Fuller proposes expansion of highway memorial signs

Bakersfield Assemblywoman Jean Fuller is at the center of legislation that would revise Caltrans policy allowing families of people killed in highway accidents to pay $1,000 for official memorial signs at the crash sites.

Fuller amended the original language -- which focused on victims of DUI accidents -- to allow memorial signs for those killed in accidents due to other causes. According to this Los Angeles Times story, Fuller's impetus is several recent accidents in the Taft area.

Proponents say the formal signs reduce the handmade memorials that often surface along roadsides, creating dangerous situations for people visiting the sites and adding to the memorials, as well as Caltrans workers who have to remove them. Critics say the official memorials add to "sign pollution" along California roadways.

The Assembly has approved Fuller's idea, but the Senate has yet to take action.

What do you think?

Maybe memorial signs will make people slow down.   Or take a taxi home from the party.

I wish there were fewer memorial signs. It takes more than a sign to make something a memorial item. How about the Mark Salvaggio Interchange or the Rosa Parks Memorial Freeway. What does Highway 58 have to do with Rosa Parks? Apart from the sign, how does the highway represent Rosa Parks? How about the interchage at Airport Drive & 99. How does that memorialize the CHP officer killed in a shootout a few years ago?

The answer is that they are nothing more than signs. If we need to bring attention to someone I am sure we can find better ways to do it in our modern society. As far as the roadside memorials, I don't really see the point. Again, if we need to bring attention to a dangerous stretch of road I am sure we can find a better way.

A memorial is whatever it represents to the surviving family members.  If a memorial to their loved one is what they want, more power to them.

Your opinion is just your opinon.

Hopefully people won't wreck looking at all the Memorials to people that......errr...wrecked.

Anti

Do you wreck every time you're looking for an off ramp sign, a street sign, a speed sign?

I think Fuller should focus on the state budget and mind her own business and stay out of it.  It's just another way for the state to shoulder itself into private affairs.

Can anyone have a memorial sign if they fork over $1,000? Could I pay $1,000 and have the Michael Jackson Memorial Highway. (I wouldn't but I'm just saying).

Please Jean, less memorial signs and more information signs. If you drive around the Midwest, you'll see what restaurants, gas stations, etc... are at each exit. Why not ask some of those gas stations/restaurants to pay a small fee for the highway signage? You're doing travelers a service.

Nice sentiment and 40 years ago I'd be all for it. These days, too much traffic going too fast for our roads. I don't see the practicality of it.

Nah Audrey, but the more signs that are up, the less you pay attention to the important ones, like where the next bathroom is!!!

I have no problem with the little memorials on the side of the road, I just think there should be a limit on 'officially' placed ones.

But......what the heck...if Mark Salvaggio can get an interchange named after him, then why would we be surprised if it is proposed that the Garces Circle be changed to the Chad Vegas Circus......errrrr ....Circle.

Hope she does some research on her own with this bill since it's obvious she didn't on SB670 which she voted for with no substantiated evidence. I for one won't vote for her again.
