I feel so guilty
Today a chihuahua found me. Actually it was loose and ran right to my car while I was stopped. I opened the door and it wanted in, so I took to a big hearted neighbor who might have kept it until it's owner was found, but unfortunately her husband answered the door and said NO WAY. Since I have a dog, and knowing my dog, I felt the only thing to do was take it to the SPCA. But they weren't able to accept any dogs today, and referred me to the Mt. Vernon pound. Please tell me - does the pound at least keep the dog for a couple of days in case the owner comes to find it? PS - location was behind N.H.S.

You could have taken it to the Terraki Bowl on South Real. I hear they accept small dogs and cats..... posted by

You just made a very good case for tags. Our cat is kept inside most of the time. It does have a collar with metal name tag and phone numbers (home and cell). I got it at Pet Smart (my kid calls it "pet fart") for less than $5. If the owner had used a few minutes of prudence, you wouldn't be posting this blog. posted by

OB...in the Philippines, only men are allowed to eat dogs. I wonder why.... bako...try Alpha Canine Sanctuary. Also, the SPCA on Rosedale will take him, and unless I am wrong, they are a no-kill shelter. posted by

This ones for you Old Blue! http://www.kanyak.com/ckett...
Thanks for the sympathy everyone, the SPCA was too full, so they had to turn me away. But the pound said they do wait to see if the owner comes to them. I just wish I could have kept her! posted by

Kern County Animal Control will hold the dog for five days before putting it up for adoption, if it is adoptable. One thing I would advise is to place a free "found ad" in the Bakersfield Californian. Give a brief description and state in the ad that the dog is in the shelter on Mt. Vernon. You can also place a found ad online on this web site. One other option is to place a found ad on craigslist (bakersfield.craigslist.org) in case the owner looks there. Check the paper for the next few days to see if there's a "lost" ad that matches the description of the dog you found. If so, call them and let them know the dog is at the shelter on Mt. Vernon. I know you're feeling guilty for taking the dog there, but it's far better than what may have happened should the dog have continued to wander the streets. You did all you could, and a lot more than a lot of other people would have. Here's hoping the dog is reunited with his or her family soon.

That's how I got Ollie. No one answered my ads and after she was mauled by the neighbor's dog, I decided to keep her. You're right catpaw, it is a good case for tags. At the very least a tag with address and phone number. I know allot of people resist the vaccination and registration laws, but you can make these tags at Wal-Mart, Pet-Co or Pet-Smart. They're cheap and people who find your pets do call. posted by

Hope you had your speakers up Old Blue. The poor baby had no collar and was not microchipped per the SPCA. At least they helped me as much as they could, but had to send me to Mt. Vernon. I will watch the ads and place a found ad now. posted by

Dogs toast..night night little buddy..shoulda kept him for a week and put up found posters around where you picked him up..and an add in the found column in the bakersfild CA..its free....if nothing else you could have given him to someone that was willing to try.. sorry Im being so gruff but chi wah wahs and pitbulls are pretty much euthanized on a regular basis at Mt Vernon.. ..we have helped find homes for lost dogs many times in the past or better yet found the little heart broke kid that owned the animal prior to it being lost.. If you werent ready to see it through you should have probably left the dog alone..maybe it would have gone home. posted by

Are you sure about that Sioux? When I was looking for a small house dog they were all gone by the time I could get to either of the shelters. I had a heck of a time getting one. posted by

Nancy..any dog you take to the pound you are taking a major risk that they might fall through the cracks..what if no ones looking for a small dog that week etc etc..Like I said when people are trying to do good they can sometimes do just the opposite..If your not willing to go the extra mile dont pick the dog up..again hopefully it will go home or the family can find it driving around or going door to door..the dog might have also found some one that is willing to take care of it until its returned to its family the dog had a better chance being advertised from where it was found due to a neighbor recognizing the picture and telling the owner to go check it out..you send the dog all the way across town and you lose that advantage..Plus the family will have to pay fees for picking the dog up and sometimes that will stop them if they are living pay check to paycheck.. If our kids bring a dog in that is walking down the road..I send them out on a bike to check the neighborhood..if the dog is healthy you can bet it hasnt been out on the streets very long..If we have no luck then we make posters and plant them all over the area within a mile or two..hit the paper..then after a week if the owner doesnt show..which they usually will..I start calling friends to see if they have a relative that would like a new pup..I just don't have much faith in a dog survivng very long once it hits the pound unless its an exceptional dog that is very adoptable.... SORRY Nancy just care too much about dogs and kids I guess.......everyones different posted by

I went to the county facility, Spca, and Alpha Canine. That was about 3 years ago and I found Zack at the SPCA facility. I tried to reserve a small one at the pound but they said they couldn't do that. So far I adopted 2 from SPCA and 1 from the county shelter. posted by

Yes they did. The one I wanted had another day or so to go before being released for adoption. I told them I would come get it as soon as it was released as my working hours kept me from finding anything small. The said no so I don't know what happened to the little dog. Most likely adopted as it was a Pom. The other part to that answer is no..they didn't have any small available dogs. I worked Tues Thru Sat late afternoon and by the time I got off, all the small ones were gone. At that time SPCA was closed on Sats. It was freaky that I found Zack as he'd been available for about two weeks and no one wanted the hairball. I thought he was cute and adopted him. Alpha didn't have any small dogs either. posted by

Oh damn it. I am still dwelling on this. Thanks to all of you, I appreciate everything you have said. I will call the shelter on Thursday to see if it has been claimed. If not, I might have to go get it and try to find her a home, regardless of the darn expense. She was just TOO sweet! posted by

whats wrong with picking her up today..the longer you wait the less you will care about having put her in that predicament..pretty soon you will just sluff it off and tell yourself either she found a home or her family picked her up..but in the back of your mind you will always wonder and every time you see a chee wahh wahh from, now on you will think of that dog and feel bad you didn't do something..personally I couldn't live with the guilt..but again that's just me..If her family is going nuts they probably already checked the pound..I just don't trust she wouldn't get lost in the shuffle. unrelated story but an example,,when my oldest boy was young in the '80s we bought him a very expensive JMC racing bike..a xollwxtable today..He kept it in his room hanging from the ceiling ..he loved that bike..one day he went to the store and a big kid pushed him off and stole it..we had pictures serial numbers etc..gave it the the police dept..checked back for weeks on end..always the same answer..didn't find it..then one day my son walked down to look for himself and there it was..all locked up in the basement of the police station and had been for weeks. They had it because the kid that stole it also was caught in a burglary and told them it was his bike so they were holding it for him until he was released..can you believe that??..he was in Juvy and that's as far as they went with the bike..WE were just awe struck it had been down there so long with all the reports and contact info we had filed...IF he had not gone down to see for himself I'm fairley confident he would have never gotten it back.. Moral of this story..Don't listen to the person on the other end of the phone..go look for yourself if something is really important enough for you to find..ask your questions when you are down there so you can see it for yourself.. posted by

bakonative Any animal that shows up at KCAC is required (by State law) to be held for 96 hours (4 days) in hopes of reuniting it with the owner. So the dog has at least 4 days before action is taken. Rest assured that small dogs are the first to get homes. The largest dogs are hardest to place. Good Luck - you did the right thing. At least the pup is not dodging cars on the street. posted by

I recently lost a puppy to the county pound. My Queensland puppy got out of my yard through a gap in my fence. The neighbors told me that animal control had been in the neighborhood so I called there to see if they had her. I called for six hours and either the phone was busy or they wouldn't pick up. Since we hadn't planned on keeping her because she would turn into such a big dog, my husband decided it would be best to just leave her down there. She had a good chance of getting adopted since she was just a puppy and very cute. The next day I checked their website and she was on there. I couldn't leave her down there so again I called and finally got through. They told me they definitely had her; she'd been picked up in front of my house. I got down there about two hours later after I'd gotten off of work and they couldn't find her! I couldn't believe it. I was there for about an hour while they tried to figure out what had happened to the dog. Turns out that when the vet examined her, they put her age at about 6 weeks so she was picked up by a no-kill shelter. She was a stray my sister's friend had found so I didn't know how old she was. They gave me the contact information for the guy that took her and told me I could have her back if I wanted her if I paid the fees. I decided, instead, to contact Josh at the rescue shelter and told him that if he couldn't place the dog, I would take her back. Luckily she was adopted as soon as he made her available two weeks later. Long story short; I agree with Sioux. Don't trust the person on the phone. Go check yourself. And don't be surprised if they can't find the dog.
