Solving the overcrowded animal shelter problem
Here's a novel way to clear out the overcrowded animal shelters in Bakersfield and elsewhere. All pound dogs and cats are tax deductible. Not only the purchase of the animal, but every bag of food, every trip to the vet, every collar and bowl. Just keep your receipts. The only stipulation is you must agree to have your pet and its living arrangements checked (on an unannounced visit) four times a year (to make sure you're not trying to scam the system). Great idea, right? 9 comments from 5 users

I'm not sure I dig the idea of pets being used as tax shelters. Pets are living, breathing, feeling, thinking creatures and should only go into homes where are they are wanted and respected in their own right. One of the reasons so many pets end up in shelters in the first place is because people don't clearly think through what keeping a pet involves over the course of the animal's life in terms of time, attention, food and care. Putting the idea into people's heads that pets can be a convenient way to help dodge the tax man would be bound to create bad situations.

I'd feel guilty writing off my pets' expenses on my taxes, anyway. Through the years, they've all been worth any and all amounts that I had to spend on them. I've never got one from the pound, though. They show up, I feed them, they stick around and become family, and I take them to the vet. posted by
