TomW - > All Politics Are Local -> Glenn Beck Gets It Wrong Intentionally
Glenn Beck Gets It Wrong Intentionally
So I'm sitting here watching Glenn Beck and his coverage of the Democratic debates last night.  You rarely get to see this kind of dishonest manipulation of the truth outside the White House Press Room so I thought I'd use my own comparatively small megaphone to set the record straight.

Anyway, the issue today is Beck's description of John Edwards' YouTube video that played last night during the debate.  Beck said the video was "mostly" about Edwards' hair.  Which is somewhat true.  He also played the first 10 seconds of the video without any sound.  When you see the video, I'm sure you'll be able to see where Glenn decided to cut the video.

UPDATE:  Here's the transcript of this part of his show  http://transcripts.cnn.com/...

I love the political process, probably more than most. I`m genuinely interested, because I think our children`s lives depend on the solutions of our next possible president. But even I bolted for the remote after a few minutes of the stupid snowman wasting my time.

The snowman was bad enough. But then the candidates actually made their own YouTube music videos. Sure, John Edwards` -- I`m not kidding you -- was mostly about his hair, which got me to thinking, maybe the candidates all got together, and they decided to approach this election like the movie "The Producers".

You know, if they make the election seem as ridiculous and unwatchable as possible, then maybe they just figure that we`ll all tune out and they can do whatever they want. Though, after last night, I honestly can`t imagine what nonsense anyone could come up with next.

Had a long day yesterday and am taking the day off.  To relax.  Why watching Beck seemed relaxing to me, I'm not quite sure.
posted by mattloch on Jul 24, 2007 at 04:40 PM
Most likely because of the large quantities of alcohol required to watch him. I know that usually relaxes me....

Dishonest manipulation of the truth is as American as apple pie.

I find it very interesting that it is the Edwards campaign bearing a huge brunt of the right-wing smear machine. From the cost of a hair-cut to his fees for every speech he has made on college campuses that focused on  the growing poverty in America he has been singled out with a peculiar vengeance. These mud-mongers have attacked Edwards as relentlessly as they have attacked Al Gore on global warming. All negative all the time. I think John Edwards worries conservative money guys the most of all the announced candidates.

I can't drink and watch Glenn.  Too much spinning.

Adam, I think that's right.  Edwards is talking about a sea change in politics.  The other thing is that the Republican Party spent a lot of time and money to convince people that George Bush is a rancher and Bill O'Reilly doesn't live and broadcast from Manhattan.  They want people to think that union folks are more likely to ride around in a limo than the guys at FOX.

H4F and I go back and forth on this, but for me, it's all economics at the end of the day.  Edwards' seems to be the only leading candidate who gets that.  Or the only one who gets it and thinks it's a problem.

I watched the video of Edwards saying that he plans of fighting all the corporate interests that plague our government. Talk about hair, it made my arm hairs stand up. John Edwards ROCKS!!!

Edwards is now my #2 choice, #1 among those actually running.  Moving higher all the time.

I'd like to see him start booting these contractors who are running our military and government into the ground.  There are a ton of places where privte companies do a better job than government.  But running hospitals and healthcare, military functions, and a bunch of other programs are not what business is good at.

Still backing Newt Gingrich, eh RF?

What can I say?  We *NEED* a thrice-married President who'll serve divorce papers on his wife while she's in the hospital for Chemo.
posted by TomW on Jul 24, 2007 at 05:22 PM
You may have to settle for Guiliani.  He may not have served papers on one of his wives in the hospital, but he did marry his cousin.  That's Family Values!
posted by randomfactor on Jul 24, 2007 at 05:26 PM
But did Rudy JulieAndrews marry his high-school geometry teacher?  See, we need a guy who knows all the angles...though Rudy gets extra points for sharing a mansion with his wife and mistress.  Conserves energy.
posted by stickbugs on Jul 24, 2007 at 05:36 PM
He should run as the "green" candidate in place of Gore.

TomW: "I can't drink and watch Glenn.  Too much spinning."

That's only because you're drinking it in the same direction he spins. I find that drinking with a counter-clockwise spin cancels out his clockwise spin and makes him watchable.

Yeah..we needed a thrice cheating president too RF.   You guys might as well face up to the fact that it looks like they all either divorce or cheat.  Some are just better at getting away with it than others.  In this day and age..a lot of the candidates are divorced and they are a reflection of the country...no  more apple pie, ice cream, Mom, and me.
posted by stickbugs on Jul 24, 2007 at 09:02 PM
I have as hard a time respecting the woman who stayed with the thrice cheater as the cheater himself.
posted by NancyII on Jul 24, 2007 at 09:18 PM

Maybe she stuck it out for the children..uhhhhh child.   LOL..riiiiight.

Power and fame are very strong aphrodisiacs.  What bothers me is the abuse of that power and, even though a woman has the ability to say no, I imagine too many are too flattered to turn away.

Wait!  We were supposed to be talking about Glenn Beck.   I like him.

Now you can jump my case.  LOL.

posted by mattloch on Jul 24, 2007 at 09:21 PM
In that case Nancy, I'd worry about the one preaching fire and brimstone for those that cheat.

Oh wait, what's the (D) candidates' record on that.......

Oh yea........

.

Stick, until you've had a spouse cheat on you, you really shouldn't judge......

I want to see what happens when/if  Fred Thompson decides to run.  Someone on here already called him an old drunk and another alluded to his "trophy wife."  Which she isn't by the way.  Anyhoo..if you think your slings and arrows won't be hurled at the Republican candidate, I've got some of that AZ beachfront property left to sell you.  Remember these prophetic words..   mmmwwwwhahaha.

As for Guiliani..  anyone who can conserve energy like that should be envied.  LOL.

Neither of those are his "Achillle's heal", Nancy.

Who?  Thompson or Guiliani (SP?)

So, anyone want to defend Glenn Beck's spin here?
posted by TomW on Jul 24, 2007 at 10:08 PM
Thompson raised money for Scooter Libby's defense.  Getting closer, Mattloch?
posted by NancyII on Jul 24, 2007 at 10:16 PM

I wasn't sure who Matt meant with the Achilles "heal"  (couldn't resist)  hehe

I didn't see the show and I guess the video went over my head so I can't comment.  I'm only 5'2" so some things do sail right over..especially when I'm half asleep.  See you good folks tomorrow.

Spam code ...keep that SAXLO

I will not have you insult GlennBeck, you can be banned, you know. Glen is the most honest, wonderful republican on televison, liberals could learn from Beck.
If he was not a man I could love him and kiss him, but we good republicans are not that way, at least not all of us. God bless you all for preying for our wonderful Glen.
posted by Hardliner4freedom on Jul 24, 2007 at 10:25 PM

Oh, geez, PF, ban thyself.

Being boring is a TOS violation.

Or better yet, make thyself useful and attend KHSD board meetings.  That's where you're at your finest.  Seriously.

I like Guliani, I prefer him in drag, but he cannot win that way. I guess the real  Rudy will have to stay in the closet until after the election...and he becomes the first female President. He is a great guy err..girl a great person.
I will vote for him or her, twice!

TOM....I'm back for 5 minutes or less.  I'm 95% sure I'm right but can a property management company charge a tenent for bug spraying?  Our newlyweds moved into a complex and are now seeing roaches around.  When they talked to the manager she told them they could bomb if they wanted to but if the company had someone come spray, they would have to pay for it.  I asked the kids where the water heater was because of the pilot light (if there is one) and they didn't know.  They asked the manager and she didn't know either.   Back when I lived in an apartment they had a service that came around regularly.  The kids did say they're finding dead bugs too which tells me the outside is being sprayed.  But what about the inside?

H4F you are soooo bad.  LOL

RE: jesushelper.....You can see how much good suspending people does now can't you?

posted by jesushelper on Jul 24, 2007 at 10:36 PM

I would not criticize any wonderful republican on this blog. I have seen in recent posts that doing so is a violation and can lead to permanent banishment.

And it is not snitching to report, just keeping the blog civil, as it should be in Bakersfield.

posted by TomW on Jul 24, 2007 at 10:53 PM
NANCY, I don't think they can.  Unless they can prove that the tenants themselves have caused the problem.  In a multiunit building, it would be impossible to prove and bombing a single unit wouldn't do any good anyway.  They might kill a few, but then the other roaches would come back.

Tell the newlyweds to get rid of anything the roaches might eat.  Cardboard boxes are a biggie that are often overlooked.

I love Newt, and if he is the candidate, he is my man. He will not disgrace the Whitehouse like Clinton, if he see a woman he likes, he marries her, not just play around.

And that fabricated story about home serving his dying wife divorced papers is entirely false; he was just exercising his nuptial agreement for his wife’s protection.

AS for marrying soon after this incident, Newt is a military mind, just what we need to fight Al Qaeda. His military mind told him that preparation is the best defense and one must always have on in the hanger and one on the runway.

Yes, Newt is the man, a man for all seasons and a gal for all reasons, we will not have the country's defense interest if we don’t elect Newt, and here is a man who can make the tough decisions including life and death with impersonal precision and without hesitation. If you think Patton was tough, you have not seen Newt in action, he will slap down all those cowards and malingerers.

Nancy "heel", alright already. Damn spelling/grammar Nazis....... (you'll also notice I'm not going back to correct my gaffe. Yet another case of me being too damn honest for my own damn good) (PPS: "Hilary" is spelled with two "L"s. The More You Know.)(Hypocrisy, thy name is Nancy)(Parens, the new slashies)

Nope, not close. I wasn't even talking about what Tom mentioned; although that's a fun one, not close. His choice of Tim Griffin was also a nice gift.....

No, I was looking at a few others. Experience....... presenting legislation....... and voting records........ all three verrrry interesting for those who don't know them........

Bonus points for his "work ethic".

Extra bonus points for the "little red truck".

Matt.....I couldn't resist razzing you.  I think we did this once before only it was the other way around.  ..sorry if it offended you.  You guys should know by now I don't correct peoples spelling or grammar as a rule..only in fun.  You busted me on Hilary (note the consistancy) though.  :-)  Seriously, are you seriously saying I'm a hypocrite?

I was half asleep last night when I posted and I just got up so am the other half of asleep...and lost.   All I asked was which man you were talking about with the reference to the achilles heel.

(PS..I left out an apostrophe on "peoples"..heaven only knows where it should go to keep me out of trouble)

posted by mattloch on Jul 25, 2007 at 08:40 AM
Nancy, I laughed about it. No offense intended, none taken. (Unless you did intend on offending me, in which case I'm highly offended and you owe me an apology.)

I was talking about Thompson. Guiliani's faults are not isolated on his heel, but all over the place. (His weakest spot is his "anti-terrorism" credentials, which include keeping the same radios that had problems in the 1993 WTC bombing, and placing the emergency response headquarters into a building that was hit previously by terrorists. Good job there. You sure taught those terrorists a lesson.....)

You guys sure had me laughing this morning! But Tom - on a serious note - if you watch Beck to relax I think you might need professional help ;-) I certainly agree about some of those questions. I really wanted to watch but ended up taking the dog for a walk because I couldn't stand listening/watching any more.
posted by TomW on Jul 25, 2007 at 12:06 PM
AnonCon, I watch Beck for the same reason I listen to Limbaugh: to see if I know enough to refute in real time.  This was just so egregious I had to post it.  Also, I really liked the Edwards' video.
posted by TomW on Jul 25, 2007 at 12:49 PM
Sorry, lemme explain better:  Glenn Beck is relaxing because he pitches high and soft across the middle.  You can just ding them out of the park.

On a side note: "high and soft" sounds like a better description for Rush.  :)

...which is why I sometimes listen to talk radio in my car during my lunchtime drive, Tom. (Usually when the Talk of the Nation topic is uninteresting, which isn't very often, but still.....) If I can't find three factual errors or ommissions in the seven minutes it takes for me to drive from work to home or vice-versa, well then I'm just not trying hard enough. There have been times when I couldn't get out of the parking lot before I hit half a dozen.....
posted by AnonCon on Jul 25, 2007 at 03:26 PM

I was just kidding. Trust me - you know enough to refute them. Of course that's not saying much ;-) Sorry, couldn't help myself.
