TomW - > All Politics Are Local -> Rumsfeld Resigns
Rumsfeld Resigns
Word on the news now is that Donald Rumsfeld is going to resign.  Speculation is that Joe Lieberman will be chosen to replace him.  If this occurs, the Senate will at most be 50-50 which would turn control back to the Republicans because Dick Cheney will choose who leads the Senate.

Any bets, projections?

Updated:  Robert Gates is now the nominee to replace Don Rumsfeld.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...

At 10, they are going to announce the replacement.  I am seeing red right now.  If it is Lieberman, every Democrat who refused to pick sides in the Lieberman/Lamont battle is to blame.

How will Lieberman replacing Rumsfeld give the GOP a Senate seat?

Tom, that would sure take the sting out of the day.

If someone steps down from the Senate in CT, the Republican Governor gets to appoint a new one.

OK, that was almost a very very bad day.  Glad Rumsfeld is gone.  Hopefully, this new guy, Bob Gates, will do the right thing.  As for the President, he's giving the Democrats are terrorists part of his speech now.

Lieberman's got to get confirmed first, if nominated.
.
But a Republican senator from Connecticut would be preferable to Lieberman in many ways.
.
And if the timing is right, the Democratic Lt-Governor of Connecticut might get to make the decision, since the current Governor is under a cloud of suspicion and more than half the CT residents want him to resign...
.
UPDATE:  Sorry, apparently that was the *LAST* corrupt Republican Governor of Connecticut.  My bad.

Robert Gates, former CIA guy and part of the James Baker Iraq study group will be put in Rummy's place..god willing and the Dem's agree :)

So once again, Bush's Daddy's man Baker is expected to pull Shrub's chestnuts from the fire.  Thank goodness *SOMEONE* grown-up is taking over, maybe.

If someone had been diseased enough to spread that rumor in the last week of the campaign, Lieberman would have been lucky to garner 35% of the vote. Good thing even the sick have morals...

I agree Random..Baker and his cadre are the Bush family fixers..

And, of course, they'll likely try to push through the nomination before the new Senate convenes, so as to limit the questions and subpoenas.  Wonder if the Democrats will be smart enough to stall for the next term?

I've been hearing that rumor for a while now, Mattloch.  Glad to hear it didn't come to pass.  Gates ain't great, but he's not Rumsfeld and that means Democrats keep control of the Senate.  I can at least live with that.

One down, two to go!!!!

The Shrub actually stated in his press conference that he talked to Gates about this job last week in Crawford. They knew they were in trouble..and I love it.

The Shrub sounds very pissed off..like he has a chip on his shoulder..no more slam the dems, blame the dems bs either..
posted by TomW on Nov 8, 2006 at 10:26 AM
I think the Democrats should push him through.  There is no reason to allow Rumsfeld to stay on a minute longer than neccessary and if Gates is approved now, his screwups can't be placed on a Democratic Senate.
posted by randomfactor on Nov 8, 2006 at 10:28 AM
Hmmm, Dusty.  Last week, huh?  About the time when Bush was saying Rumsfeld would stay until 2008, right?
posted by antiextremism on Nov 8, 2006 at 10:36 AM
I think if they wanted to replace Rummy with Satan, the dems might rubber stamp it. LOL

I guess stay the course didn't apply to the Rummeister. But seriously, all his arrogance and excuses aside, who is going to come out smelling like a rose in what was a bad idea to begin with.

When we do pull out, and civil war ensues, I'm sure the Dems will get all the blame for not staying that course.

Anyone else catch the Daily Show/Colbert Report last night? Colbert had a cake made up if the Republicans won, a huge sheet cake with a US map in red saying "Congratulations Republicans". He had to make up a cake in case the Democrats won, so it was a sheet cake with the smiling face of a stereotypical terrorist holding a cartoon bomb, saying "Congratulations Terrorists". Then he mentioned the Democratic cake was devil's food cake.

I was laughing for hours over that one.

Then Colbert ended his show by quitting and going out to his car, and ended up talking to his driver (Uncle Sam). His driver convinced him to stay, because "the Democrats have been in power for only a few minutes, and already this war is unwinnable!"

I'm still laughing over that one.

Finished the champagne bottle at 10:30 and decided I'd catch the reruns tonight.

Mattloch, I saw the Midtacular last night.  Very nice.  It went along nicely with Bush's speech today where he was saying to the terrorists don't confuse our Democratic process with weakness or lack of resolve.  Because, you know, just because Democrats are better at keeping America and the world safe, they are also weak on terror.
posted by randomfactor on Nov 8, 2006 at 10:48 AM

AntiEx, Satan's more popular than Rumsfeld.

.

Democrats don't use terror in their politics, Tom.  That's why Republicans are stronger on it.

Well, we've finally gotten some sanity back.  Now let's pound on our guys for the next year.  MCA: gone.  Patriot Act: rewritten.  FISA reinstated as part of the Patriot Act.  Bankruptcy law, rewritten.  Social Security lockbox, paygo rules in the budget.  Lobbyist reform.  Medicare repaired.  Minimum wage hike.  Bush's tax plan rolled forward and a middle class tax cut.  Rewrite the AMT.  On and on.

I didn't see the show last night mattloch, but when I read your post to Hubby, he commented "Yeah, instead of cut and run, it's gonna be turn and walk".  ;-)

Better that than "lie and die."

Any change at this point is a good one.  We will get out in a year.  There is nothing else we can do unless we put another 400,000 troops in and America doesn't have the stomach for that since even that is no guarantee of a win.

For what it is worth, Bush finally mustered up some Balls to act on his own realize that the war is not going well. Too bad that he did not realize this years ago, declared victory and took a powder.

Firing Rumsfeld should only be a beginning, President Bush has much work to do to extract us from what is and has been for sometime, an unwinnable position.

The people have spoken, except in Kern County where as usual everyone is out of step but us. However election results in our County are normal and our elections showing other wise would not be realistic.

With the trampling Bush and his party received at the ballot box let us hope that the new Democratic majority will be more civil and forgiving than their Neocon predecessors who like Bakersfield football coaches not only loved to run up the score but trample on the carcasses.

It is interesting to note that Bush reached into the past and his father’s administration for a Rumsfeld replacement in Mr. Gates, and old Bush senior CIA man to do the job. Gates was one of Bush senior’s advisors who counseled against invading Iraq in Gulf I, realizing the quagmire that would follow something unforeseen by Bush II and Rumsfeld.

Only Time will tell whether Bush can restrain the surviving Neocons and work with the new congress that will be less anxious to work with Gates than they would be with Rumsfeld.

However it turns out the coming changes can only be positive given the incivility of the last six years

Cheney is the last of the neocons and will not longer decide policy since Gates can't stand his ass. My hope is that Dead-eye Dick will get to spend alot more time hunting on his property..and when in DC, will only do the usual VEEP stuff..smiling and appearing at places the Shrub doesn't feel like appearing at.

As for kern, there were more democratic votes cast than ever in its history according to my hubby. He is a Repube, so this didn't make him happy. It made my morning, dont' ya know...
posted by mattloch on Nov 8, 2006 at 01:23 PM
If you want paranoia, how about this: Cheney comes down with "pneumonia" during the winter recess. They replace him with an "heir apparent" at the beginning of February, who can pull a "Ford" if one of the subpoenas hits a Powerball-style jackpot; and if not has a head start on the '08 run without running afoul of that pesky 22nd Amendment. The only (ok, one of many) hitch(es) is that there is no heir apparent after last night.

Just doing my part to keep the celebration from getting too far out of control.....  :)

Now let this be a lesson to all of us.  Don't let Inga Barks interview you and call you Uncle.  You'll lose your job.

Since Inga brags about knowing Tony Snow, could we get her to interview Uncle Dubya?

What's ironic is that George 1's people can't stand George 2, yet they are the ones being called to the rescue.

Even Hannity and Limbaugh, the speaking heads for the necons are backtracking and laying blame on the party and the repubs on the hill for not addressing the real issues, thus losing the elections.

Rush, the hipocrit, really wants the Dems in power. He's finding out it's a lot easier to throw rocks than defend the glass house.
