"The Bakersfield irrelevant" should print this in their A section, or their editorial page, it would be their most informative news article published in weeks.

I just clicked on the Green Frog Market icon on Columbus St., where I shop. The picture that is displayed is of the Green Frog Market on Bernard St. Either show the correct store, or don't show a picture at all. Typical sloppy work...

Thanks for putting this together. Very informative! I've got to try the Indian grocery store on South real, which I had no idea even existed in town.

The Green Frog Market is still around, eh? I went there many times as a kid.

I worked at the one on Bernard, for awhile, when I attended B.C.

Is Shaky's Pizza still behind it, on Alta Vista?

No tonyh, Shakey's on Alta Vista is long gone. I grew up eating their pizza. My dad always ordered the combination with anchovy. YUM!!!!

OldBlue56...sound like you may have grown up on the same side of town as my ex.  I grew up in Fruitvale so the east side was a vast frontier for me.

Shakeys now has a store on White Lane by WM and they have a really good lunch buffet.  Gotta love those MoJos.. potato logs just can't compare.

The Mojos are classic. I have yet to taste any fried potatoes that compare.

Nancy, I never really knew there was a part of Bako west of 99, except West High, until 1976. I grew up on the east side, have lived in the NW and SW, but always ended up back on my original side of town, like now. I love the breeze and the foothills.

You sound like you're a bit younger than my ex.  He grew up around Hillcrest and graduated East High in 1957 I think. All 3 of my bestest buddies (including me) married East High hoodlums.  At least that's what we wanted to believe they were.  Duck tail haircuts and all.

Old Blue56- Thanks for letting us know about the incorrect photo. I have updated the image and let me know if it is still inaccurate.

I have also added some new markets from user submissions. If you have any others, please let us know!

There ya go Baketown!!  Brilliant idea!

There used to be two grocery stores in the downtown area.  Fikes 18th Street (?) and one on the corner of F Street next to the old Coronet building (Now CRS).  There must be some reason they left.  Fikes was an upper scale market with a great deli, Smiths Bakery, and meat counter.  The one on F street seemed to be more of a produce store if I remember right.

Back in the day, *ahem..quite a few days.)  there was a Mayfair Market on F Street and later Vincents Market where Smart and Final is today.  Mayfair had a lunch counter and I think Vincents had a snack bar.
