I can't believe they pay me for this!
One day I was a writer, the next day I was the editor of the nation's No. 1 community journalism project--The Northwest Voice and The Southwest Voice newspapers. Writing has always been my passion, and I had contributed upwards of 60 submissions before I became editor. Now, I'm basking in my good fortune and loving every minute of creating what I believe are masterpieces of unpracticed, non-professional, straight-from-the-heart journalism.

A blog about Family & Home, Neighborhoods, and Northwest.

Coffee ... and dogs

As you may be aware, there is a dog & cat over-population crisis in Kern County.

To help, The Northwest Voice is partnering with NOR, San Joaquin Veterinary Hospital, and ALPHA Canine Shelter to raise funds and awareness in our first ever Pet — Donation and Adoption Awareness Drive:

Please join us on August 16 (in the morning, before it's too hot!), and bring anything from this list:

  • Blankets, sheets, towels (for the shelters)
  • Dog/cat toys
  • Dry dog and cat food
  • Paper towels
  • Aluminum cans (for recycling!)
  • Money!

There will be a vet on hand to answer questions, members of the SPCA, and adoptable dogs on site. Please bring your coffee and take your dog for a walk -- for a good cause!

There will also be drawings for FREE spay and neuter vouchers!

*Click on the flier above for more info.!

Where's pup? It's been 19 minutes since this blog was posted and he/she hasn't commented. What's up pup?

Pup is out collecting cans for the drive.  Just hope Pup doesn't start ripping off the blankets from the homeless.  Gotta love Pup

I volunteer locally for the Southern California Labrador Retiever Rescue and would love to donate. I will see you there!

This is great!  In addition to the suggestions above, is there a way to make a donation online?

OB56...thanks for thinking of me.

vwilroy...the blankets are ripping right off and collections are coming along nicely. ;o)-

Can't really understand all the hoopla about animals by the Californian.  Running pictures day after day about so called adoptions.  I would much rather see them run pictures of children in Kern County who are up for adoption and need a good home. Get real. A dog or a cat is just that. Some animal nuts try to make them into little people.

Luckily, there are proponents for both.

I have to agree with Neverleft.  With  the caveat that I realize not everyone has to feel or think the way I do.  Your mileage may vary.

The animals we had when I was a child were "farm animals".  Basically, they had jobs and we treated them very well, but never in a million years would we dress them or attend gathering where vets are discussed with the same seriousness and importance that moms in playgroups give to pediatricians.   I will never understand paying hundreds a month on medications for a pet.  Dogs should be dogs.  I think it's kind of cruel and unusual punishment to parade them around in clothes.  Similarly, dogs are animals who need room to run.  Cramming into the backyards I've seen in this town is, in my opinion, mean.   The recent bonanza of doggy cribs, doggy changing tables and diapers, birthday parties for a Chihuahua, and/or professional portrait settings are things I find ridiculous.  So... yeah.  Commence slamming.

I will be there ... thanks for providing a proactive venue for those who want to help.

I appreciate the wonderful response to this project!  We might not be curing cancer or ending world hunger, but we will hopefully make a dent in the small way that we can.  And, in my estimation, we're going to have fun doing it!

And for those of you who've asked, I will definitely post reminders so you don't forget.

Given the quality of parenting these days, maybe we should encourage more people to have more pets instead of kids, heh.

What's really sad is that if a cop sees you hitting a dog with a hairbrush or paddle, then he could arrest you for abusing an animal.  But, it's outside he jurisdiction of the police to do the same with a parent spanking a child.  Something tells me the priorities are out of whack.
