Camp KEEP fundraising - big and small
You can help raise money for Camp KEEP ( Kern Environmental Education Program) on May 18 from 11 a.m. at the California Living Museum. CALM will donate a portion of the admission to Camp KEEP and the proceeds will help students pay for the program who could otherwise not afford it. Events include an academic competition between schools that attended Camp KEEP this year, the Kern County Superintendent of Schools said. About 3,000 Kern County students attend the program each school year where they learn about the environment and ocean life. The camp is in the Montaña De Oro State Park near Morro Bay as well as a campus near Cambria. ALSO ... The Geodesic Dome, where most camp activities take place, is run down and will be replaced by a "green" facility. The price tag, however, is $600,000 and the program is looking for a private or corporate sponsor to help fund the remaining $350,000. To contribute to this effort contact Camp KEEP I've never been to Camp KEEP but I've heard it's a big part of the community. What stories and memories do you have of the program? 10 comments from 10 users

I went to Camp KEEP three times. It was a great learning experience and it was one of the few opportunities I had to get out of town as a kid. We learned the intricacies and interconnectedness of ecosystems and why they should be admired, preserved, and protected. We also learned how fun it was to hike a nature trail and dig for ghost shrimp in a mud flat. Camp KEEP was instrumental in the way that I see the natural world and I do not doubt that it has influenced me to go on to a career teaching in the sciences. Many children will never get to go on a field trip, let alone one that takes them on a fun, interesting romp through the natural world. I urge anyone reading this to sponsor a child's trip to Camp KEEP and to keep them in mind when making donations this year. They run an excellent program and I truly hope my children are able to participate (when I have them).

I went to Camp KEEP and will remember it forever. Those who have taken part in the night time camp fire songs and waking up to a blown conch can relate to all those pictures. I know I can and sure hope KEEP gets all that it needs; it deserves it! "Live Oak Live Oak...oooh baby let your Live Oak flow, yeah yeah yeah yeah :D" Seems just like yesterday... Cabin: Starfish Year: 2000 Cost: $250 Memories: priceless!

I have been to KEEP as a student, twice as a counselor, and this year as a parent. Each trip will always have its own memories. The Naturalists will always amaze me, no matter how much I thought I learned the first time.. I was still taking home something new on my last trip. Great place for all ages. Hope to see it ( even without the dome) for many more years to come. great job! posted by

Camp Keep is one of the best educational tools (for the money) that exists for kids today. It's been threatened more than once when funds were tight. I hope it's here for generations to come. posted by

I have been to Camp KEEP 8 years in a row as a teacher and loved every minute of it. The naturalists make it an amazing experience each and every time. The dome will be missed as it is an icon of KEEP but the green facility needs to be built. My favorite memory is watching 2 coyotes frolic in the middle of the grassy field in front of the eyrie while the kids were in the dome preparing for a game of PIT. posted by

I went in 1985 for only thiryty five dollars. Jet Churchman, star football player at North High, was our counselor. It was awesome. I will always have fond memories of KEEP.
