Is Bakersfield an extra-tough audience?
Bakersfield can be a tough audience. We booed Johnny Carson, a decision that spawned Bakersfield to become the butt of late-nite humor for decades. Now comes a tidbit from a blog chronicling the career of The Three Stooges. The Stooges, struggling to make a comeback late in their careers, apparently fell flat in a performance at a Bakersfield Holiday Inn. Reads the blog: "The first presentation of the new act couldn’t have been more disappointing. The stooges performed at a Holiday Inn in Bakersfield, California. Nobody laughed; even worse, some of the patrons, a little tipsy, started to heckle the trio. “Silence, you’re going to wake up my friend!”, yelled one, to what Moe replied: “You have thirty two teeth right now, wanna see how it is like having none?"… But is Bakersfield really any tougher an audience than any other city? I grew up in Fresno, and heard stories about Led Zeppelin being booed offstage at a local show in the late 1960s. And I personally saw a concert by the then-relatively unknown Police, whose leader Sting -- offended that Fresnans were sitting instead of standing before his greatness -- vowed never to play Fresno again (they did, in a stadium show a few years later that earned them big bucks). What do you think? Are we power haters or just being singled out for honest "feedback" back in the day? 8 comments from 6 users

In 1978, Black Sabbath played the Civic Auditorium and was booed mercilessly. Everybody wanted the warm-up band back on...a little group no one had ever heard of then called Van Halen. posted by

I thought I was the only one that's heard of Hayseed Dixie.
I would rather see Sabbath over van halen any day of the week. I'd rather see Hayseed Dixie than van halen if you really want to know. posted by

Hey, thanks for picking up my story!!! Very nice of you. Just for the record, that part of my story about the Stooges is extracted from Moe Howard's autobiography, so I guess it must be true... Now do I think Bakersfield being a tough audience... I don't think so. Well, at least not in this case. The guys were clearly misbooked... Best regards from an Argentine in Waterloo, Ontario (Canada). I hope you liked the Stooges series (2 episodes to go)... --Gabriel posted by

I was at the Fresno Ratcliffe Stadium show with The Police, The Fixx, Oingo Boingo, and Thompson Twins. Boingo got booed a little bit, but the place was sold out and it was a pretty long day. Sometimes you gotta get to the headliner. Hip-hop acts have that problem today, especially in Bakersfield - TOO MANY OPENING ACTS...zzzzzzzz.....
