Hillary and Nancy Have Had Enough of W.
Maybe in the heat of a Friday with all the focus on Barack Obama's overseas trip, and a US delegation meeting with representatives from Iran scheduled in Europe to discuss the ongoing nuclear questions, the subtle changes introduced to change how abortion is defined might get overlooked. The proposed changes in definition, which would transform many forms of contraception into acts of abortion, has caught Hillary Clinton's full attention. It has caught Nancy Pelosi's full attention, too. Pelosi recently described Bush as a "total failure", and in response to questions from reporters over the remark candidly stated she was just being polite. Pelosi demanded that Bush "reject this policy." "We will fight you every step of the way," Clinton said of the president. "It is an end run around the rights of women to make choices about our own health and we are not going to stand for it," said Clinton. "We will not put up with this radical ideological agenda to turn the clock back on women's rights." Bush and his enablers can now argue with this change that women should never have an abortion, and should never use contraception either. It is what a barefoot and pregnant government ideological policy is all about for females in this country. 37 comments from 11 users

Even though I read the link twice incase there was something I misunderstood, is there any way this story is a hoax? If not, then there is no room for doubt: The President of the United States has lost his mind. posted by

The original blog I saw was on a .gov website, so I doubt it's a hoax. As a woman who uses contraceptives for a medical condition, this angers me. I really don't want to go back to being in pain half the time just because some neocons have a religious objection to my medication. And to me, contraceptives are medication; just as vital to my ability to function daily as insulin would be to a diabetic. Without them, I would be so pain-ridden that I doubt I would be able to work. So yeah, I get very upset whenever someone objects to my medication based on their religious biases. However, to be fair, both this article and the blog I read yesterday are so dripping with political rhetoric that it's a little hard to judge exactly what they're trying to do. Is it about all contraception or just emergency contraception for example. It's hard to tell from all the rhetoric, but sounding like it's primarily about emergency contraception from the examples cited. I would have preferred a link to the actual text of the proposed rule before firing off in righteous indignation. If anyone finds it, please post it. Edit: Here's the blog I saw yesterday: www.speaker.gov/blog/ posted by

No, when impeachment is back *ON* the table I'll believe Nancy's had enough of W. Schwaine, emergency contraception and IUD's this time. But make no mistake--the antiabortion loonies are just as up in arms about Griswold v. Connecticut as they are Roe v. Wade, and their aim is to make sure every woman has the danger of dying from pregnancy complications every time the sluts have sex. And that is not hyperbole. posted by

Congress would never pass such filth. And surely they wouldn't let telecom companies slide on civil penalites for felonious behavior, either. posted by

Incompetence, thy name is Democrat: "In the six years between President Bush's inauguration in 2001 and the Democrats' assumption of control of Congress in 2007, the price of gasoline rose an average of 14 cents a year. Since the Democrats took over Congress, the price of gas has doubled"

Due to what, dril? You've said yourself Congress didn't accomplish anything--so it must be the result of what Shrub is blundering on these days. George W. Bush's whole presidency has been like the old joke about the guy who fell off the Empire State Building. As he passed the tenth floor, still accelerating, he was heard to say "well...so far I'm OK..." posted by

Nancy's claim to fame is the same one Hillary wanted: the "first woman" blue ribbon gets them into the history books and the performance and accomplishments in office are less of a priority. With the first woman annoyance out of the way, I'm sure the next female is more likely to have the competence that is expected. Obama's "first black" blue ribbon, hopefully, will not be his major accomplishment. posted by

Oh, the link works all right. So not drilling ANWAR is what caused the gas prices to rise. Although the previous Republican-misled Congress didn't drill ANWAR either. And not drilling offshore caused gas prices to rise. Although the previous Congress didn't drill there either. . If you're blaming the Democrats for following the Republicans' lead on energy policy, then again--I wholeheartedly agree, it's a stupid idea. If you're saying it's something the Democrats have done differently from the Republicans, and started doing with this Congress, I ask you again to point it out. . What caused the gas price rise is Phil Gramm. Watch for him to ooze his way back onto McBush's campaign staff. McBush *NEEDS* Gramm, since he doesn't "get" all this economy stuff. . Being thin, well dressed, and going to the gym constantly, where he can shower with sweaty men, may just earn Obama the "first gay" blue ribbon as well. Seen Shrub in bicycle shorts, dril? Pelosi's Botox must have been injected a bit too deeply. She's against the redistricting measure on the November ballot because she claims that it will raise Republican representation in the state legislature. The way it is right now, there's a bunch of incumbents on both sides who run virtually unopposed, and the ballot measure will make things more competitive. Can't have that, can we? posted by

Conservatives critical of the "Democrat controlled" do-nothing congress are quick to blame the nation's present woes on the liberals who have been stymied by a lack of a proper plurality of deciding votes and a vetoing president. Unfortunately, Republicans in congress are still able to prevent legislation through filibuster and veto despite the Democrats' very slim congressional majority. These people are not on the same planet with 90 percent of the rest of the country who know that the nation is crumbling due to Republican ineptitude, mismanagement and failed domestic and foreign policies for the past eight years. Drilnlift, you are way out of touch with reality. Your hostility toward commie liberals has clouded your ability to see the truth.

Ultra conservative, fundamentalist evangelist ideologues are bent on overturning Roe vs Wade and stripping individuals of other personal freedoms in the name of God. They can't even get the conservative stacked courts to help, so they keep trying end arounds with new unconstitutional legislation like this latest attempt to deprive women of freedom of choice. Unfortunately, they know that a great part of the thinking populace will not bother to voice their two cents at the polls while bible beaters will turn out in droves to support some initiative steeped in theocratic crap.

Funny off base stuff on a subject about contraception, and the potential loss of many contraceptive options available to women. Maybe contraceptives will be permitted when it becomes strictly an oil based product. When Viagra is covered by many health plans while birth control is not covered says it all about any pretense of gender equality in this nation. I think the way Republicans continue to treat women will be one of the key reasons this election will be vastly different, and super majorities in both Houses might just happen.

Can we get back to the subject at hand? Plenty of other blogs for bashing parties or whining about gas prices. The issue here is certain people wanting to impose their religious beliefs on the health of women. Because I know several women besides myself who use birth control more for health reasons than anything else. And we're quite frankly hopping mad about this subject. I know one woman with a heart condition that could die if she got pregnant. Myself, I have no desire to go back to feeling like someone is running my guts through a blender every day. And if you think welfare is bad now, think about how bad it would be if there was no contraceptives. posted by

JBS, it is my understanding from reading a variety of articles on this subject that yes these are major health insurers like, Aetna, Cigna, WellPoint and others who are declining to cover birth control pills, but will cover erectile dysfunction meds. As Shwaine correctly points out birth control pills can be prescribed for a variety of conditions that many women contract, but even so this is purely discrimination at work regarding sex and the sexes. It is discouraging to see in the 21st century American women denied equality to the point that states must enact legislation to try and force health insurers to comply with equal protections. This is an older article, but sadly this issue remains pertinent today. The article reports what many states were forced to do to try and get equal coverage. I don't understand why women continue to accept second class status and treatment in this country. How any woman could vote for a candidate who would block her right to a prescribed contraception is beyond me. posted by

Sadly, the women who need birth control the most are the ones who cannot afford it without assistance. Then people wonder why those who cannot afford to raise children still seem to be having them. posted by

How any woman could vote for a candidate who would block her right to a prescribed contraception is beyond me. I can tell you why, especially after living in this valley for over eight years. Many, many, many women believe that the man should be the one to make all of the decisions in the relationship, including who the woman should vote for. A lot of women won't even get involved with a man unless he hits them, so voting for whomever The Dominant Male says to is considered to be one of their essential duties.

Adam, some women don't even think to look up that sort of voting record. I was IMing with a friend who now lives across country and mentioned how McCain had sidestepped a question from a reporter about legislating insurance companies to cover contraceptives even though his voting record shows he voted against such legislation. She hadn't heard about the story nor had thought about looking into the candidates' opinions on such matters until I brought it up. posted by

That NOT the way it's supposed to work! Even I was surprised to hear a woman bragging about how her other half would "knock her lights out" if she didn't do what he said, and she said it in a sweetie-pie voice, as if getting KO'd by her boyfriend was just the cutest thing! In some cultures, men that don't "discipline" their women are looked upon as being weak and are often ostracized. I gotta concur with your observation, johnburns. I've seen it myself and ain't talkin' white trash and welfare mamas. Several times I've come across women in the workplace who seem to seek abusive relationships, but that's a different topic. Anyway, women have taken a slight majority of college enrollment and will probably overtake males in college graduations. I'm not being entirely facetious when I tell a young man, "You can either go to school or find a woman who can hold a job and pay the bills." It embarrasses me to admit it, but I'm one of these guys who did a 180-degree turnaround regarding attitudes toward women and their issues. Very simple. I have a daughter. She deserves more than the status put onto my mother or my sister. Like alot of parents, I often feel that my counseling to the kid goes ignored. But she does surprise me enough times to let me know at least something is getting through. Oh, and Mrs. Catpaw meekly said, "yes, dear" and immediately took out the trash and began scrubbing the kitchen floor on her hands and knees. (Yeah, right.)
