Scariest school in America: West High, 1992
"My classes were populated with gang members and students wearing state-mandated ankle bracelets; with high school girls walking the streets at night; with white supremacist children wearing swastikas to class; with kids still stuck in the system but allowed out of "juvie" for my class and maybe one other." So goes the blog post of a former teacher at West High, all brought about by a viewing of "Singles"! 12 comments from 10 users

My friend's son now works at West and he has stated that it is not that bad, I will be sending my son to West, and I will see how it goes from there posted by

Well, at least that goes somewhat towards explaining why the person is a former teacher. If you have such distaste for your pupils, you aren't going to last long before burning out. At the very least, he shouldn't have been teaching remedial students if he had that much distaste for them. posted by

His solution to the problem? Give up and move to a rich enclave of San Diego where he privately tutors so he'll never have to see poor kids ever again. Another person who believes he is too good for the rest of us. Good riddance. posted by

Obama will change it all with the God of Global Warming by his side good Karma , and feel goodism will fluff over the worst school system in western civilization ! Do they still have the Day care center at EB High? Liberals have destroyed and dumbed down the school system to the point that all of the skilled people we need are imported from India, or Asia, the thugs and criminals are allowed to create an environment of intimidation that destroys the learning process..yes one bad apple can destroy the whole bunch , Clinton was the bad apple in 1992 when the school system turned into this sad malaise. The teachers coming out of our Karma colleges are sexually assaulting students in numbers so astounding it is common place . The respect a teacher should get is destroyed by liberal poliies and abberant personal behavior. The good teachers are sued by the ACLU , With Obama it will just get worse. The decline of America is 15 years away to total meltdown. posted by

Interesting about West High. When my grandson first started teaching he subbed all over town and after a time or two at West swore he'd never accept an assignment there again. He thought it was that bad. After he'd been permanantly teaching a while we were talking about the different schools again and he said that if he ever decided to change high schools (he's a high school math teacher) that he would go to West. That surprised me considering his earlier comment but he seemed to feel the challange was in a school where there are problems and not in one of the "elite" high schools. When my stepgranddaughter decided to move her boys to Bakersfield for the advantages in football she moved into West High district because that's where the houses were that she could afford to buy. Both boys graduated with no social problems and are great young men now. One was the valley football star and went on to play at Fresno State. It's not always just the school. Parents have to be involved and families have to support the students. West actually had a great booster club where parent were very involved. posted by

My two kids went to West High from 1992 to 2000. Yes there were some bad characters at the school, as there are at most every high school. But my kids participated in band, chamber chorale, debate, tennis and soccer and they came out great with a wonderful high school experience. It is what you put into it. posted by

Steve, My guess is it also had something to do with their Dad. That has so much to do with kids attitude toward school. My kids went to Tehachapi High and in our family, school was NOT an option. posted by

this an overall insight to a MAJORITY of schools in the Bakersfield Area. Most of the BCSD, along with smaller outlying districts like lamont, arvin, edison, standard, beardsley, etc are this way due to low Socio economic status. parents in these districts (not all, but most) are on the take from the gubment, and expect the schools to completely educate their children BEFORE the kids come home from school. sadly, public schools in the ghettos and barrios in the United States are at a breaking point due to the decline of overall societal norms and expectations, along with the latest belief that "no one can fail"
