TomW - > All Politics Are Local -> Pakistan Offers Safe Harbor to Bin Laden
Pakistan Offers Safe Harbor to Bin Laden

I'd like to give a bit of ramp up here, but the article speaks for itself:

From Gulfnews.com
"Miranshah: Pro Taliban militants and the Pakistani government signed a peace deal on Tuesday, according to Pakistani negotiators.

The militants said they would stop attacks in Pakistan and across the Afghan border on the condition that the Pakistani government stop air and ground operations in the Waziristan region and dismantle newly built checkposts.

People arrested during military operations will also be released under the agreement and confiscated property, including weapons, would be returned."

Yes, it seems our allies in Pakistan are negotiating peace with the Taliban and returning their property and weapons.  But that's not the best part.  Remember that guy who Bush wanted Dead or Alive?  That of course was in 2001.  Later he said he wasn't that concerned about him.  Apparently, the treaty goes a step further:

From ABC:

If he is in Pakistan, bin Laden "would not be taken into custody," Major General Shaukat Sultan Khan told ABC News in a telephone interview, "as long as one is being like a peaceful citizen."

So Bush is about to lay the smack down, right?  Countries that harbor terrorists are the same as terrorists and all that.  If his doesn't, he has just surrendered in the real war on terror.

More as the story rolls in:

The Pakistani regime of Gen. Pervez Musharraf has been negotiating truces - with the Bush administration's encouragement - with Islamic separatists in North Waziristan and South Waziristan, mountainous tribal areas along the Afghan border where U.S. officials think bin Laden may be hiding.

Anyone want to try to make sense of this?

Bush said it was OK to give bin Laden a pass.  This Misadministration has already disbanded the unit supposedly looking for him, probably in exchange for Osama's help in getting Bush re-elected in '04.  Professional courtesy, you know.

You know, this is why we need Democrats to take over.  They are at least serious about fighting the War on Terror.  Bush and his guys just want to screw around.  This war would be over if we had someone in charge who cared about Americans instead of corporations.

The war on Terra is going wonderfully isn't it. It's OK, Bin Laden wasn't that important anyway, right? He's only wanted for a few terrorist attacks on the US.

I think I'm figuring this out.

.

If, on Sept. 11, the media replay Bush's vows to capture those responsible for 9/11, the media will be accused of "liberal bias" and "Bush-bashing."

They'll get it even more if they play the above  video of Bush saying he isn't that concerned about Bin Laden.

"As long as one is being like a peaceful citizen"?  (Tom, please fix your ABC link.  It does not work, and I wanted to verify the statement before commenting on it.)

.

If I read this at face value, let's think about it for a moment.
.
Imagine Ted Bundy or Richard Ramirez, serial killers, wanted by the police.  But after finally solving the case and linking them to their crimes, they find Ted and Richard "behaving as peaceful citizens."  The police go home, without making an arrest.
.
(And imagine the screaming about "soft on crime liberals" while you're at it.)
.
Well, if what ABC has reported what I think it has, Bush is willing to let a man go free who killed a hundred times as many people.

Hey Hardliner, they moved the story on me, but the link above is fixed.  Pakistan as issued a new statement as well.  The new stance is that they have not created a safe haven.  Instead, they offer this:

"If someone is found there, we will see what is to be done," General Sultan said today. "Pakistan is committed to the war on terror, and of course we will go after any terrorist found to be operating here," he said.

So they've agreed not to go in to Waziristan.  They'll give the Taliban their weapons back, but if they find someone operating as a terrorist in the area that they will not enter, they "will see what is to be done."

Comforting.

I'd like to see the talking hating heads on radio and FOX spin their way out of this one.  For America's sake, I hope they try.

.

"We're fighting a war on terror!  We're going to bring the perpetrators of 9/11 to justice!  Support the Patriot Act and sacrifice your privacy for security!!!  Money is no object -- even if it's the better part of a trillion dollars!  We're going to get them!!!"

.

Remember that refrain?  My bet is that Pakistan gets the free pass.

.

(And just think: it's election season.  What sweet timing.  I thought only Clinton was capable of political blunders that catastrophic.)
.
(But if the media point this out, out come the whines of "Bush bashing" and "liberal bias" again...)
