Report: Worker dies in Long Island Wal-Mart stampede

From the New York Daily News web site this morning:

A worker died after being trampled and a woman miscarried when hundreds of shoppers smashed through the doors of a Long Island Wal-Mart Friday morning, witnesses said.

The unidentified worker, employed as an overnight stock clerk, tried to hold back the unruly crowds just after the Valley Stream store opened at 5 a.m.

Witnesses said the surging throngs of shoppers knocked the man down. He fell and was stepped on. As he gasped for air, shoppers ran over and around him.

More details here.

This is insane.  It's it time to stop the "Biggest Shopping Day Of The Year" madness.  People will buy the same amount of merchandise no matter when it's offered, it should just be spread out over the month.  Let them go back to the blinking "Blue Light Special" where if you aren't already in the store you don't get it.

Black Friday shouldn't mean black as in funeral dress.

Troubles here, my comma key is sticking.  I make enough run on sentences without help from my computer.

What a shame our country has come to this. What do we really NEED here? We all have more than any other country in the world and our "poor" are rich compared to real poor people around the world. Have you even gone to Mexico and built a one room house for a family living on a dirt floor with pallets for walls and a roof? Now that is poor. I understand there are real people in need out there, but most people have plenty. There is a big difference between NEEDS and WANTS, that is where our country has gotten confused. The housing crisis is largely the buyers fault, even if the lenders promised them the moon. When my husband and I bought our house we were qualified for 2 1/2 times a loan than what we actually bought. My dad always said to never overspend on anything. (my parents lived through the depression) We purchased a house for far less and have a low house payment. We did that so that if one of us could not work the house payment would be manageable for 1 person. I am not into keeping up with the Jone's. Maybe our citizens need to reevaluate their priorities.

Human behavior is DE-volving. We are headed backwards to the 'animal' phase. Pretty sad really. I went to one of these "sales" once...................suffice it to say I have never gone again. I would rather pay full price for an item then go through that again.

Witters, it's my laptop..havnen't had it that long...lol.  It's not really sticking, just doesn't show if I don't hit it VERY firmly.

The truth is we don't need any of the stuff put out as teasers on blitz day.  The other truth is that the greed of both the consumer and the retailer is disgustin.  Back when I worked WM I did one of "those days" and a man came to our department (cosmetics) and asked for a paper towel.  Someone had run into his basket and smashed his hand and he was bleeding like a stuck hog.

I've heard people say it's a game and they love it...look forward to it every year.  I think they all need a psych evaluation.

I say stop the insanity.

Very sad, what in the hell was so important in Walmart?

witterpitters:'I would rather pay full price'   Amen to that!

They should identify every single shopper on the video taken right before this happened (and I bet they have video of it happening) and charge them with negligent homicide. Maybe then that would wake people up to the fact that you don't get to act like savages and trample people to death just because it's Black Friday.

The Human Condition~ sadly very little changes, greed, might is right,"whoever dies with the most stuff wins"....and a civil word to your fellow human?....or even just shutting up when you want to go for the jugular????

Bah Humbug.

THANK GOD the fire marshall showed up and closed the doors at the Rosedale Wal-Mart.  I have been in many  Black Friday events and this was by far the worst ever.  People could not move.  It sucked so bad and Wal-Mart does such a poor job of it.  They need to hand out tickets for the big stuff that the people want, have it all up at the registers so they can be picked up on the way out after purchase. This would cut down on people with two 42" tv's in one cart trying to weave in and out of a thousand people.  I waited in line for 2 1/2 hours to get one digital camera.  They had one register in the camera dept and that was the only way to get the camera.  Bad idea.  I never say never, but this may be the last time I do this.  Online is the way to go now.

Marcus, sorry but you knew what you were in for when you went and sttod in line for that long.  I can't imagine hat you saved enough money to make that whole experience worth it.  There will be sales up the wazoo in the next few weeks...people ned to utilize THEM and not buy into the insanity.  I do NOT feel sorry for customers who step in front of a train and yell danger.

First I can recall such craziness was back in the mid 80's when cabbage patch dolls were all the rage. My Daughter wanted one just like every other little girl. Women were having fights in stores when the orders would come in. Needless to say my baby girl got a knock off for Christmas. She was happy with it, and Mamma didn't give or get any bruises over it. I swear, people have lost their dang minds. Act like a wild herd of idiots...How could anyone say Merry Christmas, or Happy Holidays after a senseless death by stampede.

Last year I made a You-Tube video questioning a group of people at Valley Plaza why they felt they had to buy gifts, when they could make gifts or bake goods to express their appreciation. The video was supposed to critique consumerism, but it actually turned out comical. The link is below

I try to avoid Black Friday altogether, but I ended up buying Suze Orman's The 9 Steps to Financial Freedom at Russos. I try to support local stores when possible and avoid Wal-Mart at all costs.

I think ~witters~ is correct...we may be evolving forward with our technology..but many of mankind are displaying signs that they are de-volving...has mankinds evolution come to a brick wall? Are we devolving back into time? Some 'humans' sure do act like it....with NO respect for life....

This is absolutely disgusting.

Kimberly Cribbs, who witnessed the stampede, said shoppers were acting like "savages."

"When they were saying they had to leave, that an employee got killed, people were yelling `I've been on line since yesterday morning,'" she said. "They kept shopping."

So reguardless of a loss of a human life...We have to get the G.I.Joe with the Kung Fu action for KeShawn....or don't come home----so we are reverting back into time

This reminds me of that movie "Jingle All the Way" with Arnold Schwartzenegger.  He has to get a Turboman doll for his son, and dangerous craziness ensues.  The movie was pretty much a social commentary on the materialism of Christmas--a point that was missed by my 4-year-old, who now wants a Turboman doll.
