Gay marriage day: What will it be like?

This time tomorrow gay couples will be picking up their marriage licenses at the county clerk's office.

Or will Ann Barnett's employees call in sick?

As much as gay couples and supporters would hope, it's not going to be a normal day. The media circus (us included) will be there too. One would imagine there will be protesters. And perhaps a police presence to make sure everything runs smoothly.

Any predictions?

"Media circus" complete with clowns.  That about covers it.

No prediction from me, only concerns.   One of two things will happen:

Either (1) Ann Barnett will issue the first same-sex couple marriage licenses as she has promised, the couples will get married,  the reporters will file their stories and broadcast their videos, everyone will forget about the hubub and move on to other matters, and things will go back to normal.

Or, (2) Ann Barnett will refuse to issue licenses to same-sex couples (or maybe not issue licenses at all), and all hell will break loose.

No one really knows what Ms. Barnett will do, other than Ms. Barnett and the people at Alliance Defense Fund.  Remember that last Friday she fired the County Counsel's office, which means they can no longer give her legal advice on the matter.

I am hoping that things will go smoothly and that I will be able to say "Congratulations" to the happy couples.  But just in case, I'm bringing a bunch of blank Kern County Grand Jury Complaint Forms with me.

The sun will raise, couples well go to the county and get their marriage license and then will have civil ceremonies performed by local ministers. This is a time of happiness as marriage equailty is obtain for all people of CA.

What sf said.  Wish I could be there myself--I know slightly one of the couple mentioned in the article yesterday--and had no idea he was gay.

posted by justwondering on Jun 16, 2008 at 11:18 AM

People will get married and life will go on.  Who wants to be married by someone that doesn't want to marry them anyway?

Barnett is old and she will retire.

And the threatening, apparently sinless, Chad Vegas will realize gluttony is also a sin.

And only then, there will be separation of the church and state.

The hallway at the Kern County building will be a circus come tomorrow.  Will never be the same.  Be sure to bring all your treats, soda, popcorn, candy ,smokes, for the circus will be an all day event.

What a joke. The entire issue is ridiculous...one step closer to socialism and a huge step away from the foundation of our country...so the government in California wants us to tell our children to educate themselves to be self sufficient adults, follow the rules, study the bible, attend church, pay taxes and oh...learn to accept same sex marriage....JOKE!!!!

posted by gopherbro on Jun 16, 2008 at 05:44 PM

Sorry, angbish, but the last thing the Government of California would tell you to do is "study the bible" and "attend church". The Constitution requires that the Government remain neutral on the subject.  If you want to study the bible and attend church, you gotta do it on your own.

THE TWO CALIFORNIAS

This is how the Sonoma County Clerk is handling gay marriages:

Janice Atkinson, the Sonoma County clerk, said her office was planning to stay open late for the rest of the month to accommodate what she expected would be a heavy load of same-sex weddings. On Sunday, Ms. Atkinson and staff members attended a gay pride celebration in Sonoma to hand out applications for marriage licenses to prospective newlyweds.

“We’re expecting some very happy couples,” she said. “And a lot of media.”

Sorry Gopherbro you misunderstood what I was saying....how does the governement remain neutral when its leaders take oath on the bible? Anyway, you dont understand what I was saying.....

posted by gopherbro on Jun 16, 2008 at 06:53 PM

Ahh, angbish, you probably don't know, but oaths don't have to be taken on the bible.  You can take the Constitutional oath on a bible if you want, and for many it is traditional, but it is not required.  You don't have to take the oath on any book, and if you want to take it on a book, you can take it on a copy of Harry Potter for all the law cares.

In fact, the oath set forth in the Constitution of the State of California doesn't mention God at all!   Here is the oath of office from article 20 of the California Constitution:

"I, ______, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support
and defend the Constitution of the United States and the Consti-
tution of the State of California against all enemies, foreign
and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the
Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the
State of California; that I take this obligation freely, without

any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will
well and faithfully discharge the duties upon which I am about
     to enter.
"And I do further swear (or affirm) that I do not advocate,
nor
am I a member of any party or organization, political or other-
wise, that now advocates the overthrow of the Government of the
United States or of the State of California by force or violence

or other unlawful means; that within the five years immediately
preceding the taking of this oath (or affirmation) I have not
been a member of any party or organization, political or other-
wise, that advocated the overthrow of the Government of the
United States or of the State of California by force or violence

or other unlawful means except as follows:
     _________________________________________________ _______________

(If no affiliations, write in the words "No Exceptions")
and that during such time as I hold the office of ______________

________________________________ I will not advocate nor become
        & nbsp;    (name of office)
a member of any party or organization, political or otherwise,
that advocates the overthrow of the Government of the United
States or of the State of California by force or violence or
     other unlawful means."

where are we taught in school to study the bible and attend church to be good citizens and good people? What I learned was math, english, history, civics in high school. Religion has no place in school other than to be taught from a historical point of view and then it should be all religions.

Equality for All includes gays.

posted by CALLMEMSTRACY on Jun 16, 2008 at 07:48 PM

Although I do not condone homosexuality, the gay community has as much right to wed each other as straight people do.  We have the right to marry whom ever we want!  Homosexuals; right or wrong, should have as much right to marry one another just as staright people do.

If two people can be joined together in marriage and be truly happy, more power to them.

posted by oldblue57 on Jun 16, 2008 at 08:44 PM

If same sex marriages are acceptable then multiple person marriages, pedophila marriages, animal marriages and plant and tree marriages under climate change are surely to follow!

posted by randomfactor on Jun 16, 2008 at 08:56 PM

If heterosexual marriages are acceptable  then multiple person marriages, pedophila marriages, animal marriages and plant and tree marriages under climate change are surely to follow, just as long as "bride" and "groom"  are of opposite sexes.  We must ban *ALL* marriages to be really sure, oldblue.

RF, I think I remember that argument: http://www.vtfreetomarry.or...

“[If interracial couples have a right to marry], all our marriage acts forbidding intermarriage between persons within certain degrees of consanguinity are void.”
(Source: Perez v. Lippold, 198 P.2d at 40 (Shenk, J., dissenting, quoting from a prior court case))

“The underlying factors that constitute justification for laws against miscegenation closely parallel those which sustain the validity of prohibitions against incest and incestuous marriages.”
(Source: Perez v. Lippold, 198 P.2d at 46 (Shenk, J., dissenting, quoting from a prior court case))

“[T]he State's prohibition of interracial marriage . . . stands on the same footing as the prohibition of polygamous marriage, or incestuous marriage, or the prescription of minimum ages at which people may marry, and the prevention of the marriage of people who are mentally incompetent.”
(Source: Excerpted United States Supreme Court oral argument transcripts from Loving v. Virginia, from Peter Irons and Stephanie Guitton, eds., May it Please the Court (1993) at 282-283, quoting Virginia Assistant Attorney General R. D. McIlwaine, arguing for Virginia's ban on interracial marriage)

What time do the festivities start?

Oldblue, why shouldn't there mutiple partner marriages? It won't effect my life at all. Who cares? As far as, pedophilia marriages and animal marriages, that just can NEVER HAPPEN! Marriage is a CONTRACT between legal age people. Animals CANNOT read or write, so they can't sign a contract! Don't be ignorant. Come up with a better argument then that.

All these religious bigots need to put down the bible and pick up the Constitution! Anybody who wants to get married tomorrow, I'll be there and will do Ann Barnett's job and marry anybody with a marriage license. I'm an ordained minister.

mtndewrob, if they'd pick up the Bible, they wouldn't have a problem with polygyny

What will happen today is Kern County will start to lose needed tax revenue. Many people will see Kern County as a backward thinking, intolerant, mean spirited area to be avoided.

Ann Barnett is obviously doing anything she can to make it difficult for anyone to marry in Kern County. She is fiscally irresponsible because her action will cause persons to marry in other counties depriving the wedding businesses in Kern County of needed revenue. Her actions will also result in a loss of tourism, convention and trade show business and revenue as many people won't want to do business in a county who's Auditor-Controller is obviously trying to discriminate against LGBT persons. Shame on Ann Barnett  and shame on Kern County for allowing her to take the actions she did.

Ms. Barnett, you know your fuzzy math claiming marriages are a loss for Kern County just is not true. Shame on you for being such a poor example of a Christian. Jesus does not like you to lie.....

I for one am going to Boycott Kern County!

I'm going to be there with an extremely large picket sign reading, "Same-Sex Marriage Is Natural...Opposite-Sex Marriage Is An Abomination."  LOLOLOLOL  Watch the right-wing stuff shirts in town go crazy and maybe take out their shotguns.

But seriously, it's probably going to be a circus downtown and we will see what Kern County is STILL about...discrimination at it's finest.  Bakersfield overall is so behind.  Get a clue.  Gay marriages are here to stay whether you like it or not...regardless of what happens in November.  This issue will NEVER go away until it is nationally recognized.
