Stunning "castle" debuts on Central Coast
Location: 7292 Exotic Garden Drive, Cambria, CA

Larger Map

This may be a stretch, but I think the so-called Bakosphere can stretch to the Central Coast on these very hot summer days.

Castello della Costa d’Oro on the coast just north of Cambria has been “unveiled” after 14 years of construction. My first thought was, um, Hearst Castle is THE castle on the Central Coast. And it probably will remain so, but the slideshow and interactive tour capturing the beauty of Castello della Costa d’Oro (aka Golden Coast Castle) have to be seen to be believed. I don't think this kind of opulence has appeared in the area since the Hearsts left San Simeon.

This place is stunning and magnificent in so many areas, from the architecture and landscaping to the fine art and classic automobiles inside and out.

The 35,000-square-foot “castle” is a wine estate built by real estate developer Khosro Khaloghli on 80 acres. No word on the cost, but from the looks of it, budget didn't seem to be an issue.

Some highlights beyond the enormous rooms, patios, entryways, etc.:
•    12 painted mural domes
•    16 wall murals
•    33 interior and exterior marble statues
•    More than 50 fifty marble and onyx columns
•    2-story wardrobe closet
•    Secret passageway that leads to a wine cellar
•    Helipad
•    Automotive pavilion designed for up to 30 classic cars and motorcycles

The link doesn't seem to be working.

From the pictures here it is opulent, yes. But it is no Hearst Castle.

Sorry about that. Not sure why the site is now offline. We'll update once it comes back online.

You broke their website Bakosphere! Heh, just kidding. Actually all I am getting is a prompt to upgrade my Flash version, but that's probably because I have the NoScript and FlashBlock add-ons to Firefox. And my cynical side must remark "there's where all the real estate boom money went". It just had to be said.

It is working now. Oh my is all I can say.

The seperation between the haves and the have nots is really obscene at times. It is very beautiful but I think I'll keep my trailer besides I'm just getting used to this swamp cooler thing... LOL

I realize people have the right to spend their money as they choose, but as Steve just said, this is obscene.  Rather than indulging themselves, why don't such wealthy people support charities and research projects that will make life better for others?  Why not underwrite the cost of a symphony orchestra or a local theater group?  You certainly can't take all this opulence with you when you die, but you could leave a lasting legacy that would benefit many  generations coming after you.

Opulently tacky--just like Heart Castle.  Only worse.  It's always funny to see how people with no taste will try to copy what they think is classy.  LOL!

I loved the office suite and of course the kitchen is to die for. The classic cars inside that airplane hangar  entertainment room are gorgeous. The master bath is unreal, and I would love to take a shower in it. However, much of the decor is way over the top for me. I really dislike the master bedroom. Sleeping there would feel like trying to sleep in the Vatican. The cream-colored guest bedroom was more to my liking. And what's with all the nude women statues and paintings everywhere? What a drag...I only saw one nude guy. Disappointing.

why don't such wealthy people support charities and research projects that will make life better for others?  The reason filthy rich people are filthy rich is because they don't give their money away.

And maybe as children they were never taught to share!

I'm glad we have examples like Bill Gates, J. Paul Getty, the Rockefellers, and many other well-known philanthropists who do share through foundations, scholarships, and other direct means.  Guess it's more my nature to be a giver rather than a taker/keeper.

I have always wished I had lots of money so I could anonymously pay for surgery for kids who can't afford it, set up a scholarship for Boy Scouts and kids who have lost parents...stuff like that. I would also go the Jolie-Pitt route and adopt more kids. I think I would adopt on this side of the pond, however. I would also love to build a large no-kill animal shelter. So there you have it...ghostriter's lottery list.

Oh yeah...and I'd take my hubby on a honeymoon to Scotland. We never got a honeymoon.

I would NOT, however, build a castle.

How do you know they don't? Many wealthy people donate mega bucks but do it anonymously and prefer to keep it that way. Do you think Gates, Getty & Rockefeller live in hovels? not likely.

Look at it this way.............................it is "these kind of people" i.e. multi million/billionaires who will be paying for our health care. So, let them have their "toys".

WoW! that brings gawdy to a new level.

Some people don't get it. You don't own things, things own you. My little house and old car are quite enough to answer to.

I can see wanting to live comfortably in a beautiful location. Shoot I could even be happy with a beach bungallo and a condo in Manhattan. Even that would be allot to keep track of but 14 years and hundreds of millions of dollars?

How small is that guy's whatchcallit?

I don't understand the point.

Wow-that is an amazing estate. I can't imagine being able to create such a magnificent place, the money in furnishings alone must be outstanding. I don't find it obscene. I wish my parents had of left me a castle! haha! Imagine that! maybe they'd like to adopt me?

I think it's amusing how many people think it is so horrible. I assume you all find the same disgust at every actor/television personality/writer/singer/politician and artist that lives so extravagantly.  Micheal Jacksons neverland ranch must have disgusted you deeply. The fact of the matter is many people live in the lap of luxury with very extravagant tastes. To each their own.

I did not grow up iwith that luxury of wealth but I am very close to some people who have. People who find it foreign to not have a driver, who have never flown on commercial airlines, people who have the best of everything and never go without. If you have been able to work  your ass off and provide for yourself and your family and accumulate that enormous amount of wealth good for you. Whatever your dream may be, follow it, even if it is to build a castle. Silly it may seem to many, but we all have dreams don't we? Follow your heart wherever it takes you.

Two cents, I was thinking the same thing.  And the same as Witters.  Talk about judgmental..lol.  They may give millions to charity.  And if any of you had trillions of dollars you wouldn't be living in the southwest part of Bakersfield either.  Or on any side.  Admit it.

Beside, how many of you objected to the obscene amounts spent on political campaigns and inauguration parties?

If I had the kind of money they have I'd have a big ole house too..in a compound like in the godfather with a big ole house for each of my kids and grandkids.  I'd get me a little motorhome and tow a little sports car behind it and just travel for months and months.  No matter how wealthy I was, that would still be my dream.

If I had that kind of cash~ I'd buy one piece of decent art...but to each his or her taste.

I would never begrudge a tacky rich person (or a tacky poor person) their right to decorate their houses any way they want.  Anyone and everyone can prove every American cliche true all they want, and I'm not going to stand in their way.  In fact, I applaud Americans for their true American spirit of thumbing their noses at taste and restraint and just throwing every fancy thing they can think of at their houses and seeing what sticks.

Still, these people remind me of Navin Johnson.  I'll bet they also have red-and-white wine dispensers out by their tennis courts.
