Taft's big tourism hope

According to a story on San Luis Obispo.com, Kern County and Taft in particular will reap the biggest windfall in tourism dollars should the Carrizo Plain National Monument be developed into a bigger tourist attraction.

Taft is the closest city to the monument. Taft itself doesn't have much in the way of tourist attractions. Taft does have Ollie's. Ollie's serves a great burger.

Just found out that Ollie's is closed and has 'For Sale' sign on it.

Poor Taft.

Taft? Wow!!

Aww come'on folks.  Taft is actually a nice little town.  It's the drive to get there that's a booger bear.  Tourism though..I do get a chuckle out of that.  What about McKittrick..at least they have the penny bar.

That's what made me giggle, the tourism part, it's not even big enough to tour.

The Oil Museum is an attraction though.  Maybe they can cap on that.  :-)

Nancy, wasn't that bar moved to Pioneer Village?  Or am I thinking of something else?

RF..not to my knowledge.  The bar/hotel has been for sale for a while now.  If you google it, it comes up in they NY Times and the Denver Post.   If I remember right the asking price was something like $899,999.99.  Pretty funny.  :-)

edited.  Someone from the local media did a little road trip out there last year.  Weren't they from TBC?

Think I mixed it up with the Fellows Hotel.

RF..you're right about the Fellows Hotel.  It was open last year at the Lamplighter Tour and we got to go through it.  Pretty creepy upstairs...lol.

For those of you who haven't been to the Penny Bar you really need to go.  It's a sight to see.

Oh yeah...the penny bar. That was on Huell Howser! That's the only reason I've ever heard about it before. Never been there.

I hate going out to Taft every week. In fact, I need to drive out there again tomorrow or Friday to take my dang math test. Ugh. When I drive through it, it always looks like crap. I haven't really stopped anywhere in the town except the college and the bookstore, though. It's possible that I've been to different places in Taft throughout my childhood, but I don't remember them. The only other place I can recall that I've been to in Taft is the Taft Theatre every year before Christmas -- thanks to RBG and its strange field trips.

I used to buy lunch for my customers @ the Restaurant  would go into the bar to use the restroom and pay my bill

I was amazed @ the penny's  every time I went in there  (their)    for O/B

they did serve a great lunch    sometimes I would give out my business card and sign it   who ever had the card received a lunch on me   we worked good together
