A Good Book & A Long Plane Ride
I'm in the middle of packing for a holiday trip that involves a long plane ride. I love reading on the plane since it makes the time fly by fast and makes me feel like I'm actually accomplishing something after sitting there for so many hours. I'm actually lucky that I don't get car sick and I also enjoy reading in the car... when I'm the passenger! I have an interesting book to read by Paul Gillin, titled The New Influencers, so I'm set to go. It's all about how blogging, podcasting and other social media are profoundly disrupting the mainstream media and marketing industries. Might be interesting too for some of you bloggers out there. Typically, when I buy books, I usually read non-fiction a specific subject, so I prefer to shop online.Since online retailers seem to have an unlimited section, I can find what I need easily and inexpensively. There are a number of great online bookstores: But, what about that pre-internet idea of actually going to a bookstore to buy a book? Do people still go? Do you? I enjoy hanging out at bookstores, but I haven't discovered one in Bakersfield yet that has the right vibe for me. Which bookstores do you like? Which ones would you recommend? Make sure to review them in the inside guide. Click here to get started. 8 comments from 4 users

Where's Nan's, Anglo? I only know of Sam's out on Edison and the Book Exchange where Hwy 58 collides with Real Road. . You *RETURN* books? posted by

My favorite bookstores are Goodwills and the one downtown has a huge book section. Next to that, Barnes & Nobles because it has a big selection of local history books. Then there's the gift shop at Pioneer Village for that too. For straight up reading I prefer fiction. Suspense, intrigue, espionage, Middle Ages, Victorian Ages, early CA or most quasi history. I live "stuff" every day so when I read, it's to be in another place, another time, and with people who fit a certain character. I don't like "chick" books, fluff books, or books written in first person. I had a fondness for some light mystery books ...one called the Southern Sisters series..just because they were funny and I liked the characters....and another one Called the Alpine series...same reason. With no book on hand, I'll read any magazine out of boredom, a few from interest, and, out of serious boredom I'll read cereal boxes or toilet paper wrappers. If I'm still for long, I'm reading something. posted by

I like used bookstores also, Nan's in my neighborhood is great. Good prices and 50% back when you return your book. posted by

I love to hit used-book stores, but alas they're almost all gone now in Bakersfield. Only two of any note left. . I mostly read nonfiction, too, and either buy it new or pick up stuff from Friends of the Library sales.
