There's a man on the phone asking about the frogs

We got a call a few minutes ago from a gentleman in Tucson, Arizona.

He said he had been watching the news this morning and had seen a story out of Bakersfield about an invasion of frogs. He said something along the lines of, 'they were marching through neighborhoods, taking over gardens and homes.'

The religious extremists would tell you that someone high up wasn't too thrilled about the gay marriage ruling yesterday, but plagues are so BC.

We had no idea what he was talking about until staffer Steve Swenson remembered he had seen something on a local TV station.

Here's the story.

And while we're on the subject, all you ritzy Rosedalians who were planning on eating the appendages from said frogs, keep this Florida story in mind.

One of my favorite childhood memories involved a "invasion" of frogs~ but mine were cute little baby frogs about 1 1/2 long. They seemed to naturally thin out over the weeks and we had an end to the "invasion". Frogs, cute, croaky, green insect eaters what's not to like?

This Rosedalian only has one frog in my yard.  A huge one that has probably eaten all the rest of it's kind.

My chihuahua won't leave it alone.

There were two Frenchmen looking at treadmills at the Visalia Sears on Wednesday. One said, "Bonjour."

Betcha they headed down to Bakersfield. They must be part of the "invasion of frogs" the gentleman referred to...

LOL

I haven't heard that term for awhile.

Reminds me of Monty Python !

Little frogs are cute. But bullfrogs are good eating as most of us raised with really fine cuisine can testify.

Sam

My husband and I were talking about eating frog legs the other day.  Isn't the skin on a frog (toad) poisonous?  Do you have to skin the legs before they're cooked.

I appreciate a good frog story. And even more so a guy from Arizona that just needs to know more!

I think they're adorable!  My one year old loves them, too.  He bounces up and down, says "Hop!" and points to the front door to ask me to take him out front to look at them.  The birds seem pretty happy about the buffet, also.  I remember seeing them in years past, but not this many.  I think they're toads, though, and not frogs.

Audrey, bullfrogs are skinned before frying. We used to get them by the gunny sack from the canals in Bakersfield. The largest I ever got here in the Kern River Valley weighed two and one-half pounds.

There are thousands of baby frogs on my street in Rosedale. I have never seen anything like it. Of course, the kids love it.

posted by AudreyB on May 16, 2008 at 09:27 AM

2 1/2 pounds!  That's as big as some chickens.

posted by samheath on May 16, 2008 at 09:29 AM

Those tiny frogs are cuter than a bug's ear. As a p.s. to frying the large bullfrogs we would pull the tendons to keep the legs from jerking and splattering grease.

There is one bullfrog that lives in a pond at CSUB that's absolutely massive. It made such a splash into the water it scared me half to death the first time I saw it! It could quite possibly be just as heavy as the 2 1/2 pounder described above.

When I was knee high to a grasshopper living in Oregon I used to catch big old bull frogs and I would bring the legs home and my Mother would fry them up for me. No one Else would eat them but I would eat em up..................Times like this makes me wish that I was still a snot nosed kid again..................

Growing up I remember seeing a lot of little frogs around this time of year, especially at school.  This doesn't seem to be anything new.

I just wanna say, wasn't my grandson cute?  It was my son and daughter in law that brought that bizarre yet fun story to the news.   In these times of so much tragedy and crime it was nice to see a fun and light hearted story hit the news cast.

That it is pawz. Of course the frogs have done this many times but what got my attention was catching the name "Bakersfield" as a sidebar on the national news, I think CNN. So I expected the local stations to make a big deal of it. Nope. But then here in the Kern River Valley we are used to the local media ignoring us except here lately because of the dam, but for them to ignore national attention on Bakersfield's frog invasion was inexcusable! Maybe an ingrained prejudice against frogs; we know it isn't easy being green. The local media never did pay any attention to my scheme for bronzed bullfrogs.

I caught those; I just thought they should have had more on it. I love animal stories.

posted by sagefever on May 16, 2008 at 07:28 PM

Frog gigging(sp?)~ and quite right, cut those tendons, good eats! But I wonder if "our" frogs are any safer to eat now than those in the Everglades??

posted by samheath on May 17, 2008 at 04:55 AM

Good question sagefever; I'd trust those here in the Kern River Valley because of the lack of pollution but I'm not sure about elsewhere in CA.
