bakosphere - > Bakosphere -> A $7 beer and Bakersfield's cost-of-living illusion
A $7 beer and Bakersfield's cost-of-living illusion

I paid $7 for a Guinness last night at the Tilted Kilt. That in itself should go down as one of the greatest crimes this city has ever witnessed.

But it was more than that. It was more evidence that, accommodations aside, it's no cheaper to live here than it is San Francisco, or L.A. or San Diego. Our cheap cost of living is mostly an illusion.

We pay the same gas prices as the bigger cities to the north and south. Eating out costs about the same, as does filling up the grocery cart. And in all my statewide travels I don't think I've paid $7 for a draft beer unless it was in a ritzy nightclub.

I'm not blaming the Kilt and it's tattooed and moley legion of workers. It seems a nice enough place and it was busy on a Sunday night so its obviously doing something right. They were showing the Olympics on one of their many nice TVs and most of the male clientele appeared interested in the global events of the night.

I am sure that is their justification for the scantily clad girls.

At prices like that, I'd reexamine my lifestyle and priorities.

number 1 guinness sucks and anybody who pays for that crap is looney. number 2 I would rather pay 7 bucks for a beer if a nice looking under dressed woman would bring it to me then have to walk to a counter and see Debra the snaggle tooth he-she pour one while I have to stand there and star at her linebacker beer belly frame from behind to save 3 bucks...............excuse me I have to go puke now.

I enjoy a nice half and half now and again.$7.00 seems a bit steep who ever is pouring. How was the food?

My sister went to the Tilted Kilt saturday night.  She said the chicks are more scantily clad that at Hooters (she also goes to Hooters?  God!)  Anyway, she said she HAD to leave when one of the drunker male patrons kept calling his waitress a broad.  I asked her what did she expect?  It seemed everyone there except her knew what the place was about (half-naked chicks with implants getting higher-than-usual tips from drunken louts.)  To those people it's a win-win.  To my sister it was a disappointment.  Duh!

sage,

food was average. onion rings not that crispy, but buffalo chicken tenders were tasty (as were the accompanying fries). as you can see, the food was chosen to complement the beer!

I paid $7.50 for a Bloody Mary at LAX in 2002. No scantily clad women, just a pudgy bald guy in his 50s behind the bar.

My dad bought a six-pack of Guinness for St. Pat's Day about 20 years ago. GoBlue is right - the stuff, like, sucks. It tasted like it had sand in it. Dad said that across the pond they drink it at room temperature.

Thanks for the info~ I am "of an age" where whoever is serving me is of little import, and having seen and heard my fair share of drunks, that matters little....but the state of onion rings? that matters! Unless Brad Pitt is serving of course. ;-P

The mistake most people make in judging the cost of living in a given area is to use housing as a yardstick.  Everyone told me how cheap it was to live in TN but I paid the same for rent and while some grocery items were cheaper, the ones I used a lot were higher.  Beef and milk were much higher for instance while chicken and pork were reasonable.

If you go to a Hooters here or LA or other places It's probably the same cost.  Gas in the midwest is cheaper bur so are the wages.  It's a trade off.

Beer?  No thinks.  I wouldn't pay 3 bucks for one let alone 7.  Ya gotta just love beer to do that.  7 bucks would buy me almost two cases of Shasta soda.  :-)

I agree with Groucho Marks.  If I want to see someone's hooters, I'll just stand bare chested in front of a mirror.   :-)

Sage, I'll call Brad this afternoon and tell him to come over to your place with an order of onion rings from Burger King. He won't be wearing a shirt, of course; not in this hot weather.

Make sure that Mr. Sage, like, goes to the store or something before Brad gets there...

Johnburnssucks - they do drink it room temp - tastes better ;)  Maybe it's the Irish/English in me, but I'm always up for a pint of Guiness - but only one, the bloat is awful!

posted by ProgressivePete2 on Aug 18, 2008 at 10:14 AM

I like the Guiness Draught the best. I usually let it warm up a bit before drinking it. If you keep the cans warm though, you'll have a big mess on your hands. By far the best use for a Guiness is either as the liquid in some sort of beef stew or meat pie, or in an Irish Car Bomb cocktail.

Murphy's Stout is better.

JBS~ Mr Sage and I have an understanding in regards to Brad and Pamela,lol.... I just thought, what I like to drink they call it a Black and Tan not a half and half...can't take me anywhere!

When my father use to take his son's to the Renegades game years ago...rule #1 was to take your own bottle to keep warm...the same holds true to this day when my brother and I go to the games...but 7 bucks...brings a whole new meaning to the word 'being raped'...that is just insane....go back to rule #1.....

When I lived in Wyoming, it was supposed to be 20% cheaper to live than Bakersfield. Housing was slightly cheaper there as was fuel.

Everything else was the same.

posted by Shwaine on Aug 18, 2008 at 12:52 PM

Eating out and gassing up your SUV are luxuries. We are cheaper when it comes to housing and basic groceries. I should know, I lived 6 years up in Northern California for graduate school before coming back here. I was able to rent a two bedroom place for about the same rent as the 1 bedroom place I had up north. Even the same grocery chain (Vons/Safeway) had cheaper prices here than in Northern California.

posted by bakonative on Aug 18, 2008 at 01:03 PM

How big was that Guinness?  I mean, was it in a small or large mug? $7 is pricey, I hope it was a large mug for that price! I have paid $6 for a beer at sporting events, but at least you expect that when you go to one.

My husband went to Tilted Kilt last week, he had the shephard's pie and said it was good, but they weren't hiring the waitress for their skills in serving!

Schwaine, I heard years ago that grocery stores price their goods based on location - Northern Ca., Central Ca., Southern Ca., probably based on income median for each area.

posted by NancyII on Aug 18, 2008 at 01:32 PM

Back in the 90's Kroeger in TN (which was the same as Vons) had very similar prices as here and trust me, the incomes back there didn't touch the ones in CA.  I can't speak for all over CA since the only two places I"ve lived here are Tehachapi and Baks and Tehachapi used to be considerably higher in food costs.

Ling, #1 thing to remember is that alcohol doesn't warm you up, it just makes you think you're warm.  Of course it makes you think a lot of things that aren't true.  :-)

ps..with enough of it, it can also make you forget which team you're cheering for.

I work at Azul downtown and I believe ( I don't serve them alot) our big Guiness is $6, might be $5.  Like I said, I don't get alot of people ordering it.  Most of our beers are $3 to $4, but our big big beers are $6, no more!  Sorry, had to throw in Azul and show off.  Lounge hours are nice (aka dinner hours) to kick back and chill until about 9:30pm, 10pm.  The club doesn't open until after 10pm, so its not so noisy.  And I'm not scantily clad, sorry!  I have dignity when serving beers :)

Years ago, we use to sell a black and tan ( half pear cider and half Guinness ) for 4.50/glass...I thought THAT was crazy...but talk about GOOOOOOD.....use to have one of those when the place was closed and was doing the books...then it was time for 'uno mas' and kick back and listen to music with the doors locked and relax....

It's good being King.....

bakonative,

regular glass (i'm thinking a pint).

posted by ProgressivePete2 on Aug 18, 2008 at 02:17 PM

Pear cider in a black & tan?  Ewwwwwww. You're supposed to use Guiness or Murphy's and Bass or some other type of ale. I can't stand cider, no matter what you make it from. I'm grossed out by the thought of it. YUK!

Bakosphere - wonder how much they charge for WATER?????

posted by TomW on Aug 18, 2008 at 10:40 PM

Pete, with cider it's called a snakebite.  Good stuff.

I also agree that Murphy's is way better.  If you're up for a good dessert stout, Young's double chocolate stout is great.

Murphy's is $1.25 a can at Trader Joe's ($9.99 for an 8 pack). Best I ever paid was $0.25 a can, for a few weeks years back when someone at Albertson's corporate office thought they had too much in stock. I went from store to store over a few evenings, buying as much as I could (getting funny looks from the cashiers- first because I was pushing shopping carts full of beer, then when they rung it up and saw the price). One of the happiest months of my life.

Irish carbombs are the bane of my existence. Nothing should make quickly consumed Irish whisky taste that good, least of all more alcohol.

When my dad came back from a trip to Ireland, he couldn't stop talking about how good the Guinness is there. I didn't believe him, until last summer. We were in Seattle and stopped at an Irish pub for lunch. Their menu bragged about how much they'd spent on their Guinness tap system (something >$10,000), and how good theirs tasted. Well, never one to pass up a claim of better beer, I had one. Then I passed it to the Old Man, and asked his opinion. He tasted it, looked at it, and said "that's the closest thing to what they serve in Ireland." It. Was. Amazing. I understand now why they call it "Mother's Milk" (because kids grow up drinking it). That is a Guinness I wouldn't mind paying $7 for (although if memory serves it was closer to $5).

If I'm paying $7 for a beer, I not only expect the waitress to serve me topless, I expect her nipples to dispense my drink.

Best line ever read in the Bakosphere comments section:

"If I'm paying $7 for a beer, I not only expect the waitress to serve me topless, I expect her nipples to dispense my drink."

Thanks Mattloch

Mattloch, you do go for the Jameson right? I've had some good Bushmills, but I'm a big ol sucker for the Jameson. Actually for the Irish Carbombs I prefer Jameson and Carolans. Dang, I'm going to have to have one or 7 tonight!
