nascar drivers have talent, I wasnt dissing anyone i promise.

PureAmerican- Casey is really cool, my ex-step dad used to sit n drink beers together, that was years ago though..

Indy cars have lost my interest since the CART/IRL split. I lived in SoCal in the late 70's-early 80's and saw quite a few Indy races at the old OMS. Saw Rick Mears in the #4 Penske and the #1 Penske in back-to-back years. Indy was king back then

NASCAR has grown in popularity at least a hundred fold since then. I remember seeing and hearing a NASCAR car at the PX at Camp Pendelton back in 1983 and thinking it was the loudest thing I'd ever been around. Don't remember the car # or the driver, just that it was loud.

I must admit I get bored with all car races. Just when they get going good someone bumps someone else, sending them into the wall, bringing out a yellow flag. Ho-hum...

Open wheel racing ( F-1 ) and Nascar are two different types of racing...one you can get killed faster than your can blink your eye...the other-with the newer and safer car-you can't kill yourself even if you tried...I think Montoya knows this...as for naming streets after these guys---how about naming streets after those that swore the oath, and died for you and me...our own men and women from Kern County....instead of some millionaire's

I'm not out to "Dis on Harv",  but I have to agree with gsisola on one point.  Joey Porter is in Bakersfield allot.  I've seen him at  local middle school and jr high track meets and he signs autographs for any kid who asks.  He holds a football camp for the kids in town.  He's at fundraisers.  The man does a lot for the community, and he's very low key about it.  He doesn't seem to be doing it for the publicity.  He's doing it for the love of his home town.

posted by PureAmerican on Jun 20, 2008 at 10:34 AM

Tiff - I agree with Gube Indy or F1 can't really compare, Nascar is superior and if you can win in Cup then you truly have accomplished something. Those other series are good but if you take a look a Juan Montoya who was a champ in Indy Car and won 8 races in F1 hasn't done much in Cup....

Nascar is superior

posted by antiextremism on Jun 20, 2008 at 10:29 AM

Well Gube, using that logic, do you think the 7 guys that beat Harvick last night should have streets named after them.

True Indy and Nascar are 2 differnt animals, so a better analogy might be comparing Erick Aybarr, shortstop for the Dodgers and a .251 hitter, and Michael Jordan.

If Harvick can win 4 Daytona 500s and have the record for most pole positions, THEN you can mention them in the same breath.

posted by PureAmerican on Jun 20, 2008 at 10:24 AM

Tiff - Casey actually grew up on Sorrel St over off of McKee near Punkin Center, Casey is a real cool cat. I have a good friend that grew up with him and had the opportunity to spend some time talking with him. Casey has talent and equipment but just can't get the two working together. Kevin has a great deal more talent but I am proud that both are from here and both represent Bakersfield very well.

posted by gube on Jun 20, 2008 at 10:16 AM

tiff what is a real track?

posted by gube on Jun 20, 2008 at 10:13 AM

Tiff watching the lack of success of all the Indy 500 winners and greats from Indy and F1 struggle in Nascar is ''HOW''

Both do take talent but I think Nascar takes more..............The cars of Nascar are harder to drive then a Indy car. Watch Nascar and you will hear former Indy and F1 drivers say so.....

Tiff how did you do as a race car driver........I bet you had a blast

posted by Tiffanilynn on Jun 20, 2008 at 09:56 AM

Gube- how is making a bunch of left hand turns harder then indy or F1?? I used to help teach the "race car" class at mesa marin, and was the driver for my high school race team, id have to say, driving a car in a bunch of left hand turns didnt seem that hard at 80-100-ish (nascar is much faster i know). Uncle used to race out there too. I believe it takes talent to do 150-200 in a F1 car around a real track then do a bunch of left turns. But may i add, both take talent.

posted by gube on Jun 20, 2008 at 09:26 AM

antiextremisn you can not compare Rick Mears to Kevin Harvick...............Indy and Nascar is two totally different types of racing. Rick Mears was a great Indy racer. Mears most likely wouldn't have had much success in Nascar because Indy cars are much easy-er to drive the Nascars. Look at all these Indy and F1 drivers that had great success then come to Nascar only to struggle. Nascar drivers are more talented the Indy or F1...............

posted by antiextremism on Jun 20, 2008 at 08:49 AM

If any Bakersfieldian racer gets one, it is Rick Mears. Comparing Harvick to Mears is like comparing Sasha Vujacic to Michael Jordan.

posted by gube on Jun 20, 2008 at 08:48 AM

Casey Mears sucks..............What has he ever done for Bakersfield???? nothing.

JBS ...when it comes to having a penchant for smashing up his race car............Casey Mears is your man......

posted by Tiffanilynn on Jun 20, 2008 at 08:31 AM

Casey Mears is from Bakersfield as well, Rosedale to be exact. For those that dont know, he is a nascar driver as well.

They should do what they do around Nashville.  Name a section after famous people.  31E has places that are Loretta Lynn Way etc but they don't change the actual name of the highway.

Johnny Callison, Rick Mears, Stephen Neal,Jerry Quarry, Joey Porter, Bruce Sarver, Louis Wright, Nikki Blue, Jeff Buckey, David Carr, Brandon Cruz, Chris Childs, Dalene Kurtis, Jeff Siemon, Jack Johnson, Vernon Burke... man we need more streets !!!!

A little help from Wikipedia.

I like Harvick, but he seems to have this penchant for smashing up his race car. It's kinda hard to win when you're driving a red and yellow accordionmobile...

Whay y'all got dis on Harv....... The man keeps coming back to help this community, that little street in Rosedale I guess is a start but I like Chester Ave. Dude if KORN got a street Kevin should get 99 from Taft Hwy to 7th Standard!!!!!  He is still one of the badest mo fo's in Nascar baby!!! ya gotta luv the man!

posted by johnburnssucks on Jun 19, 2008 at 10:17 PM

He hasn't won in about 50 races. It was fun when he won the Daytona 500 last year, but what has he done lately?

posted by NancyII on Jun 19, 2008 at 09:55 PM

Does this mean Chester is safe for now?

posted by dgrealish on Jun 19, 2008 at 09:50 PM

There is a residential street named for him in Rosedale.

posted by NancyII on Jun 19, 2008 at 09:49 PM

Well, there goes Chester Avenue.  RIP.

posted by maybelline on Jun 19, 2008 at 09:45 PM

Good God!  Stop the madness.  Leave the street names alone for crying out loud.  By the way,  Oildale is not Bakersfield.  Ask anyone in Oildale.
