5 minute rule not enforced

Idling Longer Than 5 Minutes is Illegal

The new 5 minute idling rule is not being enforced.  Yesterday morning a dozen trucks were observed idling for much longer periods of time at the Flying J truck stop on Merced and Hwy 99.  My friend tells me several trucks are still idling all night at the Flying J in Lebec.

I understand the CHP would rather not enforce this law.  They care more about speeders and drunks who kill other people.  The problem is, the bad air, produced in part by these idling trucks, also kills.

Do you have any links that explain this law a little more?  It seems a little harsh, what with truckers living in their trucks and having mandated rest periods and needing A/C or heat to sleep comfortably. The air IS filthy, but this will make trucking more expensive.  Those expenses will only be passed on to consumers.  The increasing inflation could cause a recession.  The left will blame the greedy corporations and Republicans.  Democrats will be elected by gullible voters who can't find their chads with both hands. Ohh, my head hurts.

 I found this..  http://www.ttnews.com/artic...

On the History Channel or one of those programs a while back they showed some truck stops have installed tubes that supply A/C or heat through the truck window and also have electrical and cable lines in them.  The fee is per hour depending on what services are used.

If you've been to the Flying J truck stop mentioned above, you saw how it can get on a busy night.  The main lot is full, the street is completely lined with trucks, and the overflow is across the street at Burger King.  There's no way a truck stop could supply enough amenities to service all those trucks.

Are the drivers to suffocate in 100 degree weather or freeze in below zero weather?

Here Dril..I have some extra Tylenol.

Sounds like one of those laws that are impractical and difficult to enforce. Who's going to stand by every truck with a stop watch? Recall the mandatory 55 mph speed limit?  Went over like a fart in church, even though it saved gas and saved lives. Somebody needs to take this law back to the drawing board. Who ever came up with it obviously is not a trucker and did not carefully think it out.

Since the fine is a minimum $300 one or two people could be hired by CARB or the CHP to patrol the San Joaquin Valley until there is enough compliance to no longer pay for the position.  This requires more of a meter-maid type of job.
