14 and pregnant
Bakersfield.com blogger meandpete has posted a very personal story about her 14-year-old daughter who is due to give birth in October. Read how she's coping and comments from fellow bloggers. Perhaps she can find solace in Mas magazine's latest cover story, about a local woman who got pregnant at 14. Now, at age 23, she is not only a mother but also a successful student at CSUB and recently had the starring role in the school's production of the musical "Evita." In both stories, the girls' mothers play an important role in their support and say that kicking out their daughters was the last thing they would have done. Age 14 may be young to become a mother, but these families show that with love and support, it can be done. 5 comments from 4 users

on teen pregnancy in pop culture. Between the movie Juno, the real-life Jamie Lynn Spears, and two new TV shows "Secret Life of an American Teenager" and "Baby Borrowers," it seems teen pregnancy is IN. posted by

I was 32 when my 15 yr old daughter told me she was pregnant, and truthfully I was'nt happy about it, her life as she knew it was now over. I was 17 when she was born so I knew what a change this would be for her, my heart hurt because I knew she was about to grow up way too soon. But I was there, you dont turn your back on your child because they make a mistake, even one that would change their life so drastically. She has done a good job for being so young, that was almost 17 years ago, there are 3 more besides that one. My grandaughter has lived with me since she was 11, and we have very open discussions on the topic of pregnancy. She knows how hard it's been for her mom, and she does'nt want to end up the same. Recently she asked me to put her on the pill and even though shes not sexually active yet, this tells me that she has listened to me and wants to be protected when that day comes, she also carries condoms in her purse[ just in case] shes also protecting herself from std. IM VERY PROUD OF HER and I hope her 2 sisters will follow her example. posted by

I hope my daughter never becomes pregnant as a teenager. I guess all I can do is make sure she understands how I feel about it. I really don't understand the rationalization that some people have that tells them that having a baby you cannot care for is okay, but abortion is wrong. I will tell my daughter just the opposite. I will also make her understand that I will not be taking care of any kids she has. I find people will create the NEED for a safety net if they know they have one. posted by

Jbaldwin Childhood pregnancy was never IN at my house. There's no way I would have encouraged my daughter to ruin her life by having a baby at 14. What's the point in compounding one mistake with another. We're not talking boo boo's here. After the first blog came out my daughter and I talked about teen pregnancy. She said she would not have wanted to have a child at that age. That's why we have the woman's right to choose. But, to each their own.
