Valentines Day, a day of love, generosity, giving and intimacy, has been celebrated on the feast day of St. Valentine as early as the third century. The holiday is associated with giving "valentines" and the infamous little angle with the bow and arrow we all know as cupid. Unfortunately, Jesus is not closely associated with the holiday although he is the reason for the holiday. There was some recent work done in King Solomon's tomb, and a scripture was found underneath it revealing an alternate story for the persecution of Jesus Christ.
And the story goes…
…After Jesus comes out of the wilderness where he was tested by Satin for 40 days and 40 nights without food or water he was believed accumulate followers fast. His early ministry earned him some of his first followers, Simon, Peter, Andrew, James, and John. Jesus began to preach all over Galilee and gave one of his most famous sermons famously called 'Sermon on the Mount,' which emphasized humility, obedience, love of one's neighbor, the proper method of prayer, and trust in God. This sermon impressed his increasing group of followers and was earning him more as he traveled.
During his travels he performed miracles, ones I have no intention on getting into, calmed storms and exorcized demons. Jesus also appointed his twelve disciples at this time. Jesus had many followers, but just as many people opposed him for being associated with sinners, tax collectors and prostitutes.
When Jesus got back to his hometown in Nazareth, which was early February, he met a woman named Claudia Procula whom he thought was extremely beautiful. They spent a lot of time together. Jesus eventually lost his virginity to this woman in the Gethsemane Garden two weeks later and was seen by Caiaphas, the high priest at the time. Claudia Procula was the wife of Pontius Pilate, the presiding King.
Word spread through all of the high ranking officials who eventually plotted against the son of God. Matthew 26:3-4 says "Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled in the place of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas, and they plotted to arrest Jesus in some sly way and kill him."
After the last meal, Jesus went back to the Gethsemane Garden to prey, and met with Claudia again when his disciples fell asleep for the third time. When she left Judas came in with a large crowd of men sent with swords and clubs sent by Caiaphas and arrested Jesus.
Jesus was eventually convicted of blasphemy and crucified, but this was not the reason for his arrest. They finally got him for having an intimate relationship with the king's wife. They did not want to arrest him for something that happened two months earlier to prevent riots within the people, and no one would believe it, so they tried to make up false evidence against him.
Matthew 26:59-61 says "The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death… Finally two (false witnesses) came forward and declared, 'this fellow said, 'I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.''"
He was then convicted of blasphemy when he admitted to being the son of God. He was sent to Pontius Pilate who had the authority to let him go or crucify him. Jesus was crucified by the husband of the woman he lost his virginity too at the second week of February.
St. Valentine, a man who knew the actual story, set his feast day on Feb. 14 to commemorate the day the son of God had his first intimate relationship with the woman he loved. St. Valentine was known for the gifts he gave out of love and now people recognize that as the reason for the holiday, but most Christians know Jesus is the reason for everything.
