Conservative Nuttery

Yesterday, Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX) launched the Media Fairness Caucus, made up of about a dozen House Republicans, aiming “to fight liberal media bias.” The group will “point out unfair stories, meet with members of the media, and write op-eds and letters to the editor to highlight media bias,” Newsmax reported. Appearing on Fox News today, Smith declared that “liberal media bias” is a bigger threat to the United States than the recession or terrorism — and Fox’s Bill Hemmer seemed to agree:

SMITH: Let me just say — this is going to sound radical, I don’t mean for it to be radical — but to me, the greatest threat to America is not necessarily a recession or even another terrorist attack. The greatest threat to America is a liberal media bias.

HEMMER: I would not necessarily call that radical.

Watch it:

Smith must be concerned about a media system that hosts Liz Cheney a dozen times in ten days, or invites twice as many Republicans on as Democrats to discuss the stimulus package, or consistently favors conservative commentators and politicians on the Sunday political talk shows. Not to mention an entire cable network that blatantly cheer-leads for the far right.

The greatest threat to America is a liberal media bias. …

Then let's bring the troops home and let them fight this "greatest threat."  Why does Smith want his country to be left defenseless?

And why does Texas produce so many nutcases?

I just wish they would secede already.

More examples of conservative wingnuttery and their myth of a "liberal" media:

Best response to the conservative nuttery:

I suspect the greatest threat to America might be the salinization of our water table due to all the wingnut tears shed at this retarded pity party.

They can't afford to until after hurricane season is over.

Either I'm reading The Onion too much, or today's politicians aren't reading it enough.  I think I've read this story at least twice in The Onion, and THEN it was satire.

The Repubwhigans killed satire, Cat.   It is no longer possible to caricature them and have it stand out from some individual GOPbrain.

Life imitates farce.

And truth is stranger than fiction.

You know, I used to always have an awed respect for politicians.  I figured they had to have been smarter than me, savvier than me and more knowledgable than me to assume such an exalted office.  Now I know all it takes is ego and self-promotion.

Reality is getting really depressing.

Reality is getting really depressing.

Ain't that the truth, Catherine.

I just wish they would secede already.

Me too, although I'd be in favoring of keeping Austin in the U.S.

Honestly, does Lamar Smith think he's doing something worthwhile with this caucus? Like Catherine, I used to have respect for politicians. Now, I could count those politicians on one hand and have fingers left over.

The country went through this when the Whigs tore themselves apart.

"The first time as tragedy, the second as farce."

I used to always have an awed respect for politicians

Johnson and then Nixon ruined that for me.

does Lamar Smith think he's doing something worthwhile with this caucus

He's cementing his standing in the 21% of America that still call themselves Republicans.

And alienating the rest of the country.

I just have a cautious wariness of the entire gaggle of them... but Texas does seem to produce it's fair share of reactionaries.

BTW~ I am against letting them secede. That border is way too big to fence in....

Sage: Maybe we can build a river and then when they try to cross we can figure if that  will that make them wetbacks?

wetbacks

For shame, Msjenny.  The proper term is "hydrated immigrants."

That is a rather uncivil term to use and not one I consider funny or worthy of being in a joke. How low-brow of some of you to encourage its use.

posted by msjenny on Jun 5, 2009 at 08:07 AM

Shwaine: Why? I have been called that even though I  am a   USA citizen by other USA citizen, and you would have tto understand what I meant.

posted by Shwaine on Jun 5, 2009 at 03:03 PM

There are certain terms which you might use among your friends which you wouldn't use in front of your grandmother or to describe your grandmother, at least I would hope so. There are terms which you know are hurtful or hateful when used against you. And polite people do not use such terms on a forum such as this. That's the difference between being civil and being crass.
