"No place more lonely and desolate than Bakersfield"

Henry Louis Gomez posts on the Babalu blog early this morning that "I have known no place more lonely and desolate than Bakersfield, CA on a Sunday night."

That bit of wisdom is accompanied by a photo showing a mostly darkened Doughty Funeral Home in Bakersfield. The only lights flood the garage portion, where the hearse typically parks.

We're not sure what it all means -- the comments don't shed any light (other than to plug Buck and Merle's ties to Bako -- but it seems kinda deep.

The lights are on but nobody's home

It's an allegorical thing ... and, we're supposed to figure it out.

I have known no place more lonely and desolate than Bakersfield, CA on a Sunday night.

Sounds like a good grab for a mystery novel. Of course, I'm presumming Mr. Gomez has yet to spend a sunday night in Buttonwillow or Alpaugh.

it's obvious Henry hasn't been around much if Bako is the most lonely and desolate place. I wonder if he has ever been on the I-5 at 2am or on watch on a naval ship out at sea. The Desert between Barstow & Stateline at night is far more desolate, he needs to get out more.
