Say goodbye to fun weather

His wikipedia page says he was fired, but whacky local weatherman Lloyd Lindsay Young says that's not true.

It's just that Tuesday was his last day.

Regardless, Lloyd has left the KERO building and taken his dildo pointer with him.

GOOOOOOOOOOD BYEEEEEEEEEEE LLLLOOOOOOOYYYYYYDDDDDDD!

Here's a story we wrote about Lloyd a couple of years ago.

"Dildo Pointer" ..... *scratch my head*.....*Huh ?* ..... until I read the Wiki entry.... I must have missed the forecast that night.... hopefully night... late night !!

posted by bonuschris on Sep 16, 2008 at 10:16 PM

Thank God and Greyhound, he was hands downs the worst TV journalist (I use that term in the loosest sense) in Bakersfield. I will actually be able to watch KERO again.

posted by JustAThought on Sep 16, 2008 at 10:28 PM

Lloyd announced at the end of the broadcast that he will be moving to a station in Sacramento.

At first he irritated me but then he began to grow on me. I will actually miss my nightly laugh I had while watching him perform the weather.

Good Luck Lloyd.....

I wish him luck also but I thought his son was much better.  Now I too can watch that station.  He's the reason I couldn't.

Aww, I'm going to miss him and the humor he brought to KERO. Good luck LLOYD!

I always thought he was mildly retarded.

THANK GOODNESS! I'm so glad to see him leave. Didn't he understand that so many people hated his little "act" every night? I'll finally be able to watch 23 again! That's nice, because a bunch of my favorite shows are on ABC and I won't have to switch the channel whenever I see his face.

Ahhhh, good bye Lloyd! I loved ya while I hated ya!

posted by vanityfair on Sep 16, 2008 at 11:25 PM

And ya'll wonder why people don't run for office, and this was just the weather guy.

As an old school radio guy myself,  I'm gonna miss Lloyd. He's one of the great and Grand Old Men of broadcasting. I love ya Lloyd and I send you my best.

BTW the "dildo" comment was uncalled for.

This was too small of a market for someone like LL Young.  There was nothing wrong with his style of weather reporting,  he was just in the wrong place.

posted by Sooz58 on Sep 17, 2008 at 06:51 AM

From his crazy lingo "thunderbumbers" , "Sacratomato" to "Moooooooooojave" Lloyd made us all smile. He certainly had character I can say that much about him. We need more characters in the boring old news rooms is my opinion. The news is bad and depressing enough without adding stone faced lackluster announcers. I looked forward to his wacky talk, creative pointers and viewer pic's on the nightly news and truly am going to miss him.

Now he'll have a little more weather to announce in Sacratomato ... maybe even some rain.

posted by adampayne on Sep 17, 2008 at 07:49 AM

I first watched Lloyd in Sacramento in the 1990s on one of their local UHF stations. He has always had the booming radio voice delivery but his weathercasts were pretty  much confined to the malapropisms and the weather. I don't think he has a gig lined up in Sack-town, but will be moving back to a city where he is more comfortable. I wish him the best.

I will miss Lloyd.  You're right!  This town was too small (minded) for him.  What do you expect where the demographics show an average reading level of 8th grade.  Good luck Lloyd!

posted by casooner90 on Sep 17, 2008 at 09:33 AM

I never cared for a comic routine with my weather.  I just want the news, weather & sports.  If I want comic, I'll turn to a comedy channel.  I can't tell you how many times I jumped for the remote whenever he came on. I like others on 23, but Lloyd really was an annoyance.  Sorry, but you made your self larger than the weather you were suppose to report so you deserve this honest feedback.

This goes to show you the ability of station management to run a TV station.  Absolutely the worst and they knew it and continued!  Welcome to BACKWARDSFIELD

SENSORY OVERLOAD is the only way to describe him. Some people like it, some don't. He always seemed to LOVE his job. Not many people can say that. Good luck to you LLY

posted by Btowntv007 on Sep 17, 2008 at 10:01 AM

Thank goodness, I think this guy was borderline retarded.  And I mean that in a nice way.

posted by johnbravo6 on Sep 17, 2008 at 10:06 AM

I saw him at the tire store. He was normal there?

What do you expect where the demographics show an average reading level of 8th grade.  Good luck Lloyd!

Are they really that high? They must have missed some neighborhoods, or the worst one's couldn't read at all to answer the survey.

posted by nlbelardes on Sep 17, 2008 at 10:09 AM

Lloyd was one of the nicest people at ABC23. He would come into my fishbowl office and rant and rave about the weather. He genuinely cared and would often go and fight to get cooling centers open. He always said, "People love me or hate me. There's no in between."

He helped a kid I knew with a school project and I really appreciated that.

I know why he left. And it wasn't because he doesn't like Bakersfield or was fired. I wish him luck through difficult times.

The reason I quit watching 23 years ago.  Bakersfield 'Backwardsfield'?  What makes me 'backwards' if I don't want the weather reported by a clown in a business suit.  Thankfully we were included in a phone survey that addressed the 'problem'.

At first, He annoyed me, but like others have said, he did grow on me! You can't help but like him and his happy self!

Good Luck Lloyd, Bakersfield will miss you.

posted by Helga3412 on Sep 17, 2008 at 11:58 AM

We used to watch Lloyd also when he was in Sacramento.  Too bad he is leaving.    Listen to KGO radio and you can hear him, he does the weather for them.   I think his departure means no reason to watch Ch.8, they have so many technical problems, it is annoying.

posted by joofa1 on Sep 17, 2008 at 12:02 PM

I had sent a letter to the station early last year about this knucklehead and his dumbed-down reports (I wish I kept it).  The manager wrote back and identified that I am only one of an elite few who despised this man's reporting schtick.  I'm glad to see that I'M NOT the minority.  Stand up for yourself, Bakersfield!!  There's plenty other yahoo's that should probably go as well.  This isn't a small town anymore, but the News still makes it feel like it is.

Lloyd Lindsay Young ~ I wish you and your family peace and happiness in all that you do.  God Bless You!

posted by jeridecker on Sep 17, 2008 at 01:09 PM

I love Lloyd!  Simple as that, love his cheer and jokes especially in the summer.  What else are you going to say about our summer weather except "hot."  I will miss him and I will start watching the other two channels for my news and weather.

posted by kipaki on Sep 17, 2008 at 01:18 PM

While originally abrasive, I grew to appreciate his humor and talent.  In fact, I now tuned in to watch him.  God speed.

We loved Llyod and his crazy weather pointers. Our family will greatly miss you. Good luck in all your endeavors. Our loss is Sacramento's gain!

It's always weird to me when news readers become the news.

George was awesome. He brought humor to boring weather here in BACKWARDSFIELD. The Noise Factor herby grant the "JACKASS of the WEEK AWARD " to ABC23. Geeze maybe will get another pencil neck geek like Miles "Smouzzio" to do the weather on 23. BORING! This is the same reason that Johnny Carson was hated in NECKERSFIELD. SMALL MINDED.Good luck George.

I'll miss LLY. He is really the sweetest man. What you see is what you get and that was awesome. Don't meet a lot of TV personalities like that. I don't understand why people are so critical. As a TV personality, he is definitely entertaining. He knew people would either love or hate him... no in-betweens...and he was okay with that. People tuned in... he kept your attention whether you wanted to give it or not.

Lloyd will be great in whatever he decides to pursue. My heart and prayers will travel with you... Keep up your great work! Bakersfield is losing a genuine icon.

Finally I can watch Channel 23 again.   I wore out my remote control changing channels, and/or throwing it at the TV whenever he came on.  I'm surprised he lasted as long as he did, considering you could see the irritation in his co-workers eyes whenever they had to sit thru his weather reports.

posted by DeeGee on Sep 18, 2008 at 01:32 AM

Don't let the door hit your nutjob butt on the way out, Lloyd.

Now Channel 23 needs to nuke their awful set. Easily the ugliest design in local news.

Yeah, that makes no sense. You claim we're all no smarter than an 8th grader, but you don't mind Bako having a mentally retared person doing the weather. Make up your mind.

Couldn't have happened soon enough for me.  Now I'll be able to watch the National news from start to finish because I won't have to remember to switch the channels.

posted by lhenderson22 on Sep 18, 2008 at 10:33 AM

He annoyed me...and I couldn't stand to watch the weather on that channel....

posted by DeeGee on Sep 18, 2008 at 04:06 PM

Now if that isn't a retard, I don't know who is.

Btowntv- I almost spit my coffee out.  Your comment was too funny!!!!

posted by DeeGee on Sep 18, 2008 at 07:50 PM

Gube,

I think that God will get the station manager at Channel 23 for using a retard for the sake of drawing in viewers. That was no different than what you used to see at the carnival road shows with their freaks on display.

I haven't had a chance to watch tv in several months ... with LLY gone the news is going to be back to its boring self. We lost a really nice guy. Why do we all want to see people as miserable as everyone else? I think it's refreshing to see someone who is nice and happy.

posted by 7980bakersfield on Mar 10, 2009 at 06:23 AM

All I can say is that with all the negative commentary and images so often associated with the news. It was great to have a personality that was willing to bring alittle wacky humor to break up the heaviness we sometimes felt watching the madness unfold everyday. Thank you Lloyd Lindsey Young for your service to our community.
